U.S. Department of Education: 79% of Chicago 8th Graders Not Proficient in Reading

Seventy-nine percent of the 8th graders in the Chicago Public Schools are not grade-level proficient in reading, according to the U.S. Department of Education, and 80 percent are not grade-level proficient in math.

Chicago public school teachers went on strike on Monday and one of the major issues behind the strike is a new system Chicago plans to use for evaluating public school teachers in which student improvement on standardized tests will count for 40 percent of a teacher’s evaluation. Until now, the evaluations of Chicago public school teachers have been based on what a Chicago Sun Times editorial called a “meaningless checklist.”

Why have the socialists be the teachers teacking our children? Firw them, get the Union out, and hire private teachers who are not union members or those who quit the union. The socialists will stay with the union!

Buy each socialist and their family members a ticket to their favorite socialist country, pay them for a 1 month vacation there, and once they arrive, cancel their passport and don't allow them back in the States!

With 55% of our tax money going to these schools, I would rather have the voucher. The voucher would be enough, if noy more, than my son's $6,000 a year private school. Public schools would never be able to compete, and the overload would force the public system to crash, and make the unions obsolete, as they should be.

Just like the Air Controlmen back in Pres. Regan time. Fire them and hire new people. What about teachers who are teaching for the children.

government schools have been indoctrinating your children for years. they did not get the education they could have if they had been home schooled or in private schools.

for those of you that still don't understand this, get your children out of this dismal excuse for education and figure it out for yourselves. you only get one chance to properly educate your child. sacrifice if you must; as most of us have done and are still doing. most of the parents that homeschool or use some of the lower cost private schools live week to week just like many of you. we drive 1 old car and we are budgeting constantly.
