Black NC GOP Chairman: Why I Became a Republican

When Hasan Harnett first moved to North Carolina, he registered to vote as a Democrat because that's what he thought he was supposed to do. That is, until a friend introduced him to conservative ideas about government.

Harnett, who is the first African American chairman of the North Carolina GOP, told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV Wednesday, that he started to change his views through a friend, who "inspired me to become the Republican I am today."

"He talked about the power of limited government as well as having strong family. After those kinds of conversations, I realized that I was part of the wrong party," he explained.

He believes that more African Americans can become Republicans through "education and having open conversations" about the issues.

"One of the things I've done successfully is take both platforms — the Democratic platform as well as the Republican platform — and white-out [the party names] and ask that individual to read these two platforms and make a decision as to which one best represents them," he explained.
