UC Berkeley students want building renamed after notorious cop killer

A student group has demanded that a university building is renamed after a convicted murderer.

The Black Student Union at UC Berkeley wants to honour Assata Shakur, the first woman on the FBI's list of most wanted terrorists, with the name change.

Shakur was found guilty of shooting New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster in 1977.

The 67-year-old former Black Panther activist escaped from prison two years later and is thought to be hiding in Cuba.

The union believes she represents an 'icon of resistance within oppressed communities', Fox News reported.

Cori McGowens, a junior at the university, said: 'We want the renaming of it to [go to] someone, Assata Shakur, who we feel represents us as black students.'

The students have also asked the university to hire two black admissions officers, two black psychologists and two black advisers.

They are hoping an African-American resource center will be created.

Their request for a building, thought to be Barrows Hall, to be renamed has split reactions on social media.

One user @Ilianerrz wrote on Twitter: 'WHY DO STUDENTS AT UC BERKLEY (sic) WANT TO NAME A BUILDING AFTER ASSATA SHAKUR?!??'

Oh yes , we have come to the point , we will worship the criminal and kill the innocent.
But , having said that , I do believe that this is the standard of this culture.
WE have worshiped Obama as a savior , this will be a way of life , do you hear me Ferguson?

Hey I have an idea. Lets name a highway after James Earl Ray......She is a cop killer who has been on the run from justice and hiding in Cuba for years. Lets fake a dedication of the building to her, invite and then arrest. Now that's justice...

I swear people are damn nuts. I do like the idea of the fake dedication, inviting her then arresting her though. That is justice.

Sounds like they need a couple psychologists, alright.

Interesting that the story has to come from a UK newspaper. Where's the Chicken5#1+ U.S. media?

THIS woman is the best role model they can find? Their HERO? The EXAMPLE? Someone they want to honor?
What a great illustration of how screwed up their thinking is and why their culture is in shambles.
Or how shallow the pool of possible contenders.....
Doesn't it say everything that these students don't find anything wrong with their nominee AND further, their belief that the opposition is nothing but racist and misogynist white people trying to hold them down (while, at the same time, adding 200 points to their SAT scores so they can go to a college that would normally rip their application up and burn it --- that's "holding them down", you racists!).
More time with the books and less time chanting and dancing and you wouldn't need a 200 point cushion.
The only people "holding you down" is yourselves.
