Route 113 Intersection Needs A Light, Residents Urge

SNOW HILL -- Weeks after the most recent fatality at a troubled intersection, Snow Hill residents turned out in force Wednesday night at a public hearing to demand a traffic light at Routes 113 and 12.

With the current state plan calling for the installation of “J-turns” at the intersection instead of a light, dozens of residents promised to do everything from a petition drive to marching down to Annapolis to get a light built instead.

That intersection has a long history of accidents, including fatalities. Since opening in 2006, the spot has seen close to 60 collisions.

But not enough fatalities to rate a traffic signal. One fatal collision is too many, but the citizens need to realize that the states money doesn't grow on trees and these signals cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Also there is a state formula and a federal highway formula for placing traffic signals and you can't just throw a signal up. It has to meet the federal and state guidelines. Mark my words, their will be no fully functioning traffic signal at that intersection.

The light at the intersection of Church St and Truitt was replaced with a blinking light following a really bad wind storm.Since then the # of accidents there quadrupled.Point being there is no replacement for a red light.Snow Hill needs one just as Church and Truitt in SBY does.

This article is incorrect in its description of how a J-turn would change the traffic pattern. Vehicles traveling on 113 would be able to turn left and cross the median to get onto 12. Vehicles traveling on 12 would not be able to go straight across 113 to continue on 12. Those vehicles would make a right turn onto 113 then make a u-turn to be able to then get back to 12. This is what was done at the Shore Stop on 50 in Hebron to prevent vehicles from crossing 50 at that intersection.

I just have to comment on this. I agree something needs to be done at the intersection. I feel for the families who have lost loved ones at that intersection. I know this will not be well received, but, I'm going to say it anyway. Honestly, I don't feel there is a major problem at this intersection. I feel a lot of it is driver attentiveness. I go through that intersection quite a bit both crossing 113 and crossing 12. The problem seem to be mostly when crossing 113 from the Snow Hill side. When I come to the intersection, I can see at least 1/4 of a mile North and at least 1/2 mile to the South PERFECTLY fine. The intersection needs something to protect the drivers from themselves, not because the intersection has a problem. Inattentive driving is the problem!!!

I feel the state should put in a light. I am 100% in agreement with that. I'm not convinced j-turns and such are going to protect the drivers from themselves.

One of the first things that should be considered is to lower the speed limit at that intersection and put some rumbling strips to warn drivers to slow down. For the life of me I do not understand how anyone can say a traffic signal is not warranted at this location. How many have to die here?

the easiest fix is just sue the pants off of the town, the county, and the state for not installing a light there next time someones dies or gets injured.

its unreal how they continue to put money in their own pockets instead of investing it where its supposed to go.

Why does everyone think that a traffic light will solve all the problems here?

Just ask any towing company: What is the best thing for your business?

The answer is: A new traffic light.

JOE..I can tell you I have seen alot of bad crashes over the years at Rt 12 & 113 and Public Landing Rd and Rt 113...I wont forget the victims and families that have been effected..With that said..Its the same old same old. When this section of Rt 113 from Public Landing Rd to Snow Hill Rd (RT 12) was being done an "Overpass"/"Bypass" should have been done.END OF STORY!!!.

But NO..Years cont. to go by and lives cont. to be lost. It was nice to see the State of Md build the overpass at Rt 113 and Rt 589 on the North End. I am totally against the J Turn and especially a Traffic Light. Many people THINK a light is the answer. They are wrong espec. in that stretch of the road. I respect what they are saying and they want a solution. The solution that EVERYONE should be fighting for is an "OVERPASS" crossing over Rt 12 leading from Stockton/Girdletree to Snow Hill.

Then a service Road from Public Landing Road should be build to loop back onto Rt 113.

This eliminates any cross over side impact crashes, Which are very hard to survive when one is struck on the side of the door.

PLEASE EVERYONE..If you care and love your family and friends lets push the Overpass/bypass issue and get this done...J Turns are an easy way out to save money. Lives are more important than money....
