Nine killed in shooting at South Carolina church, gunman still at large

DEVELOPING: Multiple people were shot, some fatally Wednesday at a historic black church in the heart of South Carolina's second-largest city and police said the gunman was still at large.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley told the Post and Courier newspaper that there were fatalities in the shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church downtown.

"We’re still gathering information so it’s not the time yet for details," Riley told the paper. "I will say that this is an unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy in this most historic church, an evil and hateful person took the lives of citizens who had come to worship and pray together."

horrific and all too common

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and friends and the community of Charleston. Only a depraved loser coward would do something like this. The church attendees were helpless. I hope he is caught soon and dealt with harshly.

There can be no doubt that this is an absolutely horrible thing. I di think, however, that they rushed to judgement by calling it a hate crime. I didn't see any indication that this was based on race or religion. Just because the seemed to be white doesn't mean it was racially motivated and just because it happened at a church doesn't necessarily mean it was motivated by religious differences. I think it would have served the community better if the officer had reserved that statement until the investigation is completed and the motivation could be determined based upon fact rather than just a feeling. All that being said, my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

I see another case coming like the Aurora theater shooter, where we see that Holmes nut on TV nightly. This guy will also play the insanity card when he stands trial. His attorney will cite all of the violence in the world today & how his client was influenced by it.And don't forget how he'll claim he was an abused child & constantly exposed to racial rants from his father (even though he had terrific parents). The defense template is so predictable any more.

Just doesn't make sense at all....prayers to all of those families and that community!

I hope they find this demon quickly and if he's killed while resisting arrest I am perfectly fine with that. I don't make excuses or am an apologist for anyone's bad behavior. Everyone should feel this way and that particular race wouldn't have so very many criminals in it killing each other off including innocent children in record numbers.

9:03 What?

9:06 if this youth is so disenfranchised and troubled by all the problems and chaos blacks are causing, why commit a massive shooting in a church( after sitting for an hour during bible study)?? why not commit a mass shooting in the projects or hood or ghetto or some corner?? he's not disenfranchised and troubled. just a coward THUG!!

He couldn't help himself. He's angry and frustrated and took it out on the first available easy target. Same as the looters looted and destroyed the soft targets instead of like the police dept or the city hall in Baltimore. This is how these disenfranchised youths work.
He probably didn't have enough mentors or grew up in a neighborhood without recreation centers and had nothing to do so he took to violence.
He was oppressed.

Word of caution: So far, we only have the word of the surviving witness as to the claim of what Roof allegedly said at the time of the shooting. And, if there was ever a group that would be sure to lie in order to turn this into a racial hate crime, it would be the members of the AME church.
If Roof wanted to “tell the world what happened”, why wouldn’t he have simply done so himself, either by leaving a hand-written “manifesto” or by making posts to FB, Instagram, or Twitter?

shooting a up a church is the same as looting. wow!! seems he's not the only one disenfranchised. I wonder how he's going to explain how black people made him commit mass murder in the house of the lord on judgment day.. 10:26 how ironic to state Amen for defense of shooting up a church.. Shorebillies at its best!!

“Confederate States of America” license plate on his car

“I have to do it,” the terrorist said, according to a survivor. “You rape our women and you’re taking over our country — and you have to go.”

Still don't think it was a hate crime?

When the F*** did the Confederate States of America have anything to do with a hate crime?? The CSA is nothing but History and the Sons of the CSA is the love of heritage. This goof ball is a misguided lunatic and the CSA had nothing to do with hatred.

YOU my friend are more misguided than the lunatic because you have been spoon fed your own hatred of Southern heritage and history. Just keep your mouth shut if you think the Confederacy is hatred and the black thugs attacking innocent elderly white women in Knock Out games isn't!!
