Arab World Loses Hope For Change Under Obama

Arabs' belief that U.S. President Barack Obama could deliver on promises for a “new beginning” have been dashed, an annual survey of public opinion in Middle Eastern countries shows.

The survey of Arab public opinion conducted by Shibley Telhami shows that positive views of President Obama have plummeted from 45 percent in 2009 to 20 percent today, with the negative views of him skyrocketing from 23 percent to 62 percent.

While Obama has been claiming that his “outstretched hand” approach will win the U.S. new friends in the Mideast, the poll suggests otherwise. Only 12 percent expressed favorable views of the United States, even lower than the 15 percent that the Bush administration got in its final year.

According to Middle East analyst Marc Lynch, writing in Foreign Policy Magazine, Arabs have “grown frustrated at Obama's perceived failure to deliver on the promise of the 'new beginning' outlined in Cairo and had begun to lose hope in his ability to meaningfully change American policies towards the region.”

This year’s poll surveyed close to 4,000 people in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Jordan, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates.

Only 16 percent declare that they are hopeful about administration policies, compared to 51 percent last year. Sixty-three percent declare themselves discouraged, up from 15 percent. On the other hand, there has been a significant drop in those with "very unfavorable" views of the United States – from 64% in 2008 to 47% today.

Nun's Death Rallies Anti-Illegal Immigration Forces

In Arizona, the shooting death of a rancher blew the lid off simmering anger over border security and helped solidify support for a tough new immigration law. A similar eruption threatens in Virginia following the death of a Catholic nun in a car accident involving a man in the country illegally and accused of drunken driving.

The Benedictine Sisters of Virginia tried to discourage using the death of Sister Denise Mosier as a "forum of the illegal immigration agenda" and pleaded for a focus on "Christ's command to forgive."

"The sisters' mission is peace and love," said Corey Stewart, chairman of Prince William County's Board of Supervisors. "My mission is law enforcement and the protection of public safety."


The sisters at the Bristow, Va., monastery have buried Mosier, who would have turned 67 on Aug. 26. Two other nuns injured in the crash, Charlotte Lange and Connie Ruth Lupton, have undergone surgery and remain in critical condition.

The man charged in the case, Carlos A. Martinelly Montano, 23, of Bolivia, had two prior drunken driving convictions, but was not required to serve any of his 30-day sentence for the first one. A Prince William County judge required Montano to serve only 20 days of his approximately one-year sentence on his second conviction.

Local officials turned him over to federal immigration enforcement officers after the second incident and after sentencing, but federal officers released him both times while he awaited hearings.

Montano is being held at the Prince William County Adult Detention Center, and the county's prosecutor is promising to ask a grand jury to consider charges that could put him in prison for 40 years.

Montano entered the U.S. illegally with his parents and siblings, his uncle Luis Ronald Montano told The Associated Press. He attended American schools in New Jersey and Virginia from third grade through high school. He is engaged and is the father of two boys, ages 1 and 2, who were born in Manassas, Va.
Prince William County, about 25 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., stepped up its immigration enforcement in 2007 amid explosive growth of its Hispanic and immigrant populations. Under Stewart's leadership, the county implemented a local policy requiring police to determine the immigration status of all people arrested on suspicion of violating state or local laws.

Stewart rushed back into the immigration debate after the Aug. 1 accident, firing off a statement that President Barack Obama, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and members of Congress "all have blood on their hands."

"What I'm hoping is that this situation, which because it involves a nun has drawn the nation's attention, can serve as a catalyst for change and force the administration to come clean about its catch-and-release policies," Stewart said. He also says that the tragedy illustrates the need for Virginia to toughen its drunken driving laws.

Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Press Releases

On August 8, 2010, a Worcester County Sheriff's Deputy stopped Todd Jeffery Simpson, 27 of Salisbury, Maryland for 101 mph in a 55 mph on Route 50 in West Ocean City. Upon speaking with Mr. Simpson, Deputies detected alcohol on his breath and field tests were given. Mr. Simpson was subsequently placed under arrest for Driving While Impaired. Mr. Simpson was released from custody pending a trial date.

On August 8, 2010 at 1:30 am, a Worcester County Sheriff's Deputy stopped Joseph William Pierce 4th, 34 of Forestville Md., on Rt. 50 at the Harry Kelly Bridge in West Ocean City, Maryland for speeding. Deputies detected alcohol on Piece's breath and field tests were given. Subsequently Mr. Pierce was charged with Driving While Impaired. Mr. Pierce was released pending a trial date.

On August 4, 2010, a Worcester County Deputy was on patrol in the area of Racetrack Road and Route 113 when he observed a passenger vehicle with a headlight out. The Deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle and the driver of the vehicle attempted to elude the Deputy. A pursuit ensued on Route 113 with speeds in excess of 80 mph. Additional units joined in the pursuit as it continued towards Delaware. The vehicle ran numerous stop signs on county roads and entered the state of Delaware. Selbyville Police Department assisted in the pursuit and the operator jumped out of the vehicle on Selbyville Road. After a brief foot chase, the operator was taken into custody. The operator, Bruce Dennis of Frankford, Del. Was with fleeing and eluding along with numerous other traffic charges in Maryland and was taken into custody by Delaware authorities for traffic related charges. Mr. Dennis was held at the Sussex Correctional Institute.

On August 6, 2010, a Worcester County Deputy was on patrol in the Oak Street area of Pocomoke City, Maryland. The Deputy observed a pedestrian standing in middle of the street and attempted to identify the individual. As the Deputy approached the individual, the suspect, later identified as Desmond Monte Marshall, began to walk away from the Deputy. When the Deputy approached Mr. Marshall and asked for his identification, Mr. Marshall became argumentative and refused to comply with Deputy’s request. As the Deputy attempted to prevent Mr. Marshall from running away, a struggle ensued and Mr. Marshall struck the Deputy in the chest. The Deputy was equipped with a Taser Device and the device was deployed on Mr. Marshall. Mr. Marshall was able to resist all efforts to take him into custody and a foot pursuit began. Mr. Marshall was subsequently caught again in the area of Bonneville Ave, where a second attempt with the Taser was utilized and Mr. Marshall was taken into custody. Mr. Marshall was charged with 2nd degree assault, escape, and disorderly conduct. Mr. Marshall was held without bond.

Incident At The Mall Yesterday

"Today I took one of our daughters to the Mall to get school clothes. We parked at Macy's, the side across from the Food Court. I parked the car and as we were walking to the doors I noticed a bumper sticker I liked and saw a woman standing with the front door open smoking. I commented on the sticker and she went on to tell me how she had 8 dogs and was trying to get rid of 3 of them. I told her that we already had 2 and that we weren't interested. That was the end of the conversation.

My daughter and I came out of the mall around 4:15 and noticed the car was still there. The dogs were angry and barking a lot. Of course they were, they were locked in a sweltering car for hours on end!!!

I called the police and reported her. Gave her license plate #, make and model of the car and where she was parked. The officer on the phone said that he would send someone as soon as they had someone to send. I didn't stay until the police got there because I was in a rush to get home. There were 2 other ladies that witnessed this too and they stayed and called Mall security.

Shortly after arriving home I got a call from an officer asking if I would come back up to the mall and talk to them. When I arrived back to the parking lot, I was asked a series of questions and noticed what looked like chaos. There were quite a few people around the car, 2 people sitting on the curb in hand cuffs and the looks on everyone's / the officers faces were sad. It was heart breaking to see and hear those poor dogs in their condition. It was HOT today! We were sweating just standing there talking and those poor dogs were locked in a car for hours upon hours! How cruel can one be? This is sickening to me and I hope that the owners get what they deserve!

An officer called me a while ago to update me. It was over 105 degrees in that car!!! They were left in there to dye in my eyes! This is just awful!!! I won't get into the detailed report that I got, but it's not pretty. Those poor dogs are suffering because of their owners stupidity!!!

I am happy that I could help, but saddened to hear that one of the dogs didn't make it. I just do not understand some people. It was a sad, sad situation...

I will be supined to court and will gladly go and testify against those MONSTERS!!!!!

A Letter To The Editor

Recently, candidates for state office were given the opportunity to interview with http://www.sbynews.blogspot.com/. Several questions addressed taxes. The responses were revealing.

Delegate Norm Conway, D-38B, and Mayor Gee Williams, a Democratic candidate for the district, are not in favor of seeing taxes lowered on Marylanders. They desire no change in the sales tax (recently raised by 20 percent), no change in the millionaire's tax (a recent income tax increase) and no change in Maryland's corporate taxes (highest in the region).

The liberal, progressive agenda believes in government. They believe government knows best. They approach taxes from the perspective that your take-home pay is what government allows you to keep. Kings and royals behave as such.

O'Malley's tax policies, supported by Conway and Williams, are abject failures. The millionaire's tax was supposed to produce hundreds of millions in additional revenue. It resulted in a loss of revenue as those affected merely voted with their feet.

Every sales tax increase in Maryland raises revenues only for Delaware and Virginia, yet this is lost on government bureaucrats who have seemingly no knowledge of free-market principles.

When cigarette tax revenues drop in Maryland, they believe it is because folks have stopped smoking and proclaim it a "victory," while sales increase in neighboring states. What folly.

The path to freedom and prosperity is paved with reduced government spending and lower taxes. The current tail on Maryland's kite is a lead ball and chain. She wants to soar -- let's cut her loose in November.

The question is understandable. Private college tuition and fees have risen 70 percent over the past decade, according to the College Board. That is more than twice the rate of inflation. Public college tuition and fees have doubled in the same timeframe.

But while college debt has proven a financial chokehold for some people, a four-year degree is still great insurance, especially in a tough job market: The unemployment rate for people with a bachelor’s degree or higher was 4.5 percent in July, compared to 10.1 percent for those with only a high school diploma.

Pocomoke City House Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a fire in Pocomoke City which displaced a family of seven (7). The fire was reported at 2PM at 6 Forth Street. Arriving firefighters found fire venting out of a bedroom window in the single story single family home.

The fire was quickly extinguished. The house was occupied at the time of the fire and all occupants escaped with no injuries. The tenant of the house is Maria Marshall and 5 of her 6 children ages, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 16 were home at the time of the fire. The house is owned by Dean Guy. The Red Cross has placed the family in a local motel. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Photo at Hawaii school doesn't line up with State Department info, registration

The release of two sets of State Department documents through a Freedom of Information Act request has given new life to the puzzle of how Barack Obama could have attended third grade in Hawaii, as claimed by a classmate, while he has stated he was living in Indonesia at the time.

The indication Obama attended third grade in 1969 at Noelani Elementary School in Honolulu comes from an old photograph made public by classmate Scott Inoue. The informal photo shows Obama and Inoue against a background of what appears to be Christmas drawings by schoolchildren posted on a classroom bulletin board.

"The photo shows Barack Obama's arm around me in the third grade at Noelani in 1969," Inoue told WND. "My mother wrote that inscription on the bottom of the photograph at the time the picture was taken."

The inscription reads: "Scott & Barry 3rd grade 1969."

Good Idea

By now, I suspect everyone is familiar with snopes.com and/or truthorfiction.com for determining whether information received via email is just that: true/false or fact/fiction. Both are excellent sites. Advice from snopes.com VERY IMPORTANT!!

1) Any time you see an email that says "forward this on to '10' (or however many) of your friends", "sign this petition", or "you'll get bad luck" or "you'll get good luck" or "you'll see something funny on your screen after you send it" or whatever --- it almost always has an email tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and emails of those folks you forward to. The host sender is getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get lists of 'active' email addresses to use in SPAM emails or sell to other spammers. Even when you get emails that demand you send the email on if you're not ashamed of God/Jesus --- that is email tracking, and they are playing on our conscience. These people don't care how they get your email addresses - just as long as they get them. Also, emails that talk about a missing child or a child with an incurable disease "how would you feel if that was your child" --- email tracking. Ignore them and don't participate!

2) Almost all emails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards. All it was, and all any of this type of email is, is a way to get names and 'cookie' tracking information for telemarketers and spammers -- to validate active email accounts for their own profitable purposes.

You can do your Friends and Family members a GREAT favor by sending this information to them. You will be providing a service to your friends. And you will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam emails in the future!

Do yourself a favor and STOP adding your name(s) to those types of listing regardless how inviting they might sound! Or make you feel guilty if you don't! It's all about getting email addresses and nothing more.

You may think you are supporting a GREAT cause, but you are NOT!

Instead, you will be getting tons of junk mail later and very possibly a virus attached! Plus, we are helping the spammers get rich! Let's not make it easy for them!

ALSO: Email petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress of any other organization - i.e. social security, etc. To be acceptable, petitions must have a "signed signature" and full address of the person signing the petition, so this is a waste of time and you are just helping the email trackers.

FLACCO LIFTS SHOREBIRDS TO WALK-OFF 2-1 WIN

Shorebirds Win Back-to-Back Games for First Time Since Mid-July

Salisbury, Md. – After being silenced through the first eight innings, the Shorebirds plated two runs in the ninth inning to walk away with a 2-1 win over the Lexington Legends in game three at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday. The last time the Shorebirds won back-to-back games was on July 16th and 17th.

The Legends scored first in the third inning. With Grant Hogue at second, Jiovanni Mier hit a line drive single to left field to give the Legends a 1-0 edge.

Neither team scored another run until the ninth inning. Gary Helmick drew a lead off walk. Then, Ty Kelly blasted a single into right field to advance Helmick to second. Kieron Pope was hit by a pitch to the load the bases. Two batters later, Mike Flacco rifled a single into right-center field to score both Helmick and Kelly to give the ‘Birds a walk off 2-1 win.

David Walters earned the win in two shutout innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out two.

The loss was pinned on Kirk Clark, who allowed the game-winning hit to Flacco.

Jesse Beal was scratched from his start before the game and Nick Haughian made his first start of the season. He allowed six hits and just one run in 4.1 innings. James Brandhorst tossed 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings in relief of Haughian.

The Shorebirds and Legends square off in game four of the series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Patrick Kantakevich makes the start for Delmarva.

Narrative: On the above listed date and time, the Worcester County Bureau of Investigation was called to assist the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an electrocution of a plumber who was working under a house trailer in Berlin. Further investigation revealed that the victim was doing housework for his father at 11909 Sinepuxent Road in Berlin, Maryland. At that time, investigators believe that the victim was electrocuted by a live wire underneath the trailer.

Emergency medical personnel attempted to resuscitate the victim on the way to hospital but had negative results. The victim was pronounced dead by the Medical Examiner at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Maryland. The victim was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to be completed later. Investigation is continuing.

Gutierrez: Republicans 'Attacking' Unborn With Citizenship Concerns

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), chairman of the Democratic Caucus Immigration Task Force, accused Republicans who want to study the 14th Amendment's birthright citizenship of "attacking" unborn children.

Appearing on CNN Friday, Gutierrez said talk of holding hearings on the amendment was an effort to "demonize children in the wombs of their mothers."

"These are the people that are for the sanctity of life," Gutierrez said. "And, yet, they're going to attack an unborn child and say, if that child is born, we will get rid of it from this country immediately."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told The Hill on Monday that Congress “ought to take a look at” changing the 14th Amendment, which gives the children of illegal immigrants a right to U.S. citizenship.

McConnell’s statement signals growing support within the GOP for the controversial idea, which has also recently been touted by Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

GOP Rep: Obama's 'In Deep Doo-Doo'

Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) said Friday that "a lot of people want to jump off" and follow Christina Romer out of the Obama administration.

"When you see a ship starting to sink, a lot of people want to jump off," the congressman said on Fox Business Network. "And she is one."

Romer, chairwoman of the president's council of economic advisers, announced Thursday that she was leaving Washington and returning to an economics teaching job at the University of California at Berkeley.

"This president is in deep doo-doo and I think a lot of people are saying, 'Hey, we've got to get out of here before we all look bad,'" Burton said.

Palestinian Authority Has Neither Desire Nor Ability To Finalize Agreement With Israel

While the Palestinians debate whether to enter direct negotiations with Israel, we would do well to again ask the following question: Are their peace intentions genuine?

The State of Israel had a golden opportunity to scrutinize the frankness of their intentions to finalize a future peace agreement during Operation Fortress in 2002. Security forces uncovered the most guarded secrets of Arafat and his men in the PLO’s Ramallah archive, which contained thousands of security and political documents of unprecedented quality.

However, one document was conspicuously absent; a document that could have shed genuine light on the Palestinian Authority’s attitude to a future peace deal with Israel.

In the few historical junctions where the Palestinian national movement was called upon to make a decision regarding a possible historic compromise with the Zionist movement, the Palestinian leadership’s reply was unequivocally firm and determined: There would be no compromise because we, the Arabs, view the entire territory as belonging to the Arab Palestinian people.

The passing years have turned Palestinian rejectionism into a sanctified notion, one which current-day Palestinians address with the kind of reverence reserved for things that are greater than life.

Those holding their breath ahead of Ramallah’s next moves should be aware of another important detail. Even the formulation of an agreed-upon Palestinian agenda is an impossible mission over there. The PA cannot close ranks even ahead of the possibility of make-believe direct talks.

What our troops did find in the PLO archive, in large quantities, were numerous documents showing that the Palestinians are drawing immense benefits from the transitional status of “being less than a state” – which explains why they fell in love with the “peace process.” A peace activist recently told me that he tried to voluntarily bring hundreds of donated computers to PA children. “How much do I get for mediating this?” wondered a senior Fatah figure asked to offer his assistance.

Over the years, the PA’s leadership adopted techniques and skills that enable it to fully exploit its situation to its economic benefit. This transitional political situation, a twilight-zone government facing no scrutiny, is a political heaven for them made up of bottomless barrels of money. Who needs an actual state that would get into trouble sooner or later and be declared a failed state?

US Cuts Funding For Israeli Defense Systems

The United States has cut funding for Israel’s defense systems, even though a one-time grant appears to have raised the aid allocation.

The 2011 budget approved by Congress for the Arrow 3 program totaled $108.8 million. This included a White House request for $50.8 million, combined with another $58 million tacked on by the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.

Last year’s allocation was considerably higher, the Globes business news service points out. The White House had budgeted $60 million, and Congress had added another $97.4 million, bringing the total appropriation for the program to $157.4 million.

A $205 million grant intended to fund a 10-unit battery of the Iron Dome system to protect Israel’s southern flank against short-range Kassam rocket attacks was announced by the White House in May, pushing up the total amount of defense aid received by the Jewish State.

The generous aid package, however, is predicted to be a one-time grant, while the Arrow 3 funding cuts may be permanent.

Washington Times: Obamas Live The High Life While America Suffers

The Obama family has been working hard to show their indifference to the plight of middle America. Whether it's the president's golfing fetish, private air transportation for family dog Bo to a Maine vacation, or Michelle Obama's taxpayer subsidized trip to the Spanish Riviera, the gulf between the White House leisure class and the American middle class has grown to unprecedented proportions.

Everyone is entitled to some R & R, though Mrs. Obama's jaunt is her eighth holiday this summer. Tone-deaf White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs defended vacation numero ocho by saying, "The first lady is on a private trip. She is a private citizen and is the mother of a daughter on a private trip. And I think I'd leave it at that." The Riviera Romp coincided with a dose of bad news on the economic front. The economy shed 131,000 jobs in July, and the unemployment rate remained stuck at 9.5 percent. This is a continuing source of embarrassment for the O Force because the White House promised the almost $900 billion stimulus package would cap unemployment at 8 percent. The rate of growth in U.S. gross domestic product has declined two quarters in a row.

Two-thirds of the way through what Vice President Joe Biden loudly billed as "Recovery Summer," the recovery is faltering and a majority of voters sees the administration as the problem, not the solution.

Christina Romer, stimulus architect and chairman of Mr. Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, is leaving her job to return to the ivory tower at Berkeley. That can be taken as an admission of defeat. Details continue to emerge of frivolousness in stimulus spending, such as a study of monkeys on crack and $1 billion to the FutureGen Alliance in tiny Mattoon, Ill., to work on a planned carbon-dioxide containment system.

The administration seems unconcerned about the perception that it's looting the public treasury and running up record amounts of debt, but the electorate has noticed. Mr. Obama's Gallup weekly approval rating has dipped to 45 percent, and key traditional voting blocs - independents, those with middle income, married, over 50 and those who attend church regularly - rate the president from 44 percent to 35 percent. The Democracy Corps poll revealed that voters prefer Republicans to Democrats on economic issues by a 13-point margin. And according to a July Quinnipiac University poll pitting Mr. Obama against an unnamed Republican challenger, if an election were held today, the president would be a private citizen just like his wife.

Unanimous Senate OKs $600M For Border

The Senate on Thursday voted to hire 1,000 more U.S. Border Patrol agents as part of a $600 million border-security bill, acting swiftly in the hours before they left to face constituents during their five-week summer vacation.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, who is spearheading his party's immigration-reform efforts, said the money shows Congress is committed to border security as a down payment on eventually legalizing illegal immigrants.

"I'm for comprehensive immigration reform. I think that's the way to go. And I'm continuing to work on it," Mr. Schumer said. "But we've always said we should do border security first. This is border security first."

The money would come from charging higher fees on worker visas for companies whose staffs are made up of mostly foreign workers.

Republicans, led by Sen. John McCain, had offered their own proposals, which would deploy more agents to the border and expand detention of illegal border crossers, but Mr. McCain said Mr. Schumer's bill was "a significant step forward."

President Obama's original budget request for the upcoming fiscal year actually called for cutting the number of Border Patrol agents, but facing pressure from Democrats and Republicans, he requested the $600 million in new spending, including the new agents. Mr. Obama has also begun to deploy up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the border to help in the interim, while the new agents are being hired.

Michelle Obama Criticized As "Modern-day Marie Antoinette" Over Spain Vacation

Andrea Tantaros has penned a scorching editorial for the New York Daily News deeming First Lady Michelle Obama a "modern-day Marie Antoinette" for her vacation in Spain with her daughter.

"The First Lady is spending the next few days in a five-star hotel on the chic Costa del Sol in southern Spain with 40 of her 'closest friends,'" Tantaros writes, pointing to a CNN report that Michelle Obama and her group are expected to occupy 60 to 70 rooms. "Not exactly what one would call cutting back in troubled times."

Tantaros goes on to criticize the first lady for traveling abroad instead of within the United States, something that would help the U.S. economy.

"Michelle Obama seems more like a modern-day Marie Antoinette - the French queen who spent extravagantly on clothes and jewels without a thought for her subjects' plight - than an average mother of two," she writes. "... I don't begrudge anyone rest and relaxation when they work hard. We all need downtime - the First Family included. It's the extravagance of Michelle Obama's trip and glitzy destination contrasted with President Obama's demonization of the rich that smacks of hypocrisy and perpetuates a disconnect between the country and its leaders."

According to the White House, Mrs. Obama is traveling with minimal staff and a small group of family friends for a mother daughter trip long in the works.

The FIrst Lady's press office referred to White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs' statement at the White House briefing yesterday that "the First Lady is on a private trip."

"She is a private citizen and is the mother of a daughter on a private trip," he said. "And I think I'd leave it at that."

'Mater Mania Tomato Festival Brings SoBo’s to the Table

‘Mater Mania, the annual celebration of locally grown, organic, and heirloom tomatoes, is set for Sunday, August 22 from 3-7 PM at Cedar Hill Marina & Park in Bivalve, Maryland.

Police Investigate Apparent Inmate Suicide

JESSUP, Md. (AP) - Howard County police are investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate at a county detention facility who was recently charged with sex abuse of a minor.

Forty-three-year-old Thomas Edward Brookhyser died Friday night at a local hospital. Bowie resident Brookhyser was found on the floor of his Howard County Central Booking cell around 7:30 p.m. Friday. Police say Brookhyser appeared to have hung himself by linking his shirt to a handicap bar near the cell's toilet.

According to police, the preliminary investigation shows correctional staff performed a suicide screening and did not see any indicators for suicide. They also say there does not appear to be any evidence of foul play at this time.

SHOREBIRDS BLAST LEGENDS 9-1 TO END LOSING STREAK

Largest Crowd of Season Flocks to Perdue Stadium

Salisbury, Md. – The Shorebirds exploded for eight runs between the sixth and eighth innings to sprint past the Lexington Legends, 9-1, in game two of the series from Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Saturday. The largest crowd of the season, 8,993, witnessed the drubbing. Kenny Moreland earned his seventh win with the Shorebirds and ninth overall (two with Frederick), which is the most in the Orioles farm system.

The Legends jumped out to an early lead in the first. Grant Hogue was hit by a pitch to open the game. Two batters later, Jimmy Paredes singled to advance Hogue to second. After a wild pitch moved Hogue to third, he scored on a ground out to first baseman Mike Flacco by Jake Goebbert.

The Shorebirds leveled the contest in the bottom of the first inning. T.J. Baxter was issued a lead off walk. He moved to second on a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Ty Kelly hit a sharp single to left field to score Baxter.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until the sixth inning. Gary Helmick reached on a hit-by-pitch. Then, Ty Kelly hit a sinking liner to left center that got behind the diving center fielder Hogue for a triple and an RBI. With Kelly at third, Kieron Pope hit a hard two hopper towards short to give the ‘Birds a 3-1 edge.

In the seventh, the Shorebirds exploded for four runs. Flacco drew a lead off walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then, on a grounder to short by Justin Dalles, Jiovanni Mier sailed the throw into the dugout to force in Flacco. Garabez Rosa followed with a single. With two aboard, Helmick hit a three-run homer to left field to vault the ‘Birds to a 7-1 lead. It was his first home run since April 14.

In the eighth, the Shorebirds tacked on two more runs. Pope singled to open the frame. Then, Carolus belted a two-run homer inside the foul pole in left field to lift the ‘Birds to a 9-1 lead. Carolus has three homers in his last four games.

Moreland earned the win in seven stellar innings. He allowed just two hits. The right-hander finished the seventh inning for a fourth time this season.

Left-hander Will Startup, who was promoted from Aberdeen, made his debut. He tossed two scoreless innings to close out the game.

The Shorebirds and Legends meet for game three of the series on Sunday night at 5:05 p.m.

Police Officer Indicted For Videotaping Teen Girl

NORTH LAUREL, Md. (AP) - A Laurel city police corporal has been indicted on charges that he secretly videotaped his girlfriend's teenage daughter in her bedroom.

Charging documents say 37-year-old Edward Charles Schmitt hid a video camera in the girl's bedroom closet and taped her from August 2009 to February 2010. He is also accused of photographing himself performing a lewd act

Schmitt is charged with one count of sexual abuse of a minor, two counts of visual surveillance and one count of camera surveillance.

Laurel police said in a statement Friday that Schmitt had been suspended since Howard County officers began investigating the case in May.

Last Tuesday & Wednesday, The Daily Times ran articles about high electricity costs. I commented on both. stating that people do have a choice as to who they buy their electricity from & that they can lock into a fixed supply rate that would save them money. I also emailed The Daily Times with the same information. Thursday morning, they call me to interview me about my information. Today, the ran an article "Utilities market to Shore households," quoting me ( http://www.delmarvanow.com/article/20100807/NEWS01/8070333/Utilities-market-to-Shore-households). I'm grateful that they ran the article but I find it odd that they didn't give my contact information so people wouldn't have to call long distance to Ellicot City (the location of Allied Power Services) to have questions answered.

Certainly, I could be wrong with my thinking. However, I just think that if you're going to print an article that offers options to help the community, then you should also include the information that provides the easiest way to have questions answered. I left 2 comments with the online article giving my contact information, but BOTH were deleted, with the statement that my comments "violated" their policy. I just don't get it.

At any rate, if people would like to contact me concerning the opportunity of saving on their electricity bill. They can do so at the information listed below. I market for Washington Gas & Energy Services. But they are a few other companies that have residential programs such as Constellation Energy, Dominion Power, etc. As I've stated before, people need to know this information, do the research themselves & then make an educated decision. The important thing is to know that you DO have a choice when it comes to your electricity supply.

Man Shot Behind Wheel In Arundel County

Anne Arundel County Police are investigating an incident in which a man was shot while behind the wheel of a vehicle, causing him to crash.

Last night at about 10:20 p.m., Severn, Md., resident Calvin Chi Man Yeung, 40, was shot in the chest while sitting at a traffic light. After he was shot, his vehicle passed through the intersection and over the southbound lanes of Telegraph Road and struck a support wall along the Route 100 overpass. Yeung was rushed to the Baltimore Washington Medical Center but died from injuries he sustained.

It is not clear at this time whether he died from the gunshot or the automobile crash.

Economy: As the "recovery summer" turns into a nightmare, one thing has become painfully clear: This is the most economically incompetent administration since the Great Depression.

Two years into the Obama era, when the U.S. should be enjoying a booming recovery from the 2007-08 meltdown, with millions of new jobs and higher incomes for all, all we see is economic wreckage from the unbelievably foolish policies pursued by the White House and the Democrat-controlled Congress.

Whether it's the $862 billion "stimulus" that turned into a welfare program for bankrupt states and public unions, or the $700 billion TARP program that became a giant dish of pork for Democrats and their supporters, or the job-killing duo of health care and financial reform, Obama, Pelosi, Reid et al. seem oblivious to the deep and lasting damage they're doing to America's economy.

Friday's frightening jobs report was only the latest in a series of releases indicating the "recovery" is faltering. Unemployment in July was unchanged at 9.5%, but a net 131,000 jobs were lost on top of 97,000 more than first accounted for in May and June.

"Recovery summer"? Time for another sobriquet.

The White House response? On Friday, after release of the jobs report, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis touted the economy's "turnaround" and credited "strong and immediate action" President Obama took after entering office. The only real problem, she hinted, was Republicans who refuse to support a $26 billion bailout for state and local governments and their pampered unions.

"There is no room for partisan roadblocks when Americans are depending on their government's action and the stakes are so high," Solis said. In this White House, economic recovery is always just one massive stimulus or bailout bill away.

Solis also repeated — with the stock market selling off 100 points as she spoke — the bogus claim made by the White House and uncritically parroted by its media pals that timely action "saved or created more than 2.5 million American jobs."

As we've said, this is utter nonsense. Completely made up. And, by the way, the official who made it up — Council of Economic Advisers chairwoman Christina Romer — quit on Friday to return to academia, her reputation for accuracy in tatters.

Here's the real record: America has lost 4.1 million jobs since Obama took office and 7.7 million since the recession began in December 2007. So most of the jobs lost have been under this administration. Whatever else you might call Obamanomics, "successful" isn't it.

Salisbury’s Bicentennial

Salisbury was in the middle of the Great Depression in 1932, as was the rest of the country. The only difference was that Salisbury and the entire Eastern Shore didn’t depend on the world “west of the Chesapeake Bay” as it does today. My grandmother once told me that she would never have known that the rest of the country was having hard times except for the fact that more tramps appeared at her back door asking for something to eat. The Eastern Shore had practically everything it needed, and there was work for anyone willing to go for it.

A lot of the money was provided by the “alphabet agencies” of FDR’s New Deal that was supposed to get the country out of the doldrums of the Depression. Salisbury benefited to the tune of a new City Park and the 300-ft.long concrete and steel dam on Johnson’s Lake.

It was during this time that Salisbury decided to pull out all the stops and celebrate their 200th birthday. The city had been founded on August 8, 1732. The whole week of August 7-13th was decided upon to have this grand celebration. You name it and they had it. Parades, band concerts, sporting events, competitions for the children, a carnival, stunt flying, exhibitions of historic relics, school exhibits, a circus, the official ceremonies, a Historical Pageant held in City Park that included 330 participants, and the grand lighting of the new “electric” fountain in City Park (the one across from Wicomico Middle School). It seems as if everyone in town was involved in some way. There were traffic and parking regulations clearly designated and posted so that everything went smoothly.

The mayor of Salisbury, England, J. S. Rambridge, was present to help its sister city celebrate their 200th birthday. Special medals were struck for the occasion and they are frequently encountered today. A few of them had a loop attached that allowed it to hang from a ribbon attached to a bar that declared that the wearer was a “guest”. I think these were for the visitors from England as the only one I have ever seen is the one I bought from someone in England.

The Queen of the Bicentennial was Carolyn Waller, daughter of local attorney G. W. D. Waller. Their home at the time was what the Poplar Hill Mansion is now. She presided over a parade that must have been truly spectacular. Besides the Queen’s float, there were floats from other towns on the Shore with a Princess presiding over each float. Cars carrying political and local dignitaries, marching units of firemen and policemen, bands and comic divisions were also included. There were also fourteen floats that portrayed the city of Salisbury as a place of happy and healthful living. The categories for these floats were Hospitality, Agriculture, Dairying, Industry, Merchandising, Transportation, Financial Strength, Health and Hygiene, Recreation, Sportsman’s Paradise, Religion, Education and Aesthetics (whatever that was). The parade started at the college and proceeded to wind through downtown Salisbury on a route that covered a full four miles in its entirety.

The “Relics House” was at 704 N. Division Street. The number has since been changed to 320 N. Division Street. It was described as “one of the oldest houses in Salisbury, considerably more than one hundred years old”. It is still there and has an historic plaque out front that describes it as “The Little House – 1790”. The house itself is set back a good 75 feet from the street, but the sign designating it as 320 is right on N. Division St. In the early days, Miss Elizabeth Roxburgh lived there. Her father was an aide to George Washington during the Revolutionary War. There were displays set up to show how the early settler operated a loom and a spinning wheel. The loom, built in 1825, was hewn out by the hand of an early patriot. It was operated by his grand-daughter. She was 76 years of age at the time of the Bicentennial. Some of the rooms had been furnished with furniture of an earlier period in Salisbury’s history.

Since this was the year the Wicomico Historical Society was formed, the relics were under the care and direction of the Wicomico Chapter of the Women’s Eastern Shore Society of Baltimore. This Society lasted until 2007 when attrition and age diminished their ranks. At that time, they equally distributed their treasury to the nine counties on the Eastern Shore to further their historical endeavors.

Two Men Arrested In Greenwood Home Invasion

Abel Murray, 22, of Greenwood, DE

Resume:

Greenwood - Delaware State Police have charged two men in connection with a home invasion.

The incident happened just after 7 p.m. when Rust and Murray allegedly entered the home of a 39 year-old female. The two were wearing disguises and one of the men was armed with a baseball bat. One of the suspects held the victim to the ground while the second one rummaged through the house and removed cash and approximately 140 pills of Oxycodone before fleeing. The suspects fled north on Sharps Mill Road. The victim attempted to follow the pair but was unable.

Troopers who responded to the scene found evidence linking Rust and Murray to the crime. Both men were taken into custody late last evening.

Ratifying U.N. Children’s Rights Treaty Would Turn Parental Rights ‘Over To International Community’

Sen. Jim DeMint (R- S.C.) said that if President Barack Obama gets his way and the Senate ratifies the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the precedent would be set to place parental rights under the jurisdiction of the international community.

“We believe we need to take clear action here in Congress to protect the rights of parents to raise their children," DeMint said at a Wednesday panel discussion. "This treaty would, in fact, establish a precedent that those rights have been given over to the international community."

DeMint is lead sponsor of S. Res. 519, a resolution to protect parental rights, which is co-sponsored by 30 senators total. Only four more senators need to sign on to inform President Obama that he does not have enough votes in the Senate to ratify the treaty, DeMint said.

DeMint has also introduced a joint resolution, proposing a constitutional amendment to protect parental rights.

Under Article 2, Section 2 of the U. S. Constitution, treaties must be approved by a two-thirds majority of the Senate for them to take effect.

The U.N. adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child on Nov. 20, 1989. By Sept. 2, 1990, 20 nations signed on to enforce the treaty. Currently, with the exception of the United States and Somalia, 193 nations have signed on to enforce it.

Nations that ratify U.N. treaties are bound to adhere to them by international law.

The convention established an 18-member panel to oversee children’s rights in nations that are part of the treaty. If approved by the Senate, the United States would fall under the jurisdiction of this panel.

DeMint said the threat to parental rights is “not some theoretical threat.”

He also said that ratification of the treaty would be “a terrible precedent” not just for parental rights, “but in other areas that we’ve looked at.”

“It submits our federal laws, our national laws to this treaty,” DeMint told CNSNews.com. “And the fact is that we don’t know exactly how it’s going to run, but we know how bureaucracy works. Once a precedent is established and we have yielded control, we know that it will continue to grow. So the precedent is almost worse than the immediate details.”

DeMint also said that the treaty is superfluous because there are laws already that safeguard abused children in the United States.

WOMAN FATALLY WOUNDED AFTER UNINVITED ENTRY INTO CECIL CO. HOME

(Elkton, MD) – Maryland State Police homicide investigators are continuing their investigation into the fatal shooting of a woman who entered a Cecil County home uninvited late last night and was fatally wounded after she apparently struggled with the homeowner who was holding her at gunpoint.

The deceased woman is identified as Jessica M. Hollada, 29, who had an address of the unit-block of Stony Chase Drive, Elkton, Md., but investigators learned she had recently been staying in the unit-block of Chestnut Drive, in a residence next door to where the shooting occurred. Her body has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.

At 12:45 a.m. today, Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators were contacted by the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office and requested to respond to the scene of a fatal shooting in the unit-block of Chestnut Drive, in Elkton. Cecil County deputies had responded to the report of a shooting at the residence at 11:00 p.m. yesterday.

The preliminary investigation indicates that shortly before 11:00 p.m. yesterday, Hollada knocked at the front door of the home where Chris Wilkins, 50, and his wife, Lisa Wilkins, 50, live with their four children. The members of the Wilkins family told police they did not know Hollada and had never seen her before.

The door was answered by the Wilkins’ 12-year-old son. Hollada reportedly pushed past the youth and entered the home uninvited, saying, “I can’t do this anymore.”
Startled, the youth ran upstairs to notify his parents. Mr. Wilkins retrieved his loaded .12 gauge shotgun and both parents came to the first floor, but could not find Hollada.

Mr. Wilkins reportedly went to the basement and found Hollada there, where he confronted her at gunpoint and ordered her to sit in a chair. Mr. Wilkins directed his wife to retrieve a handgun from a locked safe and she joined him in the basement. According to the investigation, Mr. Wilkins took the handgun from his wife and gave the shotgun to her, instructing his wife to hold it on the woman as he searched the basement for other persons.

According to Mrs. Wilkins, Hollada got off the chair, grabbed the barrel of the shotgun and put it in her mouth, while asking if she was going to shoot her. A struggle apparently ensued as Mrs. Wilkins tried to regain control of the weapon and the shotgun discharged, fatally wounding Hollada.

The family immediately contacted 911 and Cecil County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded, as did EMS personnel. Hollada was pronounced dead at the scene.

After obtaining a search warrant for the home where the shooting occurred, Maryland State Police homicide investigators and crime scene technicians have spent the day processing the scene. Each member of the Wilkins family was interviewed at the North East Barracks and has been allowed to leave.

Investigators are also interviewing individuals who saw Hollada last night. Several of them reported she was acting ‘strangely’ and they were concerned for her welfare.

A motive for Hollada’s actions last night has not been identified at this time.
Investigators learned Hollada had been recently staying in the basement of her aunt’s home, which is next door to where the shooting occurred. Her other address was about one-quarter mile away.

No charges have been placed in connection with this shooting. State Police homicide investigators are in contact with the Cecil County State’s Attorney’s Office and the investigative facts of this case will be presented for review and consultation regarding whether or not any charges will be filed.

The investigation is continuing.

Family Dog Shot, Killed While Eviction Notice Served

A Forest Heights, Md., woman's dog was killed while Prince George's County sheriff's deputies served an eviction notice.

The woman was behind on her rent, authorities said. Deputies knocked on her door Friday, announced their presence and entered.

One of the deputies said he was cornered by a Rottweiler and shot at it when it lunged at him.

The dog's owner was so upset she had to be hospitalized. Her sister said the dog was just protecting his family.

Wilmington - Delaware State Police have arrested a 15 year-old male teen for robbing a Claymont bank on Wednesday.

Troopers arrested the teen in the 200 block of South Harrison Street in Wilmington today. Investigators got a break in the case when a trooper assigned to Troop – 1, Penny Hill, recognized the teen from prior shoplifting investigations. Detectives conducted a photo array with the victim and witnesses and then obtained a warrant for the juvenile’s arrest.

He was charged with Robbery 1st and was committed to the New Castle County Juvenile Detention Center.

CITYHALL

City Council Meeting: The Fruitland City Council will meet in regular session on Tuesday evening, August 10, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. The usual staff meeting will held in the conference room at 7:00 p.m. to review the agenda with council members. A copy of the agenda and the unofficial minutes of the July 13 meeting are enclosed for council members’ review.

Sign Ordinance First Reading: A first reading of the new sign ordinance will be done on August 10, 2010. This will set new fees for business signs and spell out rules for use of other types of signs by individuals and nonprofit organizations.

Dog Ordinance First Reading: A revision of the Animal Control Ordinance #186 will be presented to Council on August 10, 2010. Our current Ordinance gives the responsibility of dealing with dog complaints to Wicomico County. Unfortunately the County has cut their enforcement arm in the Humane Society and has turned over dealing with these issues to the Sheriff’s Department.

Website and IT RFP: RFP’s for website maintenance and information technology services will be put out for bid in September. Currently the City is without formal contracts for these two important services. The RFP’s are currently under review by staff and the current provider will be advised next week.

Drug Testing: A final review of the drug testing policy for the City is underway and the implementation schedule will be formally announced to the employees in September and full implementation will begin in January.

ADP Payroll Processing: A productive meeting was held this week with representatives from ADP to work through some issues that have arisen in the implementation of our changeover in outsourcing our payroll. An on-going evaluation is in process on the cost benefits of this system.

Credit/Debit Cards at City Hall: We continue to work with GovPay on the installation of a CC/Debit Card system and our goal is to have the system in place in October. We are consulting with other jurisdictions using the same system. The system will have no ongoing cost to the City except minor initial IT upgrades.

Real Estate Tax Bills: Property tax bills have been processed and will be mailed at the beginning of next week.

POLICE

Our “National Night Out” block party held on Tuesday (3rd) was very successful. We had the largest turnout since the beginning of the event three years ago. A huge “thank you” to Cooper Townsend and his staff, all the local businesses, civic organizations and individuals for their donations and time rendered preceding and during the event.

PUBLIC UTILITIES

Installation of an 8- inch isolation valve was completed on School Street to minimize water service outage to the Fruitland Intermediate School by field service staff.

Field service staff installed a new water service at the new Fruitland Falcons Concession Building on South Brown Street this week. A new sanitary sewer service will be installed within the next couple of weeks.

Water meter reading for courtesy leak notification was performed this week. A total of 206 (9.8%) accounts of the 2,097 read, were identified as having a potential leakage problem. Property owner notification should be completed by early next week.

Staff performed a demonstration “point repair” on a defective 8-inch sanitary sewer main line located on Jefferson Street. This work is part of the overall Infiltration and Inflow reduction program the City has undertaken to alleviate leakage within the sanitary sewer system.

LEGENDS HOLD OFF SHOREBIRDS FOR 9-6 GAME ONE WIN

Carolus and Rosa Both Homer In Losing Effort

Salisbury, Md. – The Lexington Legends plated seven runs in the first four innings to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds 9-6 in game one at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday night. The Shorebirds have lost seven straight games and 11 of their last 12 games.

The Legends jumped to an early lead in the first inning. After consecutive singles by Jiovanni Mier and Jake Goebbert, Kody Hinze walked to load the bases. Then, Brent Allar issued a walk to Jonathan Meyer to force in Mier. The next batter, Miguel Arrendell singled home Goebbert to make it 2-0. Rene Garcia followed with another single to lift the Legends to a 3-0 lead.

The Shorebirds responded with three of their own in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, courtesy of two walks and an error, Mike Flacco ripped a two-run single into left field to score Omar Casamayor and Ty Kelly. Legends starter Juan Minaya walked two more batters to force home the third run.

In the second, the Legends regained the lead. Grant Hogue drew a lead off walk and Jimmy Paredes belted a two-run homer to give Lexington a 5-3 edge. The Legends added a third run in the second on a wild pitch by Allar that scored Goebbert.

The Shorebirds drew within one in the third inning. Flacco was hit by a pitch to start the third. Two batters later, Garabez Rosa hit a two-run homer over the left-center field wall to cut the deficit to 6-5. It was his third homer of the season.

The Legends added one more in the fourth on an RBI single by Jonathan Meyer and two more in the eighth on a two-run homer to right field by Jake Goebbert.

The ‘Birds tacked on just one more run. Levi Carolus led off the seventh inning with a solo homer to left field.

Lexington reliever Brenden Stines earned the win in 3.0 innings. He allowed two hits and a run. Shorebirds starter Allar was pinned with the loss in 1.2 innings. He allowed five hits and six runs.

Brian Parker pitched admirably for Delmarva. In a season high 5.1 innings of relief, he allowed five hits and a run. Parker retired the final ten batters he faced.

The Shorebirds and Legends square off for game two of the series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Kenny Moreland makes the start for Delmarva.

Narrative: On 4 August 2010 at 1:55 AM, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported fight in progress between two individuals in the 1900 block of Pine Way in Salisbury. Upon arrival, the deputy learned that the fight stemmed from an argument over ownership of a puppy. One of the individuals involved in the fight, Preston Shockley, confronted another man and demanded back the puppy that Shockley had given to him. When this other individual refused, Shockley allegedly became belligerent and began throwing rocks at this individual. Shockley then struck this individual in the torso before letting a pit bull loose which then bit the victim in the ankle.

The victim in this case managed to get away from Shockley and call the Sheriff’s Office. Upon the arrival of the deputies, Shockley was gone from the scene so a warrant was obtained for his arrest and he was taken into custody later in the day on 4 August. Shockley was transported to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of a District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, the Commissioner detained Shockley in the Detention Center in lieu of $5,000.00 bond.

Narrative: On 4 August 2010 at 2:47 AM, a deputy was on Pine Way interviewing individuals for an assault that had been reported earlier when the deputy was speaking with Michael C. Moore. During the encounter, Moore identified himself as Kevin C. Moore. The deputy began to doubt the veracity of the information provided by Moore who eventually provided his true identity of Michael C. Moore. The deputy then discovered that Moore was wanted on an outstanding Wicomico County Circuit Court bench Warrant, which gave Moore reason to lie about his identity.

The deputy placed Moore under arrest for the warrant and providing a false identity. Moore was transported to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, Moore was detained in the Detention Center by the Commissioner in lieu of $3,000.00 bond.

Upon arrival, the deputy learned that a male subject was involved in an argument with Jessica Morris of Salisbury when Morris allegedly pulled a knife from her purse and approached the male and what was described as a threatening manner. The deputy recovered the knife from Morris that was used in the incident described by the victim.

The deputy placed Morris under arrest and transported her to the Central Booking Unit where she was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, the Commissioner detained Morris in the Detention Center in lieu of $10,000.00 bond.

Narrative: On 4 August 2010 at 7:39 PM, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 5300 block of Sixty Foot Road for a reported altercation that had occurred inside a residence. Upon arrival, the deputy learned that Randy Campbell had arrived at the residence and confronted his juvenile son. The ensuing confrontation turned physical when resulted in the son displaying signs of injury that were inflicted by Randy Campbell. Campbell allegedly also made statements during the altercation that he intended to burn down the house that his son was in with everyone inside.

The deputy placed Campbell under arrest and transported him to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner, After an initial appearance, the Commissioner detained Campbell in the Detention Center in lieu of $10,000.00 bond.

Two Men Arrested For Robbery After Injuring A Female Victim

Resume:

Milford - Delaware State Police State Troopers have arrested two men for taking money and then seriously injuring a woman during a robbery at her residence early Sunday morning.

This incident occurred when the 23 year-old victim befriended the two suspects, Veach and Johnson, and the trio arrived at the victim’s home. While they were at the residence of the victim, she went up stairs for a brief period of time. When she came back down she discovered money missing from her purse. Veach denied taking the money after the victim confronted him. The victim noticed that Johnson was outside and confronted him. An altercation ensued between Johnson and the victim.

During the altercation between the two Veach entered a black vehicle and began to back out on Shawnee Road. As Veach was backing out Johnson entered the passenger side of the car. The victim was able to open the rear passenger side door in an attempt to get in the car to retrieve her money. Veach quickly accelerated causing the victim to fall out of the car to the ground prior to the pair fleeing.

The victim was able to get to a neighbor’s house where emergency responders transported her to Milford Memorial Hospital. Her injuries were so severe she was flown to Christiana Hospital near Newark. She was admitted with a severe contusion to her entire left side, brain bleed, and loss of vision in her left eye.

During the investigation troopers learned that the three were in the Harrington Raceway and Casino. Troopers assigned to the Division of Gaming Enforcement were able to obtain video that assisted in identifying the suspects

On Thursday August 5, 2010, troopers arrested Veach at his home and charged him with Assault 2nd and Reckless Endangering 1st. He was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institute in lieu of $7,000 bail.

Today, August 6, 2010 Troopers arrested Johnson at his home in Harrington. He was taken back to Sussex County and charged with Robbery 1st and Conspiracy 2nd. He was also committed to the Sussex Correctional Institute in default of $11,000 bail. The State Attorney General’s Office will look at amending Veach’s charges to Robbery and Conspiracy during a Grand Jury hearing.

Troopers did recover evidence implicating the two in the robbery.
