Some School Districts Quit Healthier Lunch Program

After just one year, some schools around the country are dropping out of the healthier new federal lunch program, complaining that so many students turned up their noses at meals packed with whole grains, fruits and vegetables that the cafeterias were losing money.

Federal officials say they don't have exact numbers but have seen isolated reports of schools cutting ties with the $11 billion National School Lunch Program, which reimburses schools for meals served and gives them access to lower-priced food.

Districts that rejected the program say the reimbursement was not enough to offset losses from students who began avoiding the lunch line and bringing food from home or, in some cases, going hungry.

Soooo..... It's not "for the children! It's for the money! Imagine that. Hey, schools, I've got an idea. So you're losing money because kids are packing a lunch sack from HOME, of all places? Well, then just cut back your staff, turn down the burners, and make what you are doing profitable!

What a concept. Next, kids will walk a mile to school like I did to avoid getting beat up on the bus while the driver watches and makes phone calls. At least on foot, you can walk with friends, and run away and knock on doors if hassled!

They turn their noses up because parents let the child dictate what they eat.

And 4:25, you have a problem with that, until you pay for my child's meal please shut the hell up.

4:44 Your mom is calling from the top of the basement step.

Um... 444, 4:25 and all the rest of us are paying for your child's meal. It's called taxes! Oh, wait, you would need to have a job that requires an education in order to pay taxes. I guess you have neither.

And, 4:51 has a great point. Look at a crowd picture from 1955 and compare it to one today. I think maybe we don't have a "hunger" issue,as the article cries about! Boy, howdy!

Back in the Sixty's when I was in elementary school, they tried to offer us "healthy meals" by giving us food that no kid would ever eat, like canned vegges, gravy with no flavor or salt, and mystery meat I would not even feed my dog. As a result of this, I bagged my lunch from 1st grade on. My mom packed me good things to eat like raw carrots, apples, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Give the kids what they like and there will be less waste. I remember so much food was wasted. most of the stuff was scrapped off the plates and put in the trash cans. To this day, I can't stand the smell of a cafeteria!

Families get adequate amounts in food stamps to provide lunch for school age kids. If the school's going to feed them free, deduct the amount from the food stamps. Why are we paying twice to feed lunch and breakfast to kids whose families get food stamps to feed them?

Your losing money, then stop buying pre-made foods and try making something for once what you serve aren't food. Today's lunch chicken nuggets that wasn't deep fried but reheated, idiot milk( yes idiot milk the school milk in Wicimico country has anti freeze in it making kids dumber.) and rotten fruit( yes rotten the fruit they serve aren't fresh and taste rotten. The skin is hard and the fruit is tasteless).

Maybe Mrs.Bammy could push for a law to force kids to eat the healthy food. It won't be the first time we've seen a peculiar law.

You need to see in schools, how much food the kids do not eat and throw out. Many get a piece of fruit because it is mandatory, then not one bite and it is in the trash.

Government Breakfast is mostly all high carb, sugar saturated, high glycemic, starchy foods. Eat that every day, with very little physical activity and we wonder... why there is rampant diabetes among young children?

This has nothing to with with the children. It's all about lining the pockets of the institutional food industry.
With all the food entitlements there is no reason that children have to be served free breakfast in school, nor given free lunches.
The democrats who "favor" this are morons. It's gross how they lower themselves to house slave levels doing the biding of the corporate "plantation owners."
