A Message About Guns From Governor O'Malley

There's no easy answer to the complex problem of gun violence. I've spent my entire career -- as a prosecutor, city councilman, mayor, and now as governor -- focused on trying to keep families safe and reduce violent crime.

We need a comprehensive approach. That's why in the next few days, I'll unveil a three-pronged strategy focused on gun safety, school safety and mental health.

1.) Gun safety: We should ban military-style assault weapons, limit large ammunition capacity, and require licenses for handgun purchases. We respect the rights of hunters and sportsmen and that's why our licensing requirements will NOT apply to shotguns or rifles.

2.) School safety: We will invest in security upgrades for schools, including cameras at entrances, automatically locking doors, shatterproof glass and buzzer entrance systems. We will also establish a "Maryland Center for School Safety," which will amplify our efforts by gathering meaningful data and serving as a central hub for collaboration between our federal, state and local law enforcement partners.

3.) Mental heath: We will improve data sharing practices between federal and state officials. In addition, we will invest more to improve mental health services so we can intervene early and reduce the potential for violent behavior. We'll expand crisis intervention teams, expand response services and establish a center for excellence on early intervention for serious mental illness.

This is a complex problem and we need a comprehensive approach. I look forward to hearing from you in the days ahead as we work to build a stronger, safer Maryland.

Thank you,

Martin O'Malley

When the Maryland State Police give up their "assault style" rifles, so will I.

It amazes me how many lawyers turned politician have no idea what the second amendment is about. It surely wasn't hunting.

This potentially illegal action by the Governor is exactly why we have the 2nd amendment! We will oppose his and Obama's tyranny.

Sheriff Lewis??
Where do you stand? Are you with them or against them? Are you going to uphold the constitution or side with the tyrants?

Yeah right, Sheriff Nelms may of stood with you but Lewis is a politician at heart and wants to be Governor Lewis

This is how the anti gun liberals get that "let's take away their guns" ball rolling and all on the backs of innocent slaughtered school children and their protective teachers. The shooter was so highly intelligent, that he would have bombed, knifed, hammered, or driven over as many children as he could have, had his mother not had guns (locked away/didn't stop him). He was such a nut full of hate that he had to kill his mother just to get access to the guns. His intent was to kill as many children from that school as he could, irregardless of what tool he had to use to make that happen. If he had chosen to use a car and run over as many of them as he could, do you think that the flaming gun liberals would now be trying to outlaw cars? Knives? Hammers? Liberals are screwy and shameless trying to using any reason/excuse (dead kids included) that they can to achieve their goals (no guns for anyone except criminals). All their lip service is but a premeditated agenda, decades old.

Wikipedia bio states: Martin O'Malley-groomed from childhood by his family, to make himself a life long liberal democratic politician.

@;44 you are right about mental health meds. Just look at some of the responses here.

1:23 I have yet to hear the NRA come out and clearly say the real reason for the people's right to own high power firearms. It is always about hunting or target practice or something. The general low information public hears them say the people need 20 round semi-automatic weapons to shoot a deer. The NRA won't ever just come out and say we need the guns to defend outselves against an evil government with 20 round semi-automatic weapons (or more substantial weapons). Just another reason the tide is going against us.

They will up the Meds, there will be a student inside the front door waiting for a ride that will gladly hit the panic bar for you, and since there have been 13.4% LESS crimes committed since the end of the assault rifle ban, they will bring it back anyway, fixing nothing.

That will never happen 2:44. Not one single democrat in the MD General Assembly has the guts and unless it's reported on a blog, any republican who brings this up would get ignored by the MSM.
The obvious fact is that firearms have been around since the founding of this country. School shootings are a new concept.
If anything firearms up until a few decades ago were widely available esp to young men in more rural areas and school shooting were unheard of.
It's unbelievable the level of idiocy this country has been reduced to and will blame an object on a tragedy.

Omalley? ass. We already register handguns! What an idiot statement. Who writes this crap for him? Biden?

Time to draw the line in the sand.
People will die because of O'Malley.

Heard this bs before: Just let me feel it, honey - I won't go any further.

Thousands of unborn innocent children are slaughtered every day in abortion clinics....yet there is no banning abortion clinics.
It's about disarming the citizens, which is another step needed for total collapse...then redesign America.

Good point.however...my question is how can anymore mental health be revealed with the hippa law that was enacted by Congress? No one is allowed to release any medical info to anyone without the patients permission or a court order.so how will this work?

For those that keep, it just might be near time to BEAR.
At least one Sheriff has stated he will not enforce any Fed. weapons ban.
Sheriff Lewis? You're a sportsman and active shooter Are you ready to give up your weapon's? Magazine's? How about your neighbors and family? Are they?
Will you enforce O'Malley's B.S. gun grabbing minstrel show or stand with the people and the Constitution of the United States against the tyranny?

Your moment.

Obama and O'Malley both know this is all a ruse... Now we hear the Sandy Hook shooter left his "assault" weapon in the car and used 4 pistols! They have been planning this for years. The government has bought up nearly all the ammo that can be made over the last year. Manufacturer's can't keep up with the orders and civilians have been nearly cut off.
Banning magazines is a dog and pony publicity show as they both know it only takes one shot for lights out. The ban will not do anything to improve safety.
More people are killed with hammers than with "assault" weapons or modern sport rifles as they truly are called. If they do ban these weapons it's just plain stupid because you'll still be able to buy a gun off the shelf that is MUCH more capable of delivering a heavier bullet more accurately at a longer distance than any assault weapon.
Food for thought.

The crazy kids these days are a product of their environment; God has been taken out of everything, tv and computers is all they do and God forbid you whip your kid's ass when he does something wrong! They know they can get away with anything and they are going to extremes...how do you like it now Libs?

This is the world you wanted and now you have it!

And just TRY to take away my guns!
