The first rains for Hurricane Sandy have arrived in the Baltimore area even though the storm remains a few hundred miles off of the North Carolina coast.
As of 11 p.m. Sunday, Sandy was a Category 1 Hurricane, with top winds of 75 m.p.h., 290 miles east of Cape Hatteras. It was moving northeast at 15 m.p.h.
WBAL chief meteorologist Tom Tasselmyer expects the storm to turn west towards the east coast during the day on Monday. It is expected to make landfall in New Jersey at around 2 a.m. Tuesday. The Baltimore area is expected six to ten inches of rain from this storm.
The storm has forced the mandatory evacuation of Ocean City below 17th Street. Coastal Highway was flooded Sunday night by the U.S. 50 Bridge, forcing traffic to be diverted to the Route 90 Bridge.
