Feeling ‘Naked’, Ocean City Employees Eye Union

OCEAN CITY – City Council chambers at City Hall was packed Tuesday night as a group, General Employees for Organization, surfaced to express their grievances with the City Council and their intent to be granted collective bargaining.

Ocean City Public Works employee James Moxley, who works in the maintenance division, spoke on behalf of the General Employees for Organization on Tuesday evening.

Moxley said the general employees are requesting City Council amend the town charter to recognize municipal employees’ rights to organize and collectively bargain. Moxley did not mention whether the employees are seeking binding interest arbitration as well.

Public sector unions, better known as, Municipal sponges. Taxes are high enough as is in OC!

Ocean City has one of the lowest property tax rates in the state! People in Salisbury pay about $.30 more per than OC home owners. That said, I'm not a fan of public sector unions.

just what we need more communist unions. NOT

So these people are going to hand over their negotiation right to some slime ball union, and the union will forever have their hand in the pocket of the employee?

Stupid is as stupid does.

The unions benefit most. And public service employees should not be unionized. Their salaries are paid by taxpayers and so taxpayers' $$ are paying the unions. Makes no sense. If they want to get paid more let them work in the private sector.

Fire all those buffoons slopping at the public trough.

Private unions are one thing Public unions should be outlawed.

Ocean City needs to start phasing out certain jobs that can be contracted out to the public sector then.

Oops I think 6:20 means private sector.

As long as town councils attempt to balance their budgets on the backs of their employees, collective bargaining is the fairest way to go.
All too often councils pass decisions that negatively effect their employees lives without so much as a blink of an eye. Collective bargaining only makes it so that any changes to the employees compensation plan have to come to the table and both sides agree on what is best for both parties involved.
This does not mean that a formal AFL-CIO union has to become involved. The employees can simply vote to begin their own union with no large affiliation.
Those that think the public sector employees are nothing than tumors on the pockets of taxpayers need to take a ride on an Ambulance, in a Police cruiser, in a bus dealing with drunk kids. Come see how hard it is keeping all the city's fleet in running order, or cleaning up what O.C. tourism has brought to the town. You will quickly find out that the little bit of pay that they get is not worth what they have to put up with.
So for the council to have the decency to come to the table and hear out their employees concerns is the least they can do. Whether it is as a union or not.

This makes me really lose respect for these OC employees that are in favor of this. The council should start immediately phasing out jobs and bid out to the private sector.
Also too many directors of this and that and too many departments are top heavy.
