A Comment Worthy Of A Post 7-18-12

"education is the next big bubble to burst. Within the next ten or so years, many colleges and universities are going to go out of business. So, here is a thought experiment for you, Joe.

Pretend SU closes it's doors (which it will, mark my words- does anyone seriously think when the economy collapses that the state will fund the hinterland branches of its university system?)...as mayor, what would you do with it?"

Publishers Notes:

Considering the Federal Government now has its hands in ALL student loans, I HIGHLY doubt you'll see any Universities close their doors. IF they got into trouble AND IF Obama were to get re elected, bailouts seem to be his legacy and the Universities would be top on his list to save.

That being said, IF I were to "Pretend" (as you stated) we'd be in a pretty major jam. I'm not so sure I'd be more worried about it closing than I would about ALL of the job losses we'd be facing. This is one of my biggest concerns here on the Shore. The lack of building permits for new chicken houses is slapping all of the citizens here in the face. We need to wake up, we're shrinking, not growing. Some may not mind that there are less chicken houses. However, the fact that the regulations here in Maryland are becoming so harsh, states like North Carolina are picking up the slack. We could be looking at massive job losses here in that Industry as well.

We cannot continue to depend on PRMC, SU or Perdue. We MUST start TODAY looking into how we can attract manufacturing and other sources of income. Salisbury has the infrastructure to provide incredible opportunities, yet we seem to have a Mayor who's only interest is entitlement housing projects instead.

Its not a Salisbury problem, its more of a Maryland problem that big business' wont come here.

9:31 that is a cop out. Keep passing that buck.

Yep, attracting manufacturing and other decent paying jobs is the key.
One thing I believe we must do is locate some successful downtowns as similar as possible in demographics as Salisbury's downtown and see what it is/was that made them successful.
This is something that should have been done (and is imperative to a good plan) by the Chamber and/or the revitalization committee instead of the plan they just took off the internet somewhere, rubberstamped it and lent their names to it.

@9:31 is partially correct, other than the individuals running Salisbury being complete morons Maryland is also taxing itself right out of business. With VA and DE at our boarders who would want to open a major business in MD when they can get by easier with taxes in VA and DE? Oh wait I meant "fees"...just call it what it is our government taking more of our hard earned money.

Perdue goes under and Salisbuey becomes a ghoast town.

I used to think that the federal or state government officials would recognize the problems in SBY politics and fix them. There apparently is no outside monitoring of SBY whatsoever.Business unfriendly practices have always been my concern. To me personally SBY is a very attractive business community.Attitudes in general have made it unattractive.

The point here is that we cannot tie our fortunes to just one or two industries. What if Perdue, or SU, or he hospital went down- or even shrunk significantly?
The current mayor wants to turn downtown into another ghetto. Really? When I drive down rt 13 to the mall, I think how much LESS of those type of people we need. Does anyone think section 8 housing WON"T turn into crap? When ever has it worked out? When?

Are you sure you want to run for mayor. You have ideas that exceed anything we've seen from our county executive and delegates. I hope mayor is just the beginning for you.

I say we cross that bridge when we come to it. Right?

anonymous 11:18, you see, that's what's wrong with you liberals today. You are REACTIVE rather than PROACTIVE!

No, I will NOT wait to cross that bridge when it happens.

I will face everything head on. As I stated in my Post, permits have about disappeared. The ONLY real projects we've seen are subsidized housing projects. It's time we stand on our own two feet.

anonymous 11:00, Thank You very much.

There is no way that low income housing will attract more business to downtown Salisbury. If anything it will run out what few businesses we have downtown.

No sooner than one new business sprouts up - two others close and then there are just more AVAILABLE signs.

For example - a new 7-11 is soon to open at the former gas mart located near Grants Texaco. Then - the florist across the street goes out of business and now there is another AVAILABLE sign. The same goes on all up and down Route 13 business section. There are just so many vacant strip malls around Salisbury - (i.e. -Old Mattress place next to Pop-eyes, then across the street - Boaters World, and the former pharmacy across from Popeyes).

Like I said - for every new one that opens - two announce closures.

10:22 - Perdue has already started...they recently laid off a big chunk of their IT talent and about as many left voluntarily - now no-one wants to come here because of the way those employees were (are still) treated. Some of their accountants/financiers have also been let go / left...and some HR folks have recently departed.

I tell you what once the sun goes down why dont the Mayor and some of the people ride up to Little Creek and get out and do some mingling. You wouldnt last two minutes. They are not humans they are animals that walk upright.

Why does"nt the University go back to what it started as: IT WAS A EXCELLENT STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE WE NEED GOOD TEACHERS AND NOT 600 COMMUNICATION MAJORS THAT END UP WORKING AT MCDONALDS AFTER GRADUATING FROM A UNIVERSITY.

It does my heart good to know help is on the way.

perdue can go down the drain. Since when does a private company that pays it's employees so little the only ones taking the jobs are illegals, all while polluting our land air and water just to make a buck to add to perdue's personal wealth need our support to stay here! I say good riddance maybe then maryland will be alot less polluted!

anonymous 11:52, the Council put the speed cameras in, the Council will have to take them out.

We have a LOT more things to worry about in Salisbury than speed cameras.

Here's the way I see speed cameras. It's no secret I hate them. HOWEVER, it should be known that I have NEVER received a ticket from one because I obay the law. Secondly, you have to admit, it only tickets you when you are 13 miles per hour over the speed limit.

That being said, anyone driving 13 mph ovber the limit in a school zone deserves a ticket, period. It's the placement of those cameras that ticks me off. The one on Rt. 50 should be outlawed. I want people COMING to Salisbury. I do not want to drive them away because a Police Chief or a Shewriff can't find other ways to raise money.

Look at the Volunteer Fire Departments. They raise their own money. The Police should be doing the same. Some departments want a K-9, they raise the money. NOT Salisbury!

Yeah, things will be changing come April. We, (as a community) are going to learn exactly how to be fiscally responsible and believe me, I have the answers on how to get it done WITHOUT it hurting the taxpayers one single bit.

anonymous 1:04, ahhh, the liber "we don't get paid enough" view.

Earlier today I spoke with an old friend. He got laid off and is now working, (get this) 2 jobs, 20 hours a day.

The pay is nowhere near what he used to make but companies are downsizing. Why is this guy a friend, because ALL of my friends have the greatest work ethics of any other group of people I know.

Some of us had to start working at 13 years old, full time. There was school, then a full time job. We did so to PROVIDE. We only live so long people and you can never buy back lost or passed time. Once its gone it's gone forever.

We have become a society of, well, I worked an extra 17 minutes and I want to be compensated for it. I can tell you this, my Wife goes into work 45 minutes before anyone else. She loves what she does and she has no interest in asking her bosses for that time each day.

I hope to bring that kind of morale to the employees of the City of Salisbury. I want people that WANT to be there. I WANT people who can LEARN from such leadership. I want people who I can call down the road, (should they have moved on to a better future) who can answer a question we might need answered.

Do me a favor 1:04, please do not ever come apply for a job in the GOB. We no longer need people we have to hold their hands. We want men, not boys.

I can tell you this. When I was 13 and needed a job, I'd be more than happy to work for Perdue. If I was 35 and lost my job and needed food on the table WITHOUT Food Stamps, WITHOUT welfare and WITHOUT Section 8 Housing I'd be happy to take on a job with Perdue.

THINK hard about what I'm about to tell you.

I am about to embark on the WORST paying job I have ever had in my entire LIFE.

The Mayor gets a salary of $25,000.00 a year!!!!! When you consider all the time and effort I'll be putting into rebuilding the City of Salisbury, I'll be making far less than minimum wage!

I'll run for Mayor because I care, NOT because it pays any real money. You ask ANY one of my friends if they know of ANYONE who works harder each day than I do. I mean that, ANYONE.

My days start at 4:30 AM and I go to bed at 11:00 PM. Hard work is nothing new to me, it's a part of who I am.

Now, 1:04, if you'd like to get off welfare, food stamps and get your own place to live for once in your life, come visit me and maybe we can work something out for you.
