Congressman Harris Joins Congressmen Ruppersberger, Sarbanes To Announce Bill Honoring Maryland Shock Trauma Founder

Legislation would award prestigious Congressional Gold Medal to Dr. Cowley
WASHINGTON, DC – On Monday, Congressman Andy Harris, MD will join Congressmen C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger and John Sarbanes in announcing bipartisan legislation to posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to R Adams Cowley, who founded the nation’s first trauma center at the University of Maryland. The award is Congress’ highest expression of appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions to society.

Today, the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) boasts a 97 percent survival rate. Hundreds of medical personnel have trained there including members of the U.S. military in preparation for deployment to combat zones.
