Andy Harris Visits The Blessing Of The Combines

Hey Joe...

Just wanted to share with you an Andy Harris spotting on the Eastern Shore (again!) I'm sorry the email is a bit late, as the Blessing of the Combines in Snow Hill was August 2nd. Anyway... Andy rode in on a combine waiving to the crowd and showing his support for this community event.

The event was a great success - as always - and a good time was had by all. There was also a combine decorated with Kratovil signs, but unlike the Harris combine, it was locked when the time came to explore these GIANT beasts.

If you've never been, this event is unlike any other. My family has been attending for several years - even adjusting vacation time to make sure we don't miss it. It is extremely well organized, tons to do, plenty of free kids activities and just an overall fun time. Kudos to EVERYONE involved.

Zoo Veterinarian Nolte Part 1

If you want to find out about disciplinary actions taken against a Maryland Veterinarian you first have to send the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners a letter asking for the information. Through the Freedom of Information Act you can find out just what kind of problems there might be with a veterinarian and the animals they have had in their care.

I recently received a packet about Dr. Doug Nolte. It contains three consent agreements. The first two are concerning two cats that were sent in for routine care. The first case was about a year old cat that was sent in for routine shots and neutering. The cat was dropped off at Nolte's office on the morning of August 11, 2005. The owner retrieved the cat at 5:15pm that day. When the receptionist brought the cat out in its carrier, the owner noted the cat was laying flat on the bottom of the carrier and the owner asked if the cat was still sedated. The receptionist said the cat would be okay by the next day. "Dr. Nolte was not present and, for this reason, did not and could not examine 'the cat' to assess whether he had sufficiently recovered from the effects of the anesthetic agents". That evening the owner after seeing the cat looked worse, his gums were white and he was barley breathing, she takes the cat to Pet's E.R. where Dr. Drewer notes, "General appearance: quiet and lethargic, minimally responsive"; Musculoskeletal: cannot walk - even sit or lay sternally"; "Neuralgic: very depressed and stuporous." When Dr. Drewer tries to take the cats temperatureit was "too low to read on the thermometer." The cat is slowly warmed up and can be roused with a lot of effort by morning. The cat is then sent to Salisbury Animal Hospital where Dr. Hudson notes that it was "laterally recumbent and depressed." The cat had developed bradycardia (abnormally slow heartbeat). By the late afternoon the cat was able to stand on his own but was still not normal and was sent again to Pets E.R. so they could monitor it's condition. By the next morning the cat was sent home. In this case the Conclusion of Law was that patient information was not noted, weight, body condition temperature, pulse, respiration and submitted an undated record stating that he had used Ketamine and Xylazine on the cat instead of the more typical Isoflurine gas. He failed to monitor the cat post surgically and that " Dr. Nolte's treatment of this animal did not conform to the minimal standards of care". Dr. Nolte was fined $900, his license was suspended for 2 weeks but the suspension was stayed and that he was placed on 6 months probation.

The second case was about a cat that was declawed on March 13, 2006 by Dr. Nolte. On September 30 the owner sent the cat to the Annapolis Cat Hospital with an infected left front paw. After Dr. Maxson examined the cat, it was noted a "purulent (pus like) debris with a possible fistula at D3 and regrowth of the nail at D2. Dr. Maxson ordered radiographers, which showed that Dr. Nolte had removed little, if any, of P3". The conclusion of law determined that Dr Nolte basically didn't keep any notes on the patient's information, weight,body condition,temperature, and also failed to record any information about the anesthetic agent used, nor did he create a "log" of the procedure. He was fined $668.50 to cover the expense of the subsequent veterinary procedures, his license was suspended for two weeks but the suspension was stayed, and he was put on probation for 6 months.

Fast forward to March 27th 2008 when "Peggy Morgan, an inspector with the Board discovered that the hospital's narcotics were stored in an autoclave when she opened it". A major no-no with any Animal Hospital or Zoo. He was then fined $250.

What can you take from this information? Dr. Nolte obviously has a problem remembering to write down pertinent information relating to his patients. He also doesn't seem to good at handling normal veterinary procedures on felines. He also doesn't keep his drugs under double lock and key. Would you want to use him as your vet? Should the Zoo use him on their animals? All I can say is I'm glad I'm not a Bobcat or Ocelot at the Salisbury Zoo.

You draw your own conclusion. I should add, Dr. Nolte was terminated/fired from the Salisbury Zoo years ago and also worked at the Humane Society.

Man Talking On Cell Phone While Fueling Sam's

Many Gas Stations have signs instructing you NOT to use your cell phone while pumping gas. I do believe Myth Busters proved this to be false, a cell phone won't spark/ignite gas but nevertheless, Sam's Club, (where these photos were taken) does have signs telling you NOT to use your cell phone.

As a result of the altercation, both subjects forced each other onto the roadway, injuring each other. The injuries were minor, and both suspects were treated and released from the Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

Best Buy warranty a ripoff?

Many of you may remember two weeks ago I posted my experience with Best Buy's warranty on my computer. In a nutshell my computer failed and I took it to Best Buy which is the store from which it was purchased. The mgf's. warranty had expired but I had purchased an extended warranty. The Geek Squad guy told me that it was a RAM issue and that it would have to be sent to Kentucky. He also told me that it would NOT be necessary to back up my hard drive. Two weeks later I picked up my "repaired" computer to find out that the hard drive had been replaced and that they had not recovered my important data from the old one. They told me that they still had my old hard drive and that they would recover my data - for $260.00 for the first 9 megs and the cost would go up from there. They refused to return my old hard drive and gave me no recourse. I posted something here about it and shortly thereafter I spoke with a manager who stated that he would see what he could do.

OK - about two days later I got a call from someone from Kentucky who stated that someone from the Salisbury store had contacted him and advised him of all the negative comments in response to the post - particularly the one by Mike Ash that referred everyone to Ripoff.com. This person advised that they were trying to keep customers satisfied as well as avoid anymore negative information reaching the public. They sent me my hard drive back - overnight - at no cost to me.

This is the best part. I collected my PCU, my old hard drive, and my disks, and took them to Brainwave Computers. As they tried to recover data from the old hard drive they ran some routine tests to determine what data was good, etc. Guess what? There was nothing wrong with the friggin original hard drive! Brainwave made a mirror image of my old hard drive on the new one and gave it to me in case the other ever did go bad. I would be back in action in less than an hour rather than five weeks. They upgraded my ram, tested the entire system, installed another program (one that I had just purchased), and cleaned up my system for under $200.00.

Exactly what game is the "Geek Squad" trying to run on folks who buy the extended warranty. It is a scam. Best Buy - You're making quite a reputation for yourselves!

Brainwave has got it goin' on!

WBOC Beats WMDT To Digital Broadcasting, But At What Price?

While it is true that WBOC will broadcast first in digital format, the price tag is a hefts one. GO HERE for their official article.

"WBOC is set to broadcast Delmarva's first and only local high definition television newscast! WBOC's HD newscasts will originate from a spectacular $13 million digital broadcast operations complex called the NewsPlex."

Well, for starters, they went $1,000,000.00 over budget. Then, no sooner did they think they were finished they started practicing on the studio and came to realize they had made another huge mistake. They had put in all hard wood floors and the sound started echoing everywhere. They went back to the drawing board and since they didn't want to remove the hard wood floors, they spend another $35,000.00 attempting to sound proof the studio and guess what, it failed.

So you may start listening to their broadcast and recognize an echo for a while until they get that under control. The next time WBOC wants to get it right the first go around they should hire Mayor Barrie Tilghman, an expert at soundproofing her Office so no one can listen in. Can you say, paranoia?

In the long run, the people paying for this multi million dollar complex will be the advertisers. What does that mean? That means they too will have to jack up their prices in order to afford the commercials and in the end YOU will be paying for such mentioned luxuries. Oh, and you'll have to go out and buy converters just to watch their shows.

The alternative? Salisbury News, where everything is FREE! Besides, they do nothing but steal many of my stories anyway. Oh, if you think I'm just saying that to be sarcastic, I'm NOT! You have no idea how many times I put up a story about someone or something and the person involved in the story calls me 5 minutes after I post it and WBOC tells them they just read it on Salisbury News. Like I've said in the past. The MSM wants to sue Bloggers any time they use their material. How about the MSM paying Bloggers for all out work?

My name is Mr. Larson. You know, the family Barrie Tilghman made famous here in Salisbury.

Well, ever since we moved to this City, things have changed for the worse ever since. We've been robbed 15 times and each time we've called the police they hung up on us.

Yes, that was my wife in one of those pictures you took in front of the Thrift Travel Inn. We don't like it but it has become a necessity in order for us to survive.

Well, anyway, the other night she was arrested because ever since you put up the articles about prostitution she has been kicked out of her room, yes, with John, she has had a very difficult time making ends meet.

Our son was hit in the head by a 2x6 a few months ago when the SU La Cross students went on that rampage and well, you guessed it, we have no health insurance. I mentioned something to the Mayor and quite frankly we got into a heated discussion and the next thing you know we've been slammed with violations on the home the Mayor got us special grants on. I called Louise Smith and she said she'd get back to me on that but we've never received a call back?

The all American city people called me today about verifying the City's application and I told them, well, you only need to guess what I said.

So since your readers are so giving, please have them call 1-900-SAL-BURY as we can only operate out of our home any more, however long that lasts. We need money too so can you help us too? By the way, we love your Blog!

If This Doesn't Draw 200+ Comments, I Don't Know What Will!

The following was a message sent to me not long ago. Of course I have my own thoughts about it and considered replying to this e-mail with such but instead decided to let each and every one of you have at it.

"I am wondering if you can help. I am one of those people who is a middle class, hardworking nurse. I am trying to sell my home. I had it on the market myself, and am getting ready to list with a realtor now, which means a hefty share of the proceeds from my pocket into theirs. Anyway, I found a lot I am interested in, but to secure the loan (down payment, closing costs and payments)—would mean depleting our savings-- and our budget would be shot-until the house sells—however long that will take. This lot would be our dream retirement home lot. We plan to put aprox. 2000 sq. foot home on it in the future. The lot is $150,000. Is there anyone out there who might be interested in helping us? I know it is a long shot, but one never knows unless they ask. Thanx."

A Comment On The Humane Society & More......

I would like to leave my comments on the agency in discussion. I have not had a pleasant experience with this agency since I moved here in 1976. Originally living in Montgomery County where the humane society had served me and my family very well.
When first living here in the 70's I quickly discovered that the same humane society I had known all my life wasn't living here in Wicomico County and it still isn't.

Granted some ordinances may be different but I do not think they are many in number. You can still have unspayed or un-neutered animals at large in your yard. Not all animals do remain in the yard though, especially when still "intact." Such as some folks who live in the Sharptown area. Nice looking place to live, till you try to walk about the town with your dog leashed. You will be met by several loose barking dogs as you do your very best to remain within the guides of our ordinances concerning pet owner ship.

The sheriffs department does nothing, the animal control officers do nothing. They don't say they do nothing. They say they do this and that but the problem still persists and I see that the officers visit the homes frequently of the perpetrators or owners of ill mannered dogs. Ooops, one of the ill mannered dogs is the officers personal pet...my bad.

I feel very badly for the people who have actually lost their dog for good. The agency's cheap, lousy excuse is a fairly good representation of all the things I have witnessed through the years of trying to deal with the Wicomico County's animal/humanity/society. A enormous lack of professionalism for the start. In applying for a receptionist's position after having been a professional receptionist for years, I discovered that nepotism was the key to holding a position there. But that was a completely different clique then the existing one today. Errr, excuse me, staff.

Now the building and grounds are lovely no doubt, Wicomico is very good at coverings for dirty places. Like the Campbell soup building and the waterfront, both lovely places waiting, waiting, waiting for their coverings. The old bus depot waited a very, very long time for it's new covering. But Wicomico was up in neighborhoods chasing landlords for cracked windows and loose bricks in folks' homes.
I am totally digressing, again, my bad.

I had a lovely dog that I adopted from the newspaper. He was a stunning specimen of an Akita. He was not yet fixed when he became mine and did run away by jumping out the second story window of my in-town home. We'd had him for three days He was picked up and not released to me. I was supposed to get a talking to by an officer who was not available. Uh huh.

I had to call the president of the board of directors to make them release my dog to me. And no one ever said anything when I picked him up except; the girl who had to give him to me tried to scold me on the upkeep of this dog I just adopted. She told me I wasn't grooming him properly nor caring for his needs.

I saw her fawning all over my supposed vicious breed dog, and suspected that the only reason that my dog could not be released to me was that the employee wanted to keep my gorgeous dog for herself. She was making it more and more evident as each second ticked by. It was quite an ordeal for me and for the dog.
I managed to keep a calm and took my dog home. I kid you not, if I had not been working for the husband of this important cog in the wheel of the wagon at the time, I would never have seen my lovely Timber again. I did have him "fixed" by a reputable vet and he lived to be a glorious 18 year old companion. The best I ever had or suspect will have.

But no thanks to Wicomico Humane Society. I would never, ever deal with them again. Except, I have to;

The dogs out in Sharptown are totally out of controll. And now Sharptown has adopted the ordinance stating dogs to be leashed or controlled by voice command. Unless a family is too lazy to do that they put the collars on them. So I have to still listen to the incessant barking as people and cars or birds go by! Thanks Sharptown, thanks Wicomico County, especially to the Sheriff's department. Deputies riding in Air conditioned cars way faster than the speed limit that's posted...and driving up meridians on the way to Mickey "D's" Yeah, I saw you talking on your cell phone driving erradically.

I decided to stop by Sam's this morning to fill up my pickup truck almost on empty. Considering I choose Sam's for ALL of my vehicles, it's a wise choice and the pictures do NOT lie. On August 4, 2008 at approximately 4:18 pm, Officers of the Salisbury Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for traffic violations in the area of Northwood Drive. The below listed suspect was a passenger in the vehicle. The officer observed that the driver and passenger became nervous and requested a K-9 check of the vehicle for possible controlled dangerous substances. A K-9 from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Department responded and gave a positive response to the vehicle. The vehicle was checked and a quantity of suspected heroin was located in the vehicle, and suspected cds/paraphernalia was located on the suspect’s person.

Salisbury Councilwoman Terry Cohen's appearance on this morning's Bill Reddish show was stellar. Besides the normal discussion of city business, Cohen brought up a subject that will be impacting Salisbury taxpayers for years to come:

Jeremy Gordy Booted Out Of The Bullpen

It was a BIG weekend on Assateague Island as many members of the AMSA get together once a year and enjoy a weekend on the Beach.

However, this year things took quite the twist for Mr. Gordy. Aparently while Mr. Gordy was in the Bullpen area, someone allegedy tipped them off that Mr. Gordy had not paid his dues and was no longer a Member and after the first night, they booted him out of there and sent him packing.

Sadly, this left Salisbury News without any wild pictures because the boy simply wasn't anywhere to be found and allegedly left in a rage. What goes around, comes around.

I'll tell you who was there and extremely well received though, ANDY HARRIS. Way to go Andy!

Housing project turned down

Cannery Village to seek other funds

BERIN -- Cannery Village, a work force housing development set to be built in Berlin, hit a major setback recently when its application for a $600,000 infrastructure grant was denied.

"It's bad news," said Don Bibb of the Housing Commission of Talbot County, one of the forces behind the project. "It means we have to find an alternative source for those funds. We've requested a meeting with the state to see what options we have."

Bibb was counting on the funds from the grant to pay for the project's infrastructure, which has to come before any of the project's afffordable homes can be built. Bibb said that numerous other grants associated with the project were time sensitive and could be affected by the denial of the CDBG grant application.

"Unfortunately, bureacracy doesn't always give you the results you want," Bibb said. "But my agency and Frank Gunion's agency (the Berlin Community Development Corporation) are committed to making this happen. If we have to bang on doors, that's what we'll do."

Bubba Sighting A Year Ago

While the construction was going on last year at the new Fire Station, Gary Comegys was regularly seen visiting the site to see how things were going. Of course, he was on the SHA's time but hey, it can't hurt if they don't know, right?

You have to ask yourself, what will he do with his regular job, retire? Is he actually considering doing both jobs? I mean, Mayor Tilghman says it's a full time position, right?

When it comes election time, let's see how stupid the citizens of Salisbury actually are? Oh, remember, we'll be able to tell just how stupid they are by the vote count, no matter how bad he loses too.

Stupid, Uncalled For Comments

I mention John Robinson in one Post and the next thing I know I've got more ridiculous comments, racial comments, curse words and just flat out stupid childish junk flying on here like there's no tomorrow.

The SU Post I put up has also brought in ridiculous comments as well. If you can't stay on topic, if you use curse words, if you simply make a stupid and or racial comment, it's NOT going up.

In the mean time, if I see comments that aren't on topic and you're not John Robinson, don't get too ticked off because I deleted/rejected it. This is not a place for children. I've let the last ones through. Keep it decent or it's not going up and that goes for you too Crugly. Take the foul language somewhere else because it's not getting posted.

I just received a call from Buzzy Bayles in OC Emergency Services. A tractor trailer swerved to avoid a car who cut him off and the tractor trailer went over the eastbound Bay Bridge, taking out a small section of the railing. MD Dept of Transportation announced the Eastbound lanes will be closed today. Traffic will be only on the westbound portion of the Bay Bridge; 2 lanes westbound and 1 lane eastbound.

A SU Student Speaks Out About The Salisbury Police Department

Dear Joe,

First I'd like to thank you for spending so much time on Salisbury News. I
stumbled onto the site about 3 or 4 months ago and I read it regularly. The
Daily Times is on the same level as the school newspaper in terms of quality of
writing, reporting, and relevancy, and it costs money! So thank you for the
blog.

Anyway, I just wanted to share with you a couple of anecdotes about the SPD.

In my freshman year of college my friend got busted for pot. He had, oh, I
don't know, 1.5 grams left from an 1/8 (3.5 grams) he had bought a week prior.
I know this for an absolute fact. But when it got to the station it weighed in
at just under 5 grams and he was charged with intent to distribute. The SPD
lied on the report so that they could charge him with a worse crime. It's not
like he had any baggies, or even a scale.

In my sophomore year another friend of mine was unfortunate enough to get a DUI.
The police officer that busted him was kind enough to drive him to the station
and back at around 100 miles per hour. Now this is hear-say but I do believe my
friend, and what happened next I witnessed in person. The officer dropped my
friend off on Dogwood Avenue, proceeded to speed through the parking lot to turn
around, and then PEELED OUT and sped away. This was actually a young MD State
Police Officer and not SPD but it is all symptomatic of the same condition.

In my junior year two friends of mine had their houses illegally broken into by
the SPD where numerous SU students were maced, pepper bombed, and otherwise
assaulted (and I mean literally beaten and bloodied). One of these cases was
actually mentioned on your blog (Salisbury University Students Reach Out).
Guys, we're college students, we don't have weapons and while we may want to
avoid arrest, we aren't going to try to resist arrest in the face of an officer,
much less a SWAT team.

Now, I was reading on your blog about the murders this summer and I couldn't
help but think where I was on July 28th. I know I went to a small birthday
party around that time which got busted for loud noise. I left about an hour
afterwards, but the cops that busted us (3 police in 3 cars) were STILL HANGING
AROUND OUTSIDE. And I couldn't help but think that the police find out about a
murder or a rape about once a week (www.salisburypd.com), so what are these
three officers hoping to accomplish? Are they hoping to bust YET MORE COLLEGE
STUDENTS?

I tried to look up the crime statistics for the years before the current police
chief was appointed, and surprise surprise, they aren't available. But I would
be willing to bet that there is a negative correlation between the ratio of
pot/alcohol busts and real crimes. In other words, as more college students are
getting busted for cannabis and alcohol, more real criminals are committing more
real crimes. It's PATHETIC. The S.P.D. is a clown show and the chief is an
absolute joke. The Berwyn heights incident and the somerset county incident you
wrote on are proof that the police are out of control from the top-down.

I can think of a lot of other examples but these are one's that I know, first
hand, to be true.

I have designed numerous websites from the ground up, and I can tell you that
it's a terribly amateurish, poorly designed site. It doesn't even say who
designed it but I'm sure they got paid, overpaid, with tax money.

One more thing before I sign off, Joe. You have said over and over again that
we need new blood to take power in WiCo. And I agree, but look at the S.P.D.
for example. Who would want to join a militant-hair-cut-wearing,
gun-wielding-for-penis-compensation, beating-up-college-kids, dog-shooting,
clown show such as the SPD? I fear that if anyone with a good heart actually
joined the force, they would be alienated and castigated for trying to change
anything or for standing up to any of the officers with seniority. And that
probably is true in politics, too. To change anything I think a lot of firing
and rehiring would have to take place from the bottom up.

The Lovely Downtown Plaza

Do you recall all the way back to the Mike Dunn days when I was posting these pictures of the Downtown Plaza and Mike stated at a Council Meeting that they needed to do something about the residential trash being placed in trash cans on the Plaza?

Obviously their PLAN never worked because the trash cans are regularly overflowing and as usual, the Mayor has failed everyone on the Plaza and couldn't care less. It's time for a change in Salisbury and considering Bubba was the one agreeing with Mike Dunn, obviously he has no clue how to seriously complete a project and just states what the people want to hear and then drops the ball. And this guy wants to run for Mayor? Sounds like a lot of the same, if you ask me.

Single Vehicle Accident On Rt 50 West Backs Up Traffic

A single vehicle lost control heading west bound on Rt 50, hit an old telephone/utility poll and flipped several times. The two people inside were trapped while the Fire Department carefully got them out. One through the drivers window and the other through the rear window. Traffic backed up for miles on Rt. 50 as everyone seemed to want to stop and take a look at what was going on. The Wicomico County Sheriff's Department closed off one lane so emergency vehicles could get in and out of the scene.

Friday's Gas Prices

This was somewhat of a relief considering we filled up the Motor Coach and took a couple of days off. Sam's Club is kicking every one's tail, especially Gordy Marts. The lowest I've seen them is $3.71 on Friday at Nanticoke Rd. IMHO, I believe they continue to gouge everyone by reducing their prices far slower than anyone else.

The Bubba take home vehicle is once again parked in front of his home again this weekend. Your tax dollars hard at work. The big question is, will he retire from the SHA before he runs for Mayor? Or will he suck off the taxpayers and double dip?
