County Tax Rates

http://individuals.marylandtaxes.com/incometax/localtax.asp
Wicomico county has one of the highest tax rates in the state. On par with some of the most affluent counties out west. If this is so, how come we don't have anywhere near the amenities that they have? Where is this money going?

Comparing tax rates is not the whole picture. When lots of people aren't paying taxes, a higher rate is needed so basic services can be supplied to the entire county. Those who pay taxes are basically subsidizes services for those who don't pay. That's very different from a high rate in a county where almost everyone is a taxpayer.

maybe if you read the budget, you can figure it out for yourself.

Yup - we're trying to rid ourselves of the wrong people. Instead of driving businesses away - we should be driving the freeloaders away.

I have no desire to pay for someone that can but won't!

You've commented on the tax rates, now look at the tax revenues. Two different critters.

The tax rate may be higher, but the assessment is much lower.

8:46 - agreed...the rates are what the individual contributes...the revenues are what all individuals combined contribute. Then take the revenues and divide that by the number of individuals that actually contribute - giving an effective rate. If everyone contributed, we could subsist on a lower rate - except for our overspending electorate....

Somerset is right up there also. Until this year it was higher than Wicomico.

That's for property taxes, now look at the piggyback tax. Why is Wicomico County amoung the highest in the state??? It all goes to Baltimore & O.C.

Face it we have corrupt politicians. The only thing they know to do is raise people's taxes without regard to their circumstances and possibly losing all they have worked for because corrupt people are in office city, county, state, and federal governments.

wicomico county is taxed to the hilt. we are NOT business friendly. we continue to make bad choices like building and purchasing properties we Can't afford. politte hasn't a clue how to budget because he's Never had to make a payroll and a profit at the same time. we need real leaders with a business background and integrity at the same time.

Unfortunately, we the people end up electing candidates to run our government that have made government a career. They usually do not possess the experience and skill required to run an efficient, profitable business. In government, you simply determine how much money you want, where to get it, and then get all those with conflicts of interest come out with support.

Pollitt is a prime example. When he runs for the executive position, even though opposed by very experienced, knowledgable, and successful business men, he immediately starts off with an advantage. This consists of all those with conflicts of interests; County employees, school employees and their families, as they know the tried and true burecrat will ask for little accoutabilty and cater to their adgenda.
This a very hard obstacle to overcome, and rarely at any level of government are the people successful in electing an objective and accountable business man. Hence, we will continue to look at increased cost and expanding government in this scenario. However, there is hope, as we look about our area we can identify counties, and states that have been successful in electing those that work diligently to keep costs and government expansion down; their tax rates reflect such.
Wicomic is definitely not one them and our only saving grace has been the revenue cap. In fairness, I do know the "Conways" of Annapolis brought unbearable pressure and intimidation upon our Council to raise taxes, unfortunately the majority did have the intestinal fortitude nor the testicular strenght to tell them to go to Hades.
