It's Time for Conservatives to Stop Defending Police

There is nothing conservative about government violating the rights of citizens.

Imagine if I were to tell you there is a large group of government employees, with generous salaries and ridiculously cushy retirement pensions covered by the taxpayer, who enjoy incredible job security and are rarely held accountable even for activities that would almost certainly earn the rest of us prison time. When there is proven misconduct, these government employees are merely reassigned and are rarely dismissed. The bill for any legal settlements concerning their errors? It, too, is covered by the taxpayers. Their unions are among the strongest in the country.

No, I’m not talking about public-school teachers.

I’m talking about the police.

We conservatives recoil at the former; yet routinely defend the latter — even though, unlike teachers, police officers enjoy an utter monopoly on force and can ruin — or end — one’s life in a millisecond.

That problem can be fixed by holding police accountable, civilly and criminally, for egregious behavior, such as macing people who are in handcuffs and kneeling, beating an unarmed kid into the hospital for SAYING SOMETHING(!!) they didn't like, for turning the camera off in the interrogation room and turning in back on, only to find the previously healthy citizen a bloody mess, or shooting people in the back, or blasting away at a 12 year old kid caryying a BB gun, or raping women, or wading into a (legal) protest, swinging a baton at the heads of everyone in the vicinity, or shooting a citizen in the head with a tear gas canister, or selling and/or transporting drugs --- the list is well documented; how much time do you have?
The police are a neccesary entity in a civilized society, but when State's Attorneys and judges give them carte blanche to do whatever they want, guess what they will do? Right. Whatever they want. With enthusiasm!
Every day --- EVERY DAY! --- "We, the people" go to PRISON for what the police do on a regular basis.
This Wild West, unchallenged, "WE ARE THE POLICE!!" violence is no longer the exception. Its standard procedure across the nation and with the ongoing militarization of the police and the great influx of military veterans (who treat all citizens as the "enemy" and a "threat"), it can only get worse, as history has shown again and again.
A crime is a crime, and wearing a badge should not be an all-inclusive pass on anything you feel like doing.
With great authority comes great responsibilty. Cops love that authority (especially the 5'6" ones), but the responsibility part? Totally unconcerned.
Keep cheering like the citizens in Germany, who loved it when the SS and Gestapo were killing Jews and Gypsies, robbing citizens, raping women, beating anyone who didn't like it or protested (if they killed some of them, so what?). Innocence? The laws? Right or wrong? The cheering crowds gave no thought to any of that. BUT, they were VERY surprised when it was their turn under the gun from the very people they previously cheered.
Coming soon to a neighborhood near you (maybe YOUR neighborhood?). Don't be surprised this time.
Something tells me you will be, anyway.
Keep cheering.
