Work Group Customizes Medical Marijuana Plan For Maryland

(Aug. 26, 2011) Maryland’s medical marijuana work group recently had its first meeting and will soon divide into subgroups to address concerns about the usefulness and safety of a statewide medical drug policy.

The work group met for the first time on Aug. 17, “to design a program that respects potential benefits as well as potential risks,” said Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

“The plan for the program will not be like California’s [medical marijuana program] where you can simply get an access card from a doctor to go to [a marijuana dispensary shop.]” Sharfstein said. “This would be overseen by academic centers and would be treated as an investigational therapy, which means there has to be a reason to use it based on evidence, based on informed consent and probably a set of other requirements. This committee’s job is to come up with those requirements.”

The "academic centers" sound a LOT like the State Police and their "approval" system for giving citizens their Constitutional rights to bear arms. As in, "you can ASK us for permission, just don't expect it". We know whats best for you.
