Three Days After Christmas, 1.3 Million Americans Will Lose Their Unemployment Benefits

And, another two million will stop receiving assistance if Congress doesn't extend long-term benefits by June. Our nation is barely pulling out of the worst recession since the Great Depression, and we're abandoning those who are out of work because of this economy. The unemployment rate is officially sever percent, but there are still at least three unemployed workers applying for every open job. People on long-term unemployment aren't sitting around collecting checks – they're fighting like hell to be given a chance to get back to work, but the competition they face is intense. Rather than our government stepping up to be the employer of last resort, Republicans in Congress make the absurd argument that cutting off this economic lifeline will somehow help out-of-work Americans suddenly find that nonexistent job. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has announced that the Senate will vote in early January on a temporary extension of unemployment benefits, and that it's “just the first step” toward addressing income inequality in our nation. But, that date means that – even in the best case scenario – more than a million Americans will see a delay in unemployment benefits, which could be much longer if Republicans hold up or block the upcoming vote. It is utterly un-American to abandon those who need our help. Our nation learned from history, and recognized the importance of keeping people from falling through the cracks, yet here we are, repeating those mistakes once again. We shouldn't be cutting unemployment benefits, we should be investing and creating jobs, which are the only real ways to help Americans get back to work.

The system is the problem. If a person can earn more on unemployment than at a $10 an hour job why would they even be looking for work?

It's been years but the last I knew the maximum for unemployment was 400 dollars a week.

That's quite a narrow view 1:18, and thoughts like that are part of the problem.

People who make $10/hr do not qualify for that much of unemployment. That's why they are looking for work.

If you made $25,000 a year you only get $262 a week in unemployment. If you get it for a year that is only $13,624 a year. That is below poverty.

If you made $42,000 and up a year you get $430 a week in unemployment. That is only $22,360 a year.

Educate yourself before you make ignorant statements.

No one is getting rich on employment.

Aaaahh, more from Thom Hartmann...
Nary a word about Harry Reid & Co. doing NOTHING to help the economy in the last 5 years except print money to help Wall St and throwing us deeper into debt. It's the evil Republicans who are the problem.

depends on the state. PA was $580/week a couple years ago.

So after to years of existing on a life support system that keeps people from falling through the cracks they still can't find a job. That says their expectations are too high . People get hired in jobs they are willing to take every day of the year. Yes, the economy is bad. That's mostly thanks to the trillions of dollars the Democrats suck out of it, a lot of which is under the guise of "creating jobs". Jobs in areas like Solendra, "green" cars and other technologies people aren't willing to invest in because, as the government has continually proven, the technology is an economic failure.

Get the government's hands out of producers pockets and stop offering a continuing free ride with money taken from producers, even more jobs will become available. Then, when job seekers expectations become aligned with the increased selection of employment opportunities, and there is now longer a government handout available, they'll have to get back to work.

1:29 That may be so, however, with Obamacare, most people are now part time meaning less than 30 hours per week. Question? Do unemployment checks take out SS, Medicare, and taxes? You see my point?

2:09 So you get to live in even deeper poverty on unemployment in Maryland.

You have to pay Federal Income tax and State Income tax in unemployment.
So after living below poverty, you get to pay taxes on it.

Criticize much?
How dare the unemployed have an expectation of making a livable wage! Schucks, they should work for minimum wage even if it sends them into homelessness!!!

What employers pay in unemployment taxes per person is pennies.
Unless you are walking in their shoes, you have no clue.

Maybe you should scroll Joes Blog and read up on the state of employment here in the County, then maybe you will have a clue.

All this gloom and doom. Put on your flannel PJs, heat up some hot chocolate and give thanks that if you like your doctor and health plan you can keep them!

Happy Holiday of some generic sort from OweBama!

Annie Nonymous is really out of touch with reality. I'm sure she thinks it's just fine to legalize millions of illegals so that they can get all of the jobs that American refuse to do. If Americans really need work and can't find a job, why are we even talking about letting millions of illegal aliens stay in this country. If they can't find work they would also be entitled to all the benefits that we can't afford to pay our own citizens. I'm sick of the liberals wanting to give the country away.

Actually, I stated facts that were found on the State of MD Dept of Labor and Employment site.

You are just rambling and making assumptions.

Enjoy that coal in your stocking.
