Trans Fats: FDA Moves To Ban

The Food and Drug Administration decided Thursday that trans fats are not safe in foods, which could lead to a ban of the partially hydrogenated fats and oils from baked and fried foods.

The decision is now open to a 60-day public comment period, CNN reports. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 5,000 Americans a year die of heart disease linked to artificial trans fats.

Since 2006, the FDA required companies to list artificial trans fats on labels, which led many manufacturers to start removing them from their food products. Local governments, including New York City, have already banned trans fat use in its restaurants.
