Manhole Cover ‘Popped Up’ Causing Vehicle To Flip Over

OCEAN CITY -- More details emerged this week on the single-vehicle accident on northbound Coastal Highway last Thursday afternoon involving a small car hitting a dislodged manhole cover in the area of 48th Street causing the vehicle to flip onto its roof.

Just before 2 p.m. last Thursday, Ocean City Fire Department units were dispatched to the area of 48th Street and Coastal Highway for a reported single-vehicle accident with entrapment. The investigation revealed a small, red, two-door vehicle was heading north on Coastal Highway in the area of 48th Street when it struck a manhole cover that was dislodged. The force of the light vehicle hitting the open manhole caused the vehicle to flip over on its roof.

Ocean City Fire Department crews and EMS worked to extricate the unidentified driver from the vehicle. The entrapped victim was removed from the overturned vehicle and taken to the hospital via ambulance. According to sources, the victim was hospitalized with injuries not believed to be life threatening.

someone maliciously moved the cover, and probably recorded the incident...

I don't know about you, but I get a chuckle reading about vehicles in resort area. Take a bus. It's not like they don't have them.

Manhole covers do not move themselves. They are HEAVY.... they only move if someone tries to make them move or is trying to steal them, or thinks it would be a funny joke to take one out to see what would happen if a car hits the hole. Guess we all know.

Locks need to be on manhole covers.

Someone told me that they were on a bus and heard about the manhole problem over the open radio on the bus. Shortly after, they heard another broadcast about a Neon hitting it which he assumed came from the same bus driver. Visiting drivers need to be more careful and monitor these broadcasts!

Man holes are not the only hole problem in Ocean City.

When you drive a Neon you are owned by Obama Motors. They are a piece of crap. Get a good ford with some strength.

Some years back Annapolis streets were flooded. The initial surge of water through the system had caused the manhole covers to pop off, after which the streets were covered with at least 2 feet of water. The mayor was advising people not to walk down the streets because several had fallen into the manholes and had drowned.I know that does not apply to manhole covers in OC,but they actually can pop out.

We witnessed a manhole cover incident in Ocean City years ago.
We were walking and saw water spitting out from the cover then all of a sudden cover blew 4 or 5ft in the air and water shot out 10ft and then started rushing out.
Found out later that nearby properties had sinks and tubs backing up too and the cause was the drain field was packed full of hardened grease and food particles from nearby restaurants being the likely cause.
Lesson is if you see water coming from a manhole cover don't stand there and look at it because it could be dangerous if hit by the cover.
