Salisbury Awarded Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community Status by the League of American Bicyclists

Salisbury – Mayor James Ireton, Jr. is pleased to announce that the League of American Bicyclists has recognized Salisbury with a bronze Bicycle Friendly Community (BFCSM) award.  Salisbury joins 350 other visionary communities across the country in receiving this distinction.

With the announcement of 42 new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Communities, Salisbury joins a leading group of communities, in all 50 states, that are transforming our neighborhoods.

“We applaud this new round of communities for investing in a more sustainable future for the country and a healthier future for their residents and beyond,” said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. “The growing number of leaders taking up bicycling as a way of solving many complex community problems is encouraging. We look forward to continuing to work with these communities as we move closer to our mission of creating a bicycle-friendly America for everyone.”

The BFC program is revolutionizing the way communities evaluate their quality of life, sustainability and transportation networks, while allowing them to benchmark their progress toward improving their bicycle-friendliness. With this round, there are now 350 BFCs in all 50 states. The bronze BFC award recognizes Salisbury’s commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies.
“We are honored to have been awarded bronze BFC status, and we are proud of the work our community—particularly Matt Drew and BikeSBY—has put in to get us to this point,” said Mayor Ireton.  “This is a perfect example of a well-organized group of citizens making their voices heard in City Hall.”

“I am so proud to see that the efforts of City leadership, staff, and BikeSBY have resulted in this coveted award,” said City Council President, Jake Day.  “Our investments in a more bike-able Salisbury will help us in our pursuit of a more prosperous Salisbury.”

The BFC program provides a roadmap to building a Bicycle Friendly Community and the application itself has become a rigorous and an educational tool in itself. Since its inception, more than 800 distinct communities have applied and the five levels of the award – diamond, platinum, gold, silver and bronze – provide a clear incentive for communities to continuously improve.

A recognition ceremony will be held Thursday, June 11th at 5:30 p.m. on the steps of the Government Office Building, followed by a celebratory community bike ride through the city park.  Cyclists, citizens, and members of the media are encouraged to attend.

Visionary? SALISBURY?! Where they put a bike path in the center of a road and then on the right side of same road after crossing a street, meaning they would have to cut across the travel path of traffic or get in a head on with opposing traffic?

Salis deserves a medal alright, for being stupid.

How many jobs come with that jimmy?..solid jobs? Hows this short term infusion of cash working for you? Can you maybe get a bike factory here? Maybe a Friggin bike pump factory? Retail , Hotel and eatery spikes don't cut it! Guess that's what Smallsbury gets for electing inexperienced tax suckers like you. Bet you could'nt run a lemonade stand. Even if your mommy gave you the friggin lemons and sugar!

How much did that title cost?

How stupid to waste money on bike lanes. The money wasted on painting road signs for bikers. Vehicles are suppose to drive on the roadway lanes, so what does the intelligent Bury administration do? They paint bike signs on the same road lanes that vehicles must use. Accidents waiting to happen.

Coming home today, I saw a person on a bicycle on Rte. 50 cutting off a vehicle who was supposed to be there. The stupid guy almost caused an accident.

If you want to ride a bike great do so in the country not on busy streets or major highways and tie up traffic while you are out having your fun at everyone's expense.

The city doesn't have money to fix the roads, or maintain infrastructure, but Bury has money to waste.

I think the spandex biker squads should be confined to closed race courses only! They are a hazard and also VERY belligerent.

They obviously did not ride down the south end of 13. The road and sidewalk have been totally wrecked for more than a year now.

2 girls on Camden Ave. were riding on the sidewalk, against traffic. Do 2 wrongs make a right?? LOL

Yeah, I'm sure that we have no other issues within our city than to worry about how we can be awarded this award. Hey mayor, here is an idea... why don't you get your head out of the sand and start looking at the real issues within our city instead of being worried about being a 'Bicycle Friendly Community'. Oh... wait that might require you to actually do some work... sorry... I forgot.. you just like to hold LGBT parties....

Another useless award! to include I showed up for work award, and I paid my bills award. Isn't that special.

Talk about BS. This is all BS when you put Bike Lanes on 13 along with the stupid Bus stops hindering traffic. The Bike lanes should not be on heavy traffic highways. They are not allowed on the By Pass.
And when they have Sea Gull Century don't even come with in 20 miles of Salisbury cause they take over and don't abide by Maryland law dealing with the proper way to ride bicycles on the roadway. SU probably got this award presented to Salisbury because of their money maker which endangers the public.
