As a City of Salisbury employee and I can't tell you how many times I
have been stabbed in the back by my co-workers who are trying to get
promoted. They have gone to extreme extents to do the best damage they
can do to ruin my reputation. Why? Because I am more trained and
educated than they are and I actually do work. Most of the other
employees are watching TV or playing games like Solitaire on the
computer. Most of the locals are ignorant and depend on the good ole boy
system to get promoted. They will do anything to jump over someone to
get to the top. The bad thing about it is the top management help them
do it and they get away with it. Every time there is an opportunity for a
promotion the criteria changes to fit the person that top management
wants promoted. I am confident this is happening in all departments in
the City of Salisbury and I would like to hear others comment on their
problems with City of Salisbury departments. They make the rules as they
go along. This is something that Jim Ireton has known even before he was
elected and he has yet to do anything about it.
I would like to see this posted as a letter to the editor and see the horror stories about employment with the City of Salisbury. I am confident people will speak out.

EPA's Wood-Burning Stove Ban Deals Blow To Rural Homes
The Environmental Protection Agency recently imposed restrictions on wood-burning stoves that will deal a blow to rural Americans who rely on wood to heat their homes.
Critics charge that the rule changes were enacted following pressure from environmental groups.
The EPA tightened restrictions in January on the level of fine airborne particulate emissions that wood-burning stoves can emit, from 15 micrograms per cubic meter to a maximum of 12 micrograms.
The EPA restrictions would ban the production and sale of the kinds of wood-burning stoves that compose 80 percent of those currently in use in the United States, Forbes reported.

Worcester Board Of Ed Votes To Change School Date To Day After Labor Day
WCPS broke ranks with the rest of the state this week when the Board of Education voted to return to a post-Labor Day start of Sept. 2.
“I didn’t mind being the last school district in the state to go before Labor Day,” said Board of Education President Bob Rothermel, “and I don’t mind being the first school district to go after Labor Day. Maybe it will send a message.”

Actually I moved to Delmarva from New Jersey nearly 20 years ago. I loved the area and still do but last year we gave up and left. The area has been in decline for a long time and we saw the writing on the wall. So you born here's go ahead and take your shots. You don't have much left and as you cry the blues I'm enjoying the wonderful weather and great job I have now living in Florida. They understand that newcomers creat jobs, and help with progress. Ray Rice's attorney called Saturday's domestic violence incident between the Baltimore Ravens running back and his fiancée a "very minor physical altercation," but surveillance footage from the Revel Casino in Atlantic City suggests it was a very major confrontation.
The footage obtained by TMZ Sports shows the former Rutgers star dragging knocked-out fiancée Janay Palmer out of an elevator shortly after Atlantic City police say they assaulted each other at the casino.

Police Beat, Stun Deaf Man After Confusing Sign Language With Threatening Gestures
HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Jonathan Meister was retrieving some stuff he was storing at an ex-roommate’s home when he looked up to find several members of the Hawthorne Police Department approaching.
The South Bay man claims officers didn’t give him a chance to explain what he was doing before placing him in handcuffs, beating him and using a stun gun to shock him into submission.
The problem began when police reportedly misunderstood Meister’s attempts to speak in sign language as threatening gestures.

Bill Requires Many Employers To Offer Paid Sick Leave
The House Economic Matters Committee heard testimony Tuesday on the the Maryland Earned Sick and Safe Leave Act, HB 968, sponsored by Baltimore County Del. John Olszewski Jr. and 65 other Democrats. Businesses that employ 10 or more would be forced to provide one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours an employee works. Employees paid sick leave would cap at 56 hours per year, equaling one week of the calendar year.
Businesses with nine employees or fewer would only be required to provide an hour of unpaid leave for every 30 hours of work. Employees could cash in this sick time when either they or a family member takes ill and requires care, or if the employee is a victim of domestic or sexual assault and wants to seek mental health treatment.

Wilmington - Troopers have arrested a 17 year old John Dickinson High School student on weapons charges after a loaded handgun was found concealed in his backpack.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at approximately 1:53 p.m. after a Delaware State Trooper, assigned to the John Dickinson High School as a School Resource Officer (SRO), was notified by school officials of a tip received that a 17 year old male student, later identified as Dahmere White-17 of Wilmington, Delaware was possibly in possession of a handgun, concealed in his backpack. The Trooper and school staff were able to locate White in a first floor classroom while class was in session. The Trooper and school staff contacted White inside of the classroom where he was immediately separated from the backpack and school staff escorted White into the main hallway. The Trooper entered the classroom and took possession and secured the backpack located on the seat of the desk where White had been located. White immediately fled on foot down the main hallway and exited the school fleeing into a wooded area. A subsequent search of the backpack revealed a fully loaded Kel-Tec 9mm Luger semiautomatic handgun with the serial number obliterated. (Evidence photo attached)
An extensive terrain search of the surrounding area for White was conducted by Troopers assisted by the Delaware State Police Aviation Helicopter Trooper 4, and New Castle County Police. At approximately 2:35 p.m. White was located by Troopers on Tapley Lane in the development of Limestone Acres, where he was taken into custody without incident.
During and after the incident, Troopers in coordination with school officials took appropriate and preventative safety and security measures to ensure the safety of the students and school faculty. There was no immediate threat or danger to the safety of the students or faculty during this incident.
Further investigation and interviews revealed that White was a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Dahmere White was charged with the above crimes and was being held pending arraignment at the time of this release.
Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The President told Charles Barkley in a television interview last night that he wants create special educational, mentorship and apprenticeship programs – for a specific segment of the population.
“We’re going to pull together private philanthropies, foundations working with governors, mayors non-profits and we’re going to focus on young men of color and find ways in which to create more pathways to success for them,” the president told Barkley.
He said he wants to expose young men of color to career options that could pay as much as $35 an hour.
“Across the board from the time they’re young all the way to their first job, we want to help more young African-American men and Latino men succeed,” he said.

Crisfield is struggling to pick itself up from the economic downturn
Coming into Crisfield, a small town on the eastern seaboard of Maryland, the first sight is of a deserted main street with empty storefronts on either side.
Driving further into town, I see rows of foreclosure signs hanging in front of derelict houses - many people have been unable to keep up with their repayments.
After driving three hours from Washington DC, we are hungry - but unable to find a restaurant to eat in. The ones that we see on the web are no longer open for business. The closest thing to a place to eat is a store selling raw seafood. The clerk cooks some for us and allows us to sit in the corner to eat.
A short drive through the town centre and we reach the harbour. The frozen sheets of ice on the water mirror the economic deep freeze that small towns like this have endured since the big banks in New York dragged the US into recession five years ago.
But the people I meet don't blame the bankers - a popular pastime at dinner parties in the capital. Instead, the mayor of Crisfield, PJ Purnell, says: "There's a joke that we tell around here - if there's a Depression it'd take us ten years to see it because we've been depressed for so long."

Critics of a proposed Federal Communications Commission study that would send researchers into newsrooms across America say the new chairman's vow to tweak the plan doesn't go far enough -- with one leading media group calling on the agency to scrap the study entirely.

Salisbury Maryland Makes National News: Metro Areas With The Fastest-Shriveling Economies

• Unemployment rate: 8.6% (66th lowest)
Many of the nation’s economies that have contracted the most do not share much in common. These cities are geographically diverse, located from the Northeast to the Gulf Coast and the Midwest to the West. They also have very different economies. Charlottesville, Virginia, and Binghamton, New York, are home to large universities, while in Decatur, Illinois, the largest employers are in the manufacturing sector.
Local economies often rely on one production or trade sector. As long as the sector is booming, it can be a source of economic and job growth, but there can be a downside to this reliance. Local economies often follow the cycles of large companies manufacturing products for the global markets in their backyards, Alec Friedhoff, senior research analyst at the Brookings Institution, told 24/7 Wall St. “If you’re a small metro area depending on a vulnerable export sector, once that industry goes, you’re in big trouble,” Friedhoff said. In one prominent example of this, Caterpillar cut hundreds of jobs in Decatur last year in response to a global slowdown in the mining industry. Decatur’s economy shrank by nearly 5% last year, and no metro area had a larger proportional job loss.

$140M Prize: State Wins Manufacturing Institute; Will Be Built In Canton

The federal government will invest $70 million in the U.S. Department of Defense-led Lightweight and Modern Metals Manufacturing Innovation Institute to be headquartered in Canton, with at least another $70 million in matching money to come from private or other public sources.
It wasn’t known when the institute would begin work or how large its presence would be in southeastern Michigan, with many of the consortium’s members at facilities around the country. But by bringing the institute’s home base to metro Detroit, it continues the area’s standing as a pre-eminent area for American manufacturing.

3 white victims dead after Detroit mayhem
Four black people are in jail in Detroit for robbing, stabbing, shooting, torturing and killing three white people. Then burning down their house and stealing their car.
Police arrested the suspects last week when they found the murder victim’s car at one of their homes, along with bloody clothing and ID from the victim. In addition to charges for murder and arson and robbery, at least one of the suspects was charged with possession of heroin.
“The nature of the wounds were horrific, all three victims were stabbed multiple times,” said Sgt. Michael Woody of the Detroit police. “In addition, the fire had been obviously set to cover up what turned out to be a brutal murder in an attempt to destroy potential evidence.”

The bill, which the state House of Representatives passed by a 33-27 vote Thursday, now goes to Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican and onetime small business owner who vetoed similar legislation last year but has expressed the right of business owners to deny service.

The Washington Post reports that California-based production company Media Rights Capital has pushed back its filming schedule for its third season to see if lawmakers boost credits for film and television projects enough.
Last year, lawmakers boosted the $7.5 million annual allocation to $25 million, but they're divided on whether to do that again.
"This just keeps getting bigger and bigger" Del. Eric Luedtke (D-Montgomery) said at a hearing on the issue last week. He has supported film tax credits in the past. "And my question is: When does it stop?"

A multibillion-dollar tax that President Obama's health care law imposes on the insurance industry will be passed onto consumers, according to a new study by American Action Forum, costing individuals and families hundreds of dollars annually starting this year.
As one way of financing the $2 trillion cost of expanding insurance coverage, Obamacare imposes a tax on the health insurance industry, which is assessed to each insurer based on their share of annual premiums collected by the industry.

Bill Would Provide More Information On Md. Government Contracts
Greater transparency in Maryland government contracting is the goal of legislation that would provide more information about each contract on a state website.The Senate Budget and Taxation Committee is considering a bill that would pour $1.4 million into the growth of the website that allows the public to view payments made to state contractors.
The Maryland Funding Accountability and Transparency website (spending.dbm.maryland.gov) under the Maryland Department of Budget and Management is a listing of all payments greater than $25,000 that state agencies have made to contractors from the years 2008-13. The public can see the amount the agency paid, the year, and the zip code where the vendor is based.

Motorist Struck, Killed After Exiting Vehicle On Route 589
SHOWELL -- A 58-year-old man was killed last night on Route 589 when he was struck by a vehicle after exiting his running Suburban in the travel lanes.
On Friday night, at about 8:30 p.m., a motor vehicle collision was reported to have occurred in the area of Route 589 north of Showell School Road. Upon the arrival of troopers, it was determined a pedestrian was struck and suffered critical injuries.
The pedestrian, Aaron Bernard Simon, was taken by ground to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin where he was pronounced dead soon after arrival. The family has been notified.
Through the investigation, it was determined Simon was driving a 1993 Chevrolet Suburban southbound along Route 589 north of Showell School Road when, for an unknown reason, he stopped the vehicle in the travel portion of the roadway. Simon then exited the vehicle and began to walk south in the northbound travel lane. There were no street lights in the area, but Simon left his vehicle running and the headlights on with the hazard lights activated.
Mark Edward Iacona was driving a 2007 Cadillac Escalade northbound on Route 589 when he came upon the stopped Chevrolet. Iacona said he had slowed and moved slightly to the right because he did not know why the Chevrolet was stopped and he wanted to give the vehicle more room. Subsequently, he did not notice the pedestrian and the impact occurred. Evidence suggests the pedestrian was in the travel portion of the roadway when he was struck and not on the shoulder. There was no evidence of driver impairment on the part of Iacona.
Maryland State Police troopers responded, and SHA was called to assist with traffic detail. On-scene assistance was provided by the Worcester County Sheriff's Department. The investigation continues.

Attorney: Cop Kills Teen Who Answered Door While Holding Nintendo Controller
Officer says she thought Wii controller was a firearm
A 17-year-old was killed by police knocking on his door after he opened it while holding a Nintendo controller, according to the attorney of the late teen’s family.
Christopher Roupe died inside his home in Euharlee, Ga. Friday night after being shot by an officer who was attempting to serve a probation violation warrant for his father.
The police officer told the Georgia Bureau of Investigation that Roupe pointed a gun at her when he opened the door, but the family’s attorney, Cole Law, recently told WSBTV that the teenager was actually holding a Nintendo Wii controller.

Hitchhiker Shot And Killed By Police [GRAPHIC CONTENT]
Two men traveling along state Route 159 near Calico Basin, about 20 miles from downtown Las Vegas witnessed and recorded an incident with police where a lone man walking down the road ended up getting killed after a brief altercation.
The video of the incident was take from one of the man’s cellphones and released to the Las Vegas Review Journal. It shows 20 year old D’Andre Berghardt Jr getting stopped by Bureau of Land Management rangers, only to be killed after they failed to subdue him.
It starts with Berghardt being held at gunpoint by the two rangers for a few minutes while onlookers in cars and on bicycles observe. You can’t hear what they’re saying to each other but the young man didn’t appear to be threatening them or showing malicious intent even though he remained on his feet.
After several minutes of holding him at gunpoint, one of the rangers sprayed Berghardt with pepper spray in the face which prompted him to remove his shirt and start rubbing where the spray contacted him.

DHS Contracted To Purchase 704 Million Rounds Of Ammo Over Next 4 Years: 2,500 Rounds Per Officer

INVESTIGATORS LAUNCH NEW STRATEGY TO PATROL ONLINE MARKETPLACE FOR STOLEN PROPERTY
(Pikesville, MD) – Maryland State Police property crime investigators launch a new strategy to patrol the online marketplace for stolen property.
Since the inception of RAPID, the Regional Automated Property Information Database, in 2009, law enforcement agencies statewide have recovered over $18 million dollars in stolen property. Using the innovative tool, equipped with over 11 million searchable records, police are now able to strategically search eBay, an online marketplace, in an effort to return more stolen property to the victims of property crime. Property includes jewelry, camera equipment, expensive electronic items, tools, lawn equipment, scrap and precious metals.
Maryland was the first state in the nation to create a central database for the transaction of this kind of data, which has proved successful in solving property crimes and a variety of other crimes. Although the RAPID database is managed by the Maryland State Police, it is the collaborative effort among all law enforcement agencies in the state which has resulted in more stolen property recovered, more arrests and more closed cases. The Maryland State Police RAPID team continually provides advanced training to allied law enforcement agencies.

Using the innovative tool, equipped with over 11 million searchable records, police are now able to strategically search eBay, an online marketplace, in an effort to return more stolen property to the victims of property crime. Property includes jewelry, camera equipment, expensive electronic items, tools, lawn equipment, scrap and precious metals.
Maryland was the first state in the nation to create a central database for the transaction of this kind of data, which has proved successful in solving property crimes and a variety of other crimes. Although the RAPID database is managed by the Maryland State Police, it is the collaborative effort among all law enforcement agencies in the state which has resulted in more stolen property recovered, more arrests and more closed cases. The Maryland State Police RAPID team continually provides advanced training to allied law enforcement agencies.

Only three years after purchasing the property and the house within it, county government officials, annoyed by the couple’s use of an ATV to drive to their property, are trying to to take the Barries’ home away.
The county claims that it is seizing the property through eminent domain in order to preserve open space, according to an Associate Press report. The Barries say they have no plans to develop the land at all, and even let hikers travel through their property. Open space “is all it’s ever been,” Andy Barrie said.

Mrs. Herold’s School
Back in 1916, a Mrs. Elizabeth L. Herold started a school of her own in Salisbury,Maryland. This was in an era when the county school system had already been established and education was offered to everyone for free. Mrs. Herold had different ideas. She was ahead of her time in starting a private “for pay” school. Now there are many options. Other women associated with the school were Ruth F. Slemons, Mary Waters Hall and Marjori P. Ruark as evidenced by the signatures on the graduation certificate.
Her private school offered grades from kindergarten through elementary and offered “high school preparation classes”. It was a private school and tuition was required of the attendees. The financial end of the school provided her with an income and insured that the students would get a better than average education. By the parents paying, they made sure they got their money’s worth and the children’s noses were certainly kept to the grindstone. Mrs. Herold had only the finest teachers. Bertha Adkins, a prominent Republican, taught there for a time. When the school closed down in the late 1940’s, she went on to become the Undersecretary of Health, Education and Welfare under President Eisenhower.
Many of Salisbury’s leading citizens passed through Mrs. Herold’s School. Some are still around to tell tales of their school days. When Mrs. Herold passed, it became a home again. Stanton Adkins, of E. S. Adkins, and his wife, Ellen, lived there when they were first married. They lived on the first floor and an apartment was made out of the second floor and rented. The house has since been restored to a single family residence. Mr. Adkins was related to Mrs. Herold on his mother’s side of the family.
One of the students was a local named Jack Elderdice. One day when he was in kindergarten, he showed up at his home farther up N. Division St. When his mother inquired why he was home he informed her that he had “excaped”. I’m sure he thought it was much more of an accomplishment than did his mother.

The political philosopher Edmund Burke once remarked that all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good folks to do nothing. A glaring example of the impending triumph of a constitutional evil that could be stopped by folks who have been largely silent is the tyranny coming from the White House. 1 Dead, Babies Ill From Listeria Linked To Cheese
One person has died and three newborns have become ill in an outbreak of listeria linked to Hispanic-style cheese.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that the death was in California. Seven additional illnesses were in Maryland.
All the Maryland victims had reported consuming soft or semi-soft Hispanic-style cheese that they purchased at different locations of the same grocery store chain. Listeria was later detected in a sample of cuajada en terron, or fresh cheese curd, purchased at that chain.
The CDC withheld the name of the grocery store, as they often do in investigations.

House Approves $1 Million For "Food Desert" Help
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A bill to make more fruits and vegetables available in "food deserts" is headed to the Senate after approval from the House of Delegates.
The bill would offer $1 million yearly to small businesses that agreed to sell Maryland-grown produce in areas lacking grocery stores. The House approved it 108-25 Friday, with some Republicans objecting on grounds that it needs more accountability measures. They hope to work with senators to modify it.
Gov. Martin O'Malley sponsored the bill by request from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. He allocated the $1 million in his budget proposal.

Missouri Senate Votes To Nullify Federal Gun Control, 23-10
A Missouri bill which seeks to nullify virtually every federal gun control measure on the books, “whether past, present or future,” passed the Senate Thursday. SB613 would ban the state from enforcing virtually all federal gun control measures, and includes criminal charges for federal agents attempting to violate the right to keep and bear arms in Missouri.
The measure passed 23-10.

During Monday’s hearing, legislators heard details of conflicting studies of how an increase would affect Maryland businesses. Several bills have been filed in the General Assembly with different provisions to raise the state’s minimum wage.
None Of The Top 10 Biggest Political Donors Are Republican
The Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) released its list of top all-time donors. It totaled contributions from 1989 to 2012 from PACs and individuals affiliated with the heavy hitter organizations.
CRP designated each of the heavy hitters as Democrat, Republican, or “on the fence,” meaning between 40 and 59 percent was donated to each party. In some cases, percentages did not add up to 100 due to third party donations.
None of the heavy hitters in the top 10 were Republican (three organizations in the top 10 were on the fence). A Republican-leaning organization did not make an appearance on the list until number 17.

The summary of the case states McDonald "due to his infatuation with a co-worker, used his position while in office to enter nolle prosequi dispositions for five traffic citations as personal favors to the co-worker, facilitated the co-worker taking leave to which she was not entitled, interfered with a criminal prosecution of the co-worker for embezzling funds from the State's Attorney's Office, and deleted protectively emails from the co-worker's former work computer after her termination."
