Ocean City Prepares For July 4 Parking Switch At Inlet Lot

With the Fourth of July less than two weeks away, resort officials are confident in their preparations for what may well be the city’s greatest possible experiment in traffic logistics.

“It’s the first time we’ve done this, so there will always be something to learn, but we’re hoping it will go smoothly,” said city Communications Manager Jessica Waters, in regards to the plan to charge a $50 flat fee, upon entry, for Fourth of July parking at the inlet lot.

The plan was approved earlier this year by the City Council on the suggestion of City Engineer Terry McGean, who explained that he was less concerned about the rate and more concerned about solving the logistical nightmare that occurs every Independence Day following the city’s downtown fireworks show.

I hope they dont get one car the whole weekend. Boycott the parking lot!!! Ridiculous

Greed at its finest. And I predict an even worse nightmare as everyone looks for more affordable parking and an empty parking lot.

I quit going to OC years ago the giant sucking sound you hear is not the ocean it's the pull for the money in your pocket. Terry McGean said he is not concerned about the rate I have to wonder how many people that use the lot draws a paycheck like his. Gov't employee thinking at its best. Go ahead you dumb#$$%% price yourselves out.

Hope Pollitt dosen't see this think of how much he could charge for parking in Willards.

It's the greedy old troll under the bridge again. Why stop at $50, go for a thousand. I wouldn't go if it were free. It'll be a nightmare trying to get in and get out.

This is a joke right?

Let's talk about what is really going on. Typically in the early hours of the 4th the inlet fills up with hispanic farm hands from all over the shore and day tripper. They set up camp under the pier and in the lot. They trash the beach and parking lot.Walk the boardwalk and sleep over night in their vehicles. Then the day after we read articles and blogs of how it was out of control.

OC has a good enough park and ride lot west of the bridge. No need to pay $50. Regardless, the demand exists, so OC is doing what any business would do. And for those that will say OC is a government, not a business - my response is OC shouldn't be providing parking at all, so you would be paying a lot more if a private company owned the lot.

Those of you complaining would be complaining about the wait to pay to exit the lot. Sounds like you all wouldn't go to OC anyway.

Give me a break it's only $31 to park in NYC all day!

10:58 is spot on.

$50.00 sounds like a nice number. It should be double on holiday weekends.

STUPID-STUPID-STUPID! As was stated above this is going to cause more gridlock then ever because people are going to be out in search of less expensive parking.

I have warned people on this blog time and time again to stay out of Ocean City. Look - you have all seen the astronomical municipal salaries paid by the run-a-way resort town. Now is the perfect time for the resort to 'stick it to you' - and they are going to do just that. You will have your pockets picked and not even have time to realize what is happening.

STAY OUT OF OCEAN CITY!!! Willards is a very good alternative.

"Not concerned about the rate", why would they be? They are not paying for it. Just plain greedy and ridicilous. And yes you will have "logistical problems"" once everyone coming in finds out about $50 parking fee, they will be trying to turn around as fast as possible. And there will be a traffic jam miles long. Anyone reading this should know better and avoid being anywhere near Inlet parking lot on 4th of July.

Most likely, the problem will be with people wanting to turn around when they learn they need to pay 50 bucks to enter the Inlet lot. I seriously doubt there will be signs on Rt50 warning of the $50 parking charge at the inlet. The Park and Ride lot is certainly the way to go since parking is free and the bus ride is only $1 each way. As for the comments about the Hispanic farm workers, if they are legal, they have rights too. Otherwise, why not single out blacks and other minorities? You'll notice that, short of women, there are no minorities in OC Town Management with the exception of (cheaper to pay) Visa workers.

If you can find the park and ride. Daily times did a piece on the dew tour and I had to laugh when he stated that he did a U turn tour b/c he couldnt find the park and ride. I know what he felt like, I had the same experience! I would LOVE to use the park and ride if I could find it!

The only park and ride that I know of is right before the bridge before you go into Ocean City.
