Man Killed After Falling From Roth Bridge

Location: Roth Bridge, Middletown, DE

Date of Occurrence: Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at 1:41 a.m.

Victim: 26-year-old male from Wilmington, DE

Resume: Middletown -Troopers are investigating the death of a 26-year-old Wilmington man who died this morning after falling from the Roth Bridge.

The investigation began at 1:41 a.m. when Troopers responded to a report of a man who fell from the bridge. Detectives determined that the victim had been driving south on Route 1 when his vehicle became disabled on the northern side of the bridge.

The victim called for a tow truck. Before the tow truck arrived, a friend retrieved the victim and they left the disabled vehicle. After exiting Route 1 and reentering it traveling north, they drove across the bridge and saw that a tow truck had arrived at the disabled vehicle.

The friend stopped the vehicle, and the victim exited and attempted to cross from the northbound side of the bridge to the southbound side. While attempting to jump he fell between the bridge spans and struck the ground below. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives are continuing their investigation into this incident, and no foul play is suspected. There were lane closures on Route 1 for approximately three hours as detectives conducted their investigation on the bridge.
