New Report: 48 Percent of First Children Born to Unwed Mothers

Calling it “The Great Crossover,” a report by academics and social activists shows that for the first time in history the median age of American women having babies is lower than the median age of marriage – 25.7 and 26.5, respectively.

These “dramatic changes in childbearing,” the report states, results in dramatic statistics about American children. Among them, 48 percent of first births are by unwed mothers, and by age 30 two-thirds of American women have had a child, typically out of wedlock.

Kay Hymowitz, an author of the report and a William E. Simon Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, said at an event to release the report on Wednesday at the Brookings Institution, that it reflects how the view of what marriage is about has changed.

This is a clear case of women settling for less than they really want in life. In families of substance women would not settle. I pray for this country and the bag of cheap tricks that it has been sold.

Yes, there are many single mothers that are on the welfare roles and will stay there for life, as well as their children there are some single moms that work hard to overcome their situations. There are single moms out there that INSIST their children go to school, make the best grades possible and push them to better themselves. Dr. Ben Carson's mother is once such women that worked at least two jobs to ensure her children did better than her.
No, I am not a single mother. I married, then had children, and am a very happy and content grandmother. No, I am not a liberal, I am very conservative.
I realize that the norm in this article is single moms, not much education, not a lot of self-esteem, not much knowledge, or desire to learn parenting skills. Fathers are not in most of these situations.
Parents that love their childre, truly love them, will do their absolute best to see their children work to better their current situation and these are the mothers that truly deserve assistance in getting the very best for their children, children that are part of our future.

No matter how great some single moms may be, on balance this is a disaster for society.

Look around when you go shopping. How many of these mothers have several children, wic, food stamps, etc. This is how they make a living. Those children are nothing but a meal ticket.
