Featured Artist Joni Simpson is a local photographer by trade; a professional in the business of capturing moments and the essence of her subjects. But oftentimes, despite being on the other side of the lens, the essence Joni captures is really her own gracious and ethereal spirit. 3rd Friday is pleased to welcome you to what her friends have lovingly come to describe as The Joni Simpson Experience. Joni will be displaying examples of her work, both photography and portraiture, that she considers part of her own personal artistry. Feminine perspectives and often playful attitudes shine through Joni's works in beautiful ways, and offer themselves as evidence to her commitment to capturing the artistic beauty of women.
Salisbury Artist Kimberly Purnell enjoys working with bright colors and is inspired by exotic plants and animals. Recently Kim has been working mainly in oil pastel, but using it very much like a drawing medium, having found a lipstick-like brand that goes down allowing broad strokes and a lot of movement.
Artist Camilla B.K. Lewis grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in a small town surrounded by those who made their living off of the water, and the often challenging circumstances that go along with that life. Throughout her youth, Lewis always found a way to create and express herself with an art all her own. She continues to actively explore artistic experimentation and will be displaying both fine art canvases as well as hand blown glass art.
The Parker Place Building, (and weather permitting, the Parker Place Garden Area), will be another main area for local artists, vendors and crafters. Wicomico Public Library will be there selling tickets for the Light of Literacy Awards Ceremony which will happen on April 3rd, 8 am - 10 am. This ceremony recognizes the dedication of everyday individuals doing extraordinary work in promoting the power of literacy throughout the community.
In the Gallery Building, the Art Institute and Gallery will open the Photography and Graphic Design Exhibition featuring both traditional and digital photography. In addition, The VPA | Visual & Performing Arts Programwill be holding a showcase. The VPA program, administered by Michael Morris, will be displaying works generated by students from WiHi, Bennett, Parkside, and Mardela High Schools.
Salisbury University Art Galleries | Downtown Campuswill be presenting two distinct shows this 3rd Friday. First, an exhibit titled Untold Stories by Korean-American artist Eun Kyung Suh.
Her textile sculptures and installations explore the diasporic experiences of Korean adoptees and immigrants, and address feelings of alienation within an adoptive society. She has exhibited throughout the United States and in Russia. Within the Eun-Kyung Suh Exibition exhibit, SWAC, The City of Salisbury, and the Wicomico Library have partnered with SU Downtown Gallery to present: Film Art and Untold Stories." Stop in and be enriched by the Untold Stories in the Gallery, and enjoy a free family movie celebrating character, endurance and victory.
In the adjacent gallery space, the Estonian Embassy to the United States presents works by artist Pusa, a painter, writer and children's book illustrator who received the Culture Award of Pärnu in Estonia. Her visit is sponsored by the Estonian Embassy; World Artists Experiences, Inc.; and SU Cultural Affairs Office. Pusa focuses on "little things in between big things, for example, a small crack in a skyscraper's foundation, the inside of a lemon peel or a bubble in boiling porridge."I like to imagine life inside tiny things," she said. "I believe that there is brisk and colorful life inside the tiny things in life." Admission to both exhibits is free and the public is invited.
Kuhn's Jewelers is celebrating its 161st anniversary sale! They will be open and inviting everyone to celebrate with them, with huge sales on almost everything in the store. 3rd Friday would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Kuhn's Jewelers on their success, and to congratulate Downtown Salisbury Business Owner, Susan Purnell as she is named one of Maryland's Top 100 Women for 2014. The award, bestowed by The Daily Record, recognizes the outstanding achievements of professional women who reside or work in Maryland. Susan Purnell is the third-generation owner of Kuhn's Jewelers, the sixth-oldest independent jewelry store in the United States. She is an active supporter of the community; serving as board member on the Salisbury University Foundation, as volunteer host of SU on the Air, a monthly PAC 14 program, and she co-founded the Jack Purnell-Chris Thomas Memorial Tennis Tournament. Susan has also been a long-time supporter of Downtown Salisbury, and downtown events like 3rd Friday.
Brew River is celebrating spring, choosing to throw this year's Dock Bar Grand Re-Opening during 3rd Friday! They have the evening packed from Happy Hour on, with live music this from Willow Brook Acoustic starting at 6pm, followed by Mike Hines and the Look at 10 p.m. Brew River's dock bar is cover-free and family friendly until 10 p.m.
Mojo's is having a Rubber Ducky Party! Fundraising is beginning for the "Duck Race" to be held at Salisbury Festival. There will be t-shirts for sale, and there alot of fun ways that groups and workplaces can get involved, even sponsor a duck. The event supports Wicomico H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everyday), a local non-profit developed to promote the welfare of children, youth, adults and families in their homes, schools, and communities. Wicomico H.O.P.E. strives to improve the quality of life for local citizens by providing financial assistance during periods of personal crisis. From prescription and utility assistance for the elderly to Christmas presents for foster children placed in group homes, H.O.P.E. helps meet the needs of those in our community that have limited resources.
The other Downtown Bars and Restaurants are also ready for 3rd Friday, with great specials for the dinner crowd, and plenty of entertainment planned for night. Roadie Joe's has Nikki Watson and Ben Hollister for Happy Hour and Cellar Door has the MRE's starting at 8:30pm. Market Street Inn will of course have amazing dinner and happy hour specials, plus DJ B-Side starting at 9:30pm!
