Papa John's Apologizes For Receipt's Racial Slur

(CNN) -- Papa John's Pizza fired a cashier at one of its New York restaurants and apologized to an Asian-American customer for a receipt that identified her as "lady chinky eyes."

 "We were extremely concerned to learn of the receipt issued in New York," the company said in a statement posted on its Facebook page Saturday. Minhee Cho, a communications manager at nonprofit investigative journalism group ProPublica, posted a photo of the receipt on her Twitter account Saturday morning and by the afternoon it was picked up by a local newspaper.

EASTON Potential candidates in Maryland's elections this year have just three more days to register with the State Board of Elections, and as of Friday, several open positions still had no one signed up to run.

This year's primary will be held April 3, and the final day for a candidate to ensure his or her name is on the ballot is Wednesday. Those running for federal or state offices must file with the state board, while those vying for county seats must file with their corresponding county election offices.

At 70, Stephen Hawking Wants Space Colonization

CAMBRIDGE, England - Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking was too ill to attend a conference in honor of his 70th birthday Sunday, but in a recorded message played to attendees he repeated his call for humans to colonize other worlds.

University of Cambridge Vice Chancellor Leszek Borysiewicz told the conference that Hawking, who is almost completely paralyzed because of Lou Gehrig's disease, had only recently been discharged from the hospital for an unspecified ailment.

"Unfortunately his recovery has not been fast enough for him to be able to be here," Borysiewicz said.

Book: White House Hosted 'Wonderland'-Themed Extravagant Hollywood Halloween Bash Before Burton Film Release

The White House is pushing back against claims from a new tell-all book that staff kept an extravagant, Hollywood-created Halloween Party under wraps due to fear it would create imaging problems.

White House spokesman Eric Schultz says the event, which was decorated by Tim Burton and featured Johnny Depp in his Mad Hatter role from Burton's acclaimed "Alice in Wonderland," was held for local children from the Washington D.C.-area and for hundreds of military families.

Movers Cash In As More Renters Being Evicted

NEW YORK — Property owners across the country bear a burden from the recession: paying a fortune in moving and storage costs to evict tenants who fail to pay their rent.

But the owners' losses are a boon for the companies that clear out homes. Their business has skyrocketed, "making money out of people's misery," said David Robinson, an attorney for Legal Services NYC, which helps low-income New Yorkers navigate the eviction process.

Hardest-hit are ethnic urban neighborhoods, where about twice as many renters are forced to leave as in the general population, according to housing experts.

One-Third Of Child Sex Abuse Caused By Minors

(NEW YORK) — Recent high-profile cases of child sex abuse have roused national revulsion against the adults who perpetrated them. Rarely mentioned is the sobering statistic that more than one-third of the sexual abuse of America's children is committed by other minors.

For many of the therapists and attorneys who deal with them, these juvenile offenders pose a profoundly complicated challenge for the child-protection and criminal justice systems. It's a diverse group that defies stereotypes, encompassing a minority of youths who represent a threat of long-term danger to others and a majority who are responsive to treatment and unlikely to reoffend. "There's a long continuum, from kids who will never do it again to a kid who probably will be an adult rapist/pedophile," said Steve Bengis, executive director of the New England Adolescent Research Institute in Holyoke, Mass. "It's not a 'one size fits all' yet we end out with public policy that's geared toward the worst 5 percent."

Novartis Consumer Health Inc.,  one of the world’s largest drug companies, announced today that it is voluntarily recalling several over-the-counter products after complaints about broken pills found in some products.

The company described the move as a precaution to strengthen its standards.

The recall follows consumers complaints of chipped and broken pills and inconsistent bottle packaging, but Switzerland-based Novartis says these issues have led to no adverse events.

Why Do We Ignore The Civilians Killed In American Wars?

As the United States officially ended the war in Iraq last month, President Obama spoke eloquently at Fort Bragg, N.C., lauding troops for “your patriotism, your commitment to fulfill your mission, your abiding commitment to one another,” and offering words of grief for the nearly 4,500 members of the U.S. armed forces who died in Iraq. He did not, however, mention the sacrifices of the Iraqi people.

This inattention to civilian deaths in America’s wars isn’t unique to Iraq. There’s little evidence that the American public gives much thought to the people who live in the nations where our military interventions take place. Think about the memorials on the Mall honoring American sacrifices in Korea and Vietnam. These are powerful, sacred spots, but neither mentions the people of those countries who perished in the conflicts.
