It becomes clear as I read these postings that all the years that the SFD personnel committee went to council and said that paramedics were the real need, they were truthful;. SFP leadership like Gordy and Hoppes said Big Boys need big toys and wanted more fire trucks and firemen. While fire is an ever present danger, the facts support the notion that ambulance and paramedics are what is really needed. Looks to me like its time for leadership with some common sense and a scaling back on the big trucks and specialized stuff that doesn't get used much and more attention on paramedics.

As has been mentioned before on Joe's SFD response log posts, the Calls For Service log on the fire department website does not pick up every call that all 3 fire station respond on. This is not an "Official Run Log". It has also been explained a few times that fire engines respond on more than just someone reporting they see a fire somewhere.

A fire department vehicle, be it a fire engine, ladder truck, rescue truck, brush truck or tanker respond to a plethora of “Fire Calls” each year. No where in the United States can you travel and when needing assistance from a fire department would you be refused service. The liability is too great. These types of calls are: not limited to auto accidents with injury or entrapment, auto accidents with no injury but have fluids spilled on the road, automatic alarms (smoke detector/CO/heat/water), appliance fires, mutual aid assist with another fire department, aircraft incidents, boat fires, boat in distress, boating accidents with injuries, bomb threats, citizen assists, chimney fires, structural collapse, structural collapse with entrapment, delayed ambulance responses, debris in roadway (trees, chicken waste), dumpster fires, electrical fires, electrical wires arcing, lines down, rescues (elevator, industrial, collapse, auto, farming, misc.), explosions, vehicle fires, furniture fires, gas leak, flooded room with electrical hazards, grease fires, furnace fires, subject locked in a vehicle, lightning strike, medical assists, natural cover (brush, woods, grass), odor investigation (smoke, gas, electrical, petroleum), petroleum spills, hazardous material incidents, non emergency service calls, smoke investigations, stand-bys at other fire stations, structure fires, rapid intervention team response, transformer fire, trash fires, vehicle fires and water rescues (drownings). The fire service is there to serve the citizens of their respective communities.

This is a lot to read but worth understanding why the fire department exists.

That's what you get when you promote people like Rick Hoppes.

Unless a fire is reported, keep my truck in the firehouse, period.

Well taxpayer that's not going to happen. You are in the stone ages with that mentality. The majority of citizens are delighted to see any fire vehicle show up in a timely manner to their emergency. Let the experts run the fire department and stick to what you do. They have the training on how things should be done.

Rick Hoppes trying to use big words again. You're big words do not your lame attempt to justify your job. We all know it's you trolling on Sbynews.com again. I thought you hated Joe?

You couldn't be more wrong. My name is not Rick Hoppes. I am not a member of the Salisbury Fire Department. I just educate myself before I try to make foolish comments like most do on this blog and this particular topic.

I can tell you this though. If it weren't for the paid fire service ability to supplement the volunteers in the Salisbury community there would be a much greater property and casualty loss in the community. See if you would bother to do your own investigation by speaking with your homeowner insurance provider they would show you the savings you are receiving with your community having paid personnel vs volunteer, close proximity to fire hydrants as well as the number and types of fire equipment a community uses. This is no secret or a conspiracy. The reality is that while 20-30 years ago most employers would allow volunteer members to leave to answer a fire call in their community and then return to work and the City of Salisbury back then was not as big nor was it that busy with vehicular traffic as is today. Fast forward to the the 21st century or a decade prior and you will see the the vast increase on commerce and vehicular traffic making it almost impossible to traverse the city streets safely and make it to the fire atation in a timely manner. Employers today vary rarely anywhere allow someone to leave work because of the downturn in production it would cost the employer hence having a "PAID" fire crew in strategic locations in the city during the city's busiest hours of the day.
