Maryland Spending Proposal Could Force County Tax Hikes

A bill before the Maryland Senate would require counties to maintain current levels of spending on public safety, transportations and libraries -- something critics say will almost certainly lead to county tax increases.

The legislature passed a similar law last year requiring so-called "maintenance of effort" for education, meaning counties wouldn't receive their share of state aid to education unless they provided the same level of funding they did the previous year. That effectively forbids them from cutting funding for education.

Montgomery County Council members said that would tie their hands when writing the budget and leave them no choice but to raise taxes in tough economic times.

If they make it costly to live in the country, there is no where else to go. I've been waiting for Salisbury to move their city limits forever. If the state jacks up county taxes, I'm out and taking my business with me.

when in the h ll are we the people and our local leaders going to go against the state and tell them to "pack sand" with their "controlling" laws that are very bad for us?

does anyone in leadership locally have the courage to stand up against the liberals on the western shore.

i know our representatives conway and cane won't because they represent annapolis. so who will work for us? who will say enough is enough? how about the entire county council; or do we have sissys in leadership? maybe they are afraid to buck the system. if you are afraid then get out and let real leaders lead.

is anyone else ticked at what we are being fed by the state? speak up and fight now before it's too late...
