A Letter To The Editor

The Daily Times
Good morning Joe,
I have thought long and hard before sending you this email. I am really upset with the Daily Times.  They printed an article about an accident where a woman who was a mother, sister, daughter, and Friend passed away.  What I am upset about is why did they think they needed to bring up her past criminal history, it had nothing to do with her death.
We all have made mistakes in our past that we would like to forget and I would pray to God when it is our time to go people do not focus on our mistakes.
This woman was a great person.  She was the homeroom mother for her daughter, went to every baseball, and soccer game for her son.  She always put a smile on every ones face.
I feel bad for her children that one day they may have to read that article, that is not the mother they knew and love so much.

DT should be ashamed of themselves!

While it is a tragic loss for her family and friends, this "letter to the editor" and all the comments on the DT website under the article are bringing a lot of extra attention to this story. Negative attention that seems somewhat inappropriate since there is a family out there mourning the loss of their daughter, sister, mother, aunt, fiance. The press is going to continue to report things as "they see fit", especially the DT. Sherrie's family isn't the first to endure this sort of story, nor will they be the last... and the incessant griping about it just brings more attention to it. Think about the people who probably have not read the article, but now that they have read this "letter to the editor" they might go in search of the story.

What is the difference in stating her "license was suspended at the time of the accident" and "excessive speed appeared to be a factor"? I don't see any mention of her criminal history per se... a license could be suspended for any number of reasons. My sister's license got suspended because she did not renew in time... that doesn't mean she has a criminal history. And isn't it typical that it gets reported when someone's license was suspended and they were involved in an accident?? It's not the first time I have read that.
Why isn't anyone chastising the brother for his statement... He should have just stopped at "my sister was a beautiful, loving person" instead of going on to say "her head wasn't always in the right place". No one needed to know that, and if he had not said it then no one would have been able to publish it. All the comments, here and the DT website and just going to make people more curious about the situation and the people who now how to access court records are going to try and look her up to see what on Earth everyone is talking about.
May this woman be able to rest in peace.

The article online has since been changed but not what has been printed which only proves that someone at DT realized it was a major mistake. Legally no but morally YES. The bottom line is when an accident normally happens the persons prior criminal past or upcoming court cases are not published. She was the sole victim of the accident and no one else was involved. Sherrie was a loving person with two young children who will never have the chance to have her by their side through lifes many milestones. Her memory should be cherished without outside negative influences...end of story. RIP Sherrie your family and friends know the beautiful person you were.

"What I am upset about is why did they think they needed to bring up her past criminal history, it had nothing to do with her death."

she was considered a menace on the roads due to bad decisions she made. hence, the license was suspended. i think it has DIRECT impact on her death. obviously, IMO, if she was so great, she wouldnt have had half of those charges.

also, when someone dies, why do we wait until they die to speak highly of them? if they were indeed a bad person, why should we say how great they were? the gospel station i listen to actually was speaking of this today. tell someone you love them and appreciate them TODAY, not after they die. if they are bad, help them correct so we dont have to reveal the actual person you were.

if you want to feel bad for someone, feel bad for the children.

Past criminal history??? really, not that i care about it either way, but it seems that her criminal history is pretty much in the present, between driving on a suspended license and possibly speeding. looking through the court records, it seems she has had a bad 10 years. maybe if you spent as much energy on her, as you did someone delivering the news, maybe she wouldnt be where she is today.

dont kill the messenger just because you dont like the message they deliver.

You all are pathetic.....the point is NOT that she made mistakes or poor choices but that she was pretty much "smeared" but our so called local "newspaper". Stop just for a few seconds and place yourself in her family's shoes.....if it were your loved one who passed in a tragic accident you would not want to read about any type of negative past. I read the news pretty regularly and can't remember ever seeing someone's previous or upcoming court history published. Cause of accident yes, driving on a suspended license yes, prior criminal charges NO. The accident wasn't a result of criminal activity it was an accident. Excessive speed is noted which everyone has been guilty of, combine that with a wet dark country road and the result was tragic. Wildlife especially deer are known to the specific area......it was an accident. 12:44 and 1:02 she WAS a great person despite poor decisions and it would be nice for her children to remember her that way......I guess you both must fall under that perfect category that most normal people know doesn't exist!

Amen 12:44
You should love and appreciate everyone the most in the present. not after they are gone.
And I don't get it, What criminal history is everyone talking about? I read the article and I didn't see any mention of a criminal past other than a relative said something about her head being in the wrong place. But even that didn't mean she had a record.

@152pm

i do not fall under the perfect category, but i do not fall under the naive category nor do i fall under the blind category. if my family member did something stupid, so be it. i recognize right from wrong and understand we are all not perfect. however, what you (alot of you) are doing are attempting to make her perfect. she was not. her brother's statements attests to that. we need to quit trying to pull the wool over our own eyes and make peace. just dont lose TRUTH in the process.

"she WAS a great person despite poor decisions"

a man (or woman) can only be judges on his/her actions. if those actions/decisions were poor...

i think one thing we can agree on is that everyone wishes this accident never happened.

I find it ironic that all these posters come to this site to complain about smearing someone.

12:44 Your compassion is a bit short of most Christian's viewpoints, and outspokeness.
