Orville G. Dryden Jr. is proud to announce his candidacy for the Salisbury City Council. A native of the Eastern Shore, Orville Dryden grew up in the farming community, working on his parents’ farm at an early age. He quickly adopted the philosophy and values of hard work and perseverance. As a young man, Mr. Dryden transitioned from the farm to begin a career with the United States Postal Service while also serving as a proud member of the National Guard. In his spare time, he assisted his father with a small grocery store. It was during these formative years, he witnessed first-hand the challenges of owning and operating a small business on the Eastern Shore. Dryden notes, "I understand the difficulties people go through to keep the doors to their businesses open and I feel it is critical that local governments do all they can to promote a healthy environment for the local business community." Dryden feels the City of Salisbury, and the Salisbury City Council in particular, needs to look to businesses for the city’s economic growth and the engine to local prosperity. "If we’re pro-business, we’re pro-growth, and if we’re pro-growth, we’re on our way to more jobs, less crime and a higher revenue stream without the obtrusive barrage of new taxes, fees and fines.", Orville states.
Mr. Dryden also has experienced the responsibilities of managing large budgets and working with peers to make payroll and keep the work force motivated. As a former Supervisor with the United States Postal Service and 13 years as Postmaster, Mr. Dryden was responsible for multiple budgets, as well as a large and diverse staff. He strived to continuously maintain a high level of excellent customer service throughout his career. This is the work ethic and respect for teamwork he hopes to continue with, if given the privilege to represent the City of Salisbury as a new council member. Dryden feels it is imperative that our City Council exemplify strong leadership, teamwork and consensus building among its members and our community as a whole.
Above all else, Dryden wants to put the City first. He states, "Whether it’s the members of our business community, the brave men and women of law enforcement or our fire departments; I feel it is important to, first and foremost, listen to the citizens of Salisbury and work hard every day to assure them of a safe and prosperous future. I have been a resident of Salisbury for the last 25 years, raising my two children right here, in the City of Salisbury. Both attended and graduated from Parkside High school. Additionally, my daughter then pursued a degree from Salisbury University and graduated with distinction in 1999. I am invested in this community and I want to see it thrive for future generations."
Dryden feels that his "common sense approach" and his past experiences will enable him to work together to find the solutions to the many serious issues now facing our city. Whether its crime, the economy, budgets or business, he is looking forward for the opportunity to create unity within our community so our citizens can continue to enjoy all of the benefits that Salisbury has been known for in the past. "I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead and am proud to have the opportunity to run for the City Council of Salisbury."

Civic Organizations: Dryden has been a member of the Lions Club for 40 years and has served in many capacities including president, is also a 40 year member of the American Legion, and a member of the Salisbury Moose Lodge, and various other organizations.

Orville is a fine man and worthy candidate. Having spoken with him on many occasions, I find him to be hardworking and very knowledgeable about the issues affecting this city.
Government worker..... I'm not so sure about this.
I guess it's fair to point out that Mr. Dryden left (retired?) a Unionized Federal job with an Agency that's not known for managing a balanced budget.
Sure sounds like he's qualified.

Great, lets see how long it takes to smear this guy's name. I do not know Mr Dryden so I cannot say what kind of job he will do for the city council - but you can bet your sweet pootie that I will be attending functions to find out his qualifications and his platform. Too often now we are swayed by others gossip and hateful remarks. Those days are over for me and if you are truely concerned about Salisbury that should be your stance also.
Is there any profession that a candidate has retired from, or is now in the employement of, that you all feel would have correct credentials to run? Is there any civic organization that has the approval of you all that would make a candidate better qualified to run?
Perhaps the thing to do is write up a list describing the perfect candidate - and than - any person fitting that description would be allowed to run for office.
It makes me angry to see smear tactics used against persons running for office. Anyone who can do a better job should run themselves. Lets cut the vile remarks against everyone who chooses to run.

I can't believe he is being critized for being in the Lions' club or American Legion - or retired from a federal job where he worked many years. Mike Dunn is his son-in-law - not stepson. and it is not the politican Mike Dunn. People amaze me how they just want to critize without even knowing a person. And we wonder why our country is going to hell in a handbasket!! We want to critize and put down people who are trying to make a positive change in the community. Very Sad!

Shameful to see such negativity surrounding our local politics. Sure there has been a great deal of mayhem with regards to the city council, but the negative attitudes will only contribute to the demise of this city. I admire anyone willing to 'step into harm's way' and announce their candidacy for either of the available seats.
Dissapointingly, it seems to me that everyone is suspect of having a hidden agenda, although it may be the case in some situations. I say let time decide those things, we need progress now.

If Mike Dunn the landlord is his son-in-law, then there is a SAPOA connection. I'm not going to knock the man, but the SAPOA connection isn't desireable. This city's been run by landlords and elites too long.

SAPOA has already promised to spend $100,000 to support 3 candiates for city council to assure they have 4(FOUR) pawns to smash Jim Ireton, Debbie Campbell and Terry Cohen. That's right FOUR candidates and they already have the one in the name of Shaney Shields.
Be very suspicious about these candidates that are stepping forward if you don't know anything about them.

SALISBURY — Mike Taylor, a 52-year-old native of Berlin, has filed to run in the upcoming City Council election. Taylor, a newcomer to the political scene, is a stage manager at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center and has lived in the city for 13 years.
wow people.. so mis informed. First of all he is not Mike Dunn's stepfather. He is his father in-law. I've known him as well as Mike for over twenty years and they are both great people. Mr. Dryden would be a great choice for city council and a welcome change from the previous ego filled , self - serving bunch
Orville grew up in Somerset County. I remember when he worked for a while at the Fruitland post office after one of the postmasters died. He seemed like a good guy. Let's wait to hear more from him before jumping to conclusions. I'm at least willing to hear him out.
There are at least 2 Mike Dunns in this town. Orville has nothing to do with the Mike Dunn that was on the City Council. Can I make myself any clearer.
I think it would have been a good idea to declare some Political Party connection with his announcement, it would help to know that right out of the gate.

Orville Dryden grew up in Perry Hawkin. His father was one of the finest people you'd ever want to meet. From what I remember about Jr. he is a good, honest man. As for Mike Taylor, he is another good man. Didn't know he was from Berlin as he went to Bennett High Schools since 7th grade.
Orville will be a good commissioner. Also he isn't connected with the vile Mike Dunn but the good Mike Dunn. Good kids also.
I don't think most are being critical of the PERSON. There is a genuine interest however in having representation that more closely reflects the will of the people such as decreased spending, smaller Government, and lower taxes. Add to that creating jobs, creating an atmosphere for businesses will want to locate here (which would bring more jobs), and how about some thoughts for lowering crime in Salisbury. Just belonging to the Lions, the AL, and delivering your mail for a long time under a job for life career doesn't contribute to changes what many citizens want.
Yeah well maybe he will not attack the elderly that have small apartments in the homes just to pay the bills. Hey City of Salisbury quit attacking your residents and figure out how to bring back companies that will employ us. If you don't soon we move away and quit paying your higher taxes.
Can we vote eveybody out and start over? The way I see and hear it we would be better off.

Here we go - no wonder ANYONE with good qualities doesn't want to be involved with city politics. You don't hear about this crap in the county. Orville Dryden is a good, decent person. I've known him for at least 30 years. I don't live in the city and can't vote, but if I could, not just knowing him, but knowing who he is and stands for, I would probaly cast my vote for Orville. Is there anyway to get some true business people back running the city like 20 yrs. ago??? And don't give us that stuff about working for the US Post Office. People it's serious times.....
Since I am a 40 yr member and Past District Governor of Lions Clubs International I take offense to some comments I read here. I also am a retired U. S. Postal employee, as well as a Navy Veteran of 10 years. I am a member of the American Legion since 1967. I know Orville Dryden, Jr. If I was a voter in Salisbury, I would most certainly vote for this fine gentleman. Best wishes for your success "O".

The County does not have the problem of SAPOA and non-resident business owners who have run the City into the ground for years. They will surely try to keep contol in this years elction abd have already got one candidate (Boda) in the field. Some suspect that Dryden may be another.
Explain how SAPOA and businesses have run the city into the ground. THERE are very few NEW BUSINESSES here in Salisbury, and Businesses leaving every day because there is an ANTI BUSINESS MENTALITY in the city government. This city has been anti business for years. You, like Terry and Debbie, do not support your arguments with facts. You make your argument into a personal attack complete with the usual broad generalization. Your anti business, anti SAPOA smear is dated and inaccurate and we are all tired of hearing it.
