One tree, four years of work and an indescribable amount of talent: that’s what it took to create this incredible masterpiece. Except for the large scale 8:53 Japan and China have done these kinds of carvings in every substance from their beginnings. If you want to see something truely impressive, research the infinately tiny japanese carvings, some of which can be found on japanese ojme's or netsuke's. Some of their very finest will require a high powered loupe, just to see the infinate details that have been carved. I have only, a single really great one, that has about 50+ oriental people csarved on it, both men and women heads/3/4 length bodies), all are easily visible, under strong magnification. That's on a single ojime, measureing about 1/2" wide and 3/4" tall. How they achieved such great detail is mind boggling, at least to me. Most sell for under $100 a piece, the best do $10k - $100k and sometimes more. The chinese market for everything antique and modern is through the roof right now.
