Oysters Save Chesapeake, Taxes And You Can Eat Them Too

If you want to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay and you're fond of oysters, there's a program you should know about.

Buy a special float used to grow oysters on the water, and you can get all your money back in Maryland in the form of a state tax credit.

If you own a home on the water you can place the float under your dock and the growing oysters will naturally filter the water, improving its quality.

The oyster approach was known when Governor O'Malley decided to banish septic systems from the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. The environmental benefits of the oyster approach start immediately, while the first benefit of the septic approach won't be realized for 13 years due to the extremely slow speed of groundwater. The cost of the oyster approach could have been share by all Maryland residents, while the cost of the septic approach is borne by the landowners who didn't sell out to developers. O'Malley sure has disgusting way of rewarding Marylander's who do the right thing.
