4 Who Clung To Capsized Boat For Hours Rescued

DEAL ISLAND, Md. -Maryland Natural Resources Police say four were rescued after clinging for hours onto a capsized boat off Deal Island.

Sgt. Brian Albert tells The Daily Times of Salisbury says the boat's owner, 70-year-old John Riggs of Salisbury, swam to shore wearing a life jacket and alerted authorities about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Albert says five people on a fishing trip were aboard when the boat capsized during a storm. He says the four boaters clung to the 16-foot Carolina Skiff motorboat about five hours before help arrived.

A Carolina Skiff is a really good boat.If I had to choose what to cling to that would be it.

5 is a lot for a 16ft boat.

Unbelievable that no one had a cell phone in a zip-lock plastic bag. This is as important an item for boaters as a life preserver...

It was the son who swam, same name.

It was MSP Aviation who found the boat - the MSP pilot is a retired Coastie. It was two Somerset county fireboats that got to the people first following vectors given by MSP helicopter.

Just thought we should set the record straight!!!

Joe - photo should be MSP helicopter...they made the find - not the Coast Guard.

Seatbelts, helmets, beacons, life jackets should be worn at all times. DNR and Coast Guard should issue fines.
