Today I will deliver a check to Mr. Paul Wilber as the City illegally charged me for documents without warning ahead of time. That's OK, it's only about $56.00. I put in a PIA Request for all the bills for bottles water in the City to prove the Mayor was in fact NOT being truthful with the Citizens referencing that matter. The Mayor claims the City does NOT pay for bottled water, said so on PAC 14. I plan to prove her wrong.

Now that my request is in and I'm going to pick up such said documents, all of a sudden the water fountain is broken on the 3rd floor of the GOB? Things that make you go, hmmmmmmmmm?

URGENT - Amnesty Vote Wednesday

This is not a drill. This is the real thing.

A massive amnesty for illegal aliens is probably coming up for a vote Wednesday in the Senate.

Our Capitol Hill Team just contacted me and reported that Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-Nev.) has just filed for "cloture" on S. 2205 (the DREAM Act amnesty).

If Americans don't phone Tuesday until the switchboard shuts down, it looks like we're going to have a brand new amnesty for illegal aliens coming out of the Senate later this week.

PLEASE CALL YOUR TWO SENATORS AND PLEAD THAT THEY VOTE 'NO' ON THE S. 2205 CLOTURE ON WEDNESDAY.

Sen. Reid is hell-bent on getting this amnesty through the Senate as fast as possible and before we can fully mobilize the country as happened when we defeated his Comprehensive Amnesty bill in June.

Here is something pretty amazing: After the American people overwhelmingly rose up against the big compromise in June that traded an amnesty for some mediocre extra enforcement, Sen. Reid is trying to push through an amnesty WITHOUT ANY ENFORCEMENT MEASURES!

He is using the Rule 14 that I told you about last night to avoid any committee debate, hearings or deliberations. Filing for cloture means that he can bring the amnesty up on Wednesday.

The first vote will be on whether to allow the amnesty to come to the Senate floor for full debate and eventual vote. If we can hold the YES votes below 60, we can stop the bill in its tracks. We need 41 NO votes to guarantee killing it.

TALKING POINTS AGAINST THIS AMNESTY


We will be providing you more detailed talking points when you click on the phone notes on your Action Buffet corkboard.

But here are the things I am emphasizing to the media, most of whom can't seem to understand how I can possibly oppose helping out a bunch of good kids whose parents are the ones who broke the law by bringing them here to be illegal aliens.

S. 2205 would do what all amnesties do -- entice millions more people to become illegal aliens here. The word across the world would be that immigration crime pays.


The DREAM Act amnesty doesn't just offer U.S. citizenship to illegal alien teenagers, it also provides amnesty to the parents of most of them. Once the amnestied teens become citizens they can obtain an amnesty for their parents.


S. 2205 provides for no extra enforcement to help ensure that families around the world don't risk their teenagers' lives by forcing them to enter the U.S. illegally across the deserts. Passage of this amnesty likely would increase deaths of illegal aliens in the desert as more and more people attempt to get into the country in preparation for the next amnesty.


Many of the advocacy groups pushing the DREAM Act amnesty openly say it is intended as a way to break the barrier and then to push for several more amnesties and rewards for illegal aliens.


Many of these teenagers weren't brought to the United States illegally by their parents. Rather, many of them came on their own and found illegal shelter with legal immigrants who were from their country.


If there is a compelling story for giving amnesty to any of these high school students, it should be told only after the rule of law has been restored, including a fully functioning entry/exit system at the border and mandatory verification of all new hires by all businesses, governments and non-p rofits.

Rebecca Gannon Says Hello

Hello everyone! I stumbled across Joe’s blog of Salisbury News, and thought I’d send an update of my own. For those of you who don’t remember me, I reported and occasionally anchored on WBOC, and you may have caught a glimpse of me at my second job, the hostess stand of Market Street Inn.

I’m out in Wichita, Kansas now, anchoring the FOX Kansas News at 9 and reporting at KWCH 12 News at 10 – they’re sister stations, much the way BOC and FOX Delmarva operate. I moved out here more than a year ago to work closer to my family. I loved working on the Eastern Shore (and eating on the Eastern Shore), but I love being back around my family more. I still check the local websites from time to time, and I do miss covering my beat (Worcester County) there.

Also...what's the deal with the new zoo posting this morning? You railed your ass off yesterday about how it's a waste of money, time, and materials. That no one should benefit from wireless in the park?? It was the worst thing Salisbury could do, blah blah blah. Now today you do a 180 and are all for it?? Seriously, Dude, you need to see a Doctor. You bounce from one extreme to the other in the blink of an eye."

Perhaps they might not be so harsh on me when I post such pictures of the Mayor IN PUBLIC? Trust me, all, I saved you from the OTHER photos you've seen far too often that make you want to upchuck your Lunch!

The Crossroads At Salisbury Is A Go

This project is expected to break ground within 3 months and I have to personally say, welcome!

With water & sewer available to this particular location and even more importantly, High Speed Internet, the possibilities of positive growth and great paying jobs is now within reach on the Eastern Shore.

Once again certain Developers are willing to take the risk in a horrible economy and get started on what looks like the future business growth location on the east side of Salisbury.

Mr. Trader said last night, "That's a lot of Windex, Joe." I couldn't agree more. However, someone is going to have to clean those windows daily and that too will create jobs.

I also happen to think this is smart growth and I hope to see more projects like this in the future so our children will want to stay here and afford it all at the same time.

The Ghost Of Council Woman Cathcart

Last night former Council Woman Lynn Cathcart confronted the Council talking once again about all this negativity. She wanted to let everyone know she's helping out with the Winterfest of Lights and that's one of the only positive things going on in the City of Salisbury.

She went on and on about negativity and as you can clearly see from the above photo, John Pick Wasn't Buying It!

Chief Webster Breaks The Law Again Last Night

Last night during the City Council Meeting there came a time when I decided to go downstairs and enjoy a brief smoke. During that time, Chief Webster came out of the building and walked over to his vehicle. He started to pull out but instead of taking the easy route he chose to actually pull into the parking lot in which I was standing, slowed down, then floored his gas across the parking lot. When he hit the curve to go behind the far GOB he started hitting his horn several times showing he is a MAN and then sped off and out of sight.

Here's a guy who pushes for a new noise ordinance against this very thing and then he goes off with his own horn several times? I also know that honking your horn for no reason is also against the law. But, he is the Chiefy of Police and who's going to write him a ticket, right?

What gets me is, I have a witness to this whole thing. Oh well, do as I say, not as I do. He sure did scare me though!

Many of you may have read the article in this morning’s paper wherein I was charged with DUI.

I apologize to my wife, mother and family, to my friends, and to the citizens of Princess Anne; and to my colleagues on the Commission. I also apologize to the Mayor and citizens of Salisbury.

I have no excuse, and there can be no excuse.

This was poor judgment on my behalf, and I accept full responsibility for that poor judgment. I recognize the damage this has done to those people who count on me, as a husband and father, as an employer in the retail world, and as a leader in the community. I recognize the embarrassment this has caused the entire Town. This hurts me much more than you can imagine.

I do not blame the trooper. She was only doing her job. She treated me fairly and with respect. She was very professional and I am sorry for my poor judgment which put her in this position.

The remorse that I feel goes beyond the difficult consequences and I respect the system that will ultimately judge my actions

We have worked hard, as a Commission, to improve the quality of life in our community, and I sincerely hope that this misjudgment will not reflect on all those accomplishments or on my colleagues.

Why is Council Woman Debbie Campbell My Hero?

Because she spanked Mayor Barrie Tilghman last night like you've NEVER seen before and I have the photos to prove it!

For months now Campbell & Cohen have been expressing their feelings towards the huffing and puffing as well as the Mayor regularly confronting the Council by moving out of her seat and sitting in front of the Council uninvited.

Last night Barrie thought she'd challenge them again by rudely relocating herself once again uninvited in front of the Council and Debbie Campbell said, NO MORE!

Campbell immediately confronted Louise Smith to have the Mayor removed and Louise sternly told the Mayor to go back to your seat.

I didn't realize that this was NOT covered by PAC 14 so you're getting exclusive footage of the Mayor being an Idiot once again and finally getting spanked. Barrie Tilghman is a GUEST at these Council Meetings and she's starting to finally learn she is not the main show any more.

How much money do you want to bet that Barrie will start demanding the rules be changed very soon allowing her to be in control?

Salisbury Goes Gangsta

Get in line Folks. It seems now you can go to the Downtown Plaza and create your own Gangsta Signature Bricks throughout the Plaza. Right now it seems to be FREE but I'd suspect that in no time the City will actually catch on and start charging its citizens for such recognition.

I'm told by inside sources that a new Chiefy Resolution is under way to cover the bases on this crime as the Courts could get overloaded with too many Gangsta Cases, not that they have EVER caught ANYONE doing this as of yet. Better get the resolution passed before they're overwhelmed though, right? LOL

States Attorney Mr. Davis Ruark was not available for comment on this matter.

WMDT Goes High Tech

If you're Homeless and bored, go visit WMDT on the Downtown Plaza and watch all the free TV you want on their high tech flat screen TV's. It's all a part of their new renovations within their window displays directly on the Plaza and it's pretty cool. Now all they need is free popcorn and FOB stickers and they'll be good to go. LOL

Don't Tell ME The State Police & Sheriffs Department Aren't Protecting Salisbury

There wasn't a single City of Salisbury Police Officer at this location. Why, because Chiefy knows the men from the State Police and County Sheriffs Department have his back and there's just no reason to send any more of his High School Graduates out onto the tough streets when the real men can handle it.

If you want to fight crime and NOT get hung up on, don't call 911. Call the Wicomico County Sheriffs Department. They're not afraid to take your call and they're not afraid of statistics. Think about it. If they, (the Salisbury Police Department) actually take your call and dispatch someone, their numbers go up. Instead, why not just hang up on you like they did the Peaceful Heart while he was being robbed at knife point.

So ALL of you know, I have put in for a PIA Request for the audio tapes of that Dispatcher hanging up three times. Once I get them I'll be sure to post them on this Blog and let the World know how the Salisbury Police Department serves and protects, NOT! How's that cup of coffee now Chiefy?

The Salisbury Zoo & Wireless Internet Access

My source tells me that the ethernet cable has degraded due to the elements. It sounds like somebody didn't install the cable properly (probably buried it in the ground), and it's gone to hell and no longer serves the purpose of passing data traffic between buildings (you've seen info on "slow uploads" which confirms this). The right way to do this would be to use conduit to provide all weather protection. Obviously, this would have been a lot more expensive to do the job right. Once again, the region's desire to do things cheap costs more money in the long run. Was it cheap in house labor with no technical supervision, or the lowest bid? Who knows...

There is a chance that the cable was run a long time ago, and was CAT5 and not the CAT5e cable that is typically used today. If that's the case, upgrading the infrastructure is probably a good idea. I'm not sure what was done, with what cable, or how. These are just guesses on my part.

To avoid the expense of properly running the cable (and perhaps to offer additional functionality in the future), somebody made the decision to make wireless connections between the buildings. Whether this is also supposed to provide wireless throughout the zoo for staff, I'm not quite sure. My guess is no, because I'm told the equipment proposed would operate on the 802.11a standard. This standard operates on a less polluted frequency (good thing), but typically a notebook would only have a range of about 50' in a typical office environment. Some newer notebooks don't even have 802.11a radios in them to save a few dollars for the manufacturer.

I was told that this system is *not* intended to provide Internet access to visitors. And using the 802.11a standard, I doubt that employees would really cover a lot of ground using this system.

It seems a shame to spend this kind of money for wireless networking, and not give the zoo keepers "anywhere" access to zoo records that might assist in improving standards of care for the animals.

The fact that the Zoo already purchased the equipment before going to the City Council clearly shows Alessi's arrogance and disregard towards the rules. I'm probably going to ask for the actual bid process and figures because they didn't bid this out either. Not through the Newspaper and so forth. Time will tell once again.

A Letter To The Editor About Salisbury Taxi

My friend and I were headed up to New York City last Saturday for a few days. Instead of driving up to Wilmington, DE to take the train, we opted to call a taxi to take us to the bus station in Salisbury to go to Wilmington. My friend called Salisbury taxi the morning of, giving them plenty of notice (2 hours) beforehand. When the time came they were suppose to arrive at her house, no one showed up. She called them and asked if someone was on their way, and the woman's response was, "We don't know where that's at". My friend explained to her that her house was located off of Jackson Road. The woman from Salisbury Taxi told us that someone will be there shortly. To save time, we dragged our suitcases down to the end of the driveway......waiting. Still no one. We pulled our suitcases back up to her house. Now unbelievably agitated because not only could we not make it in time to catch the bus, we had our tickets already and lost $120 for both round trip.

I was so frustrated with the situation, as my friend was on the computer getting driving directions to the train station in Wilmington, I decided I was going to call Salisbury Taxi to find out why they never showed up. As soon as I told the woman who I was, she said "Yea we've been trying to find your number, there's no way we would be able to get you to Trailways in time." I said, "I know, we just missed the bus." The woman became Irritated and responded back, “Well it’s not my fault you missed the bus!” I said, “You’re a taxi service! Don’t you guys have maps?” She replied “No”. So I ask, “Your drivers basically get in the car and drive around looking for where they have to go?” The woman then started to yell at me on the phone and screamed “Have a nice day” and hung up on me.

Not once in the three phone calls that were placed to Salisbury Taxi that morning did they ask for a contact phone number from us and on top of it all, if they were unsure of our location to pick us up, why didn’t she ask for directions the second time we had called them? The woman from Salisbury Taxi was incredibly unprofessional on the telephone and extremely rude. I wonder how dependable this taxi service is? Salisbury Taxi does not have any type of map or GPS system? They are suppose to provide a service to get people where they have to go, not to shout at customers on the phone when they inquire about their ride. I would not recommend their “services” to anyone. I’m sure we weren’t the first people who had to deal with this unprofessional employee, and I am very sure we are not the last.

In the wake of April's Virginia Tech tragedy, Columbine and other incidents in recent years including the shooting at a high school in Cleveland just this past week--focusing on the mental health of young adults is all the more important these days. It is becoming increasingly clear that mental health issues in our schools have reached epidemic proportions. Perhaps the most startling evidence is that suicide is a leading cause of death among students aged 15-24, according to a recent study by the American Association of Suicidology. Many students do not discuss their problems, which may include depression, anxiety, ADHD, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, sleep deprivation and more. Unfortunately, stigma is the largest barrier to seeking help. Szabo is doing whatever he can -- to help change that.

“It’s important we remove the fear and shame often associated with mental illness, and communicate to every young person that it’s OK not to feel OK,” says Szabo. “Help is out there, and they can move forward. Most importantly, they need to know they’re not alone.”


Szabo is one of the top speakers in the country on the college circuit, and serves as Director of Youth Outreach for the National Mental Health Awareness Campaign (NMHAC). He comes to Salisbury shortly after his appearance on the CBS EARLY SHOW, where he discussed the issue of back-to-school stress, and what parents, friends, and others can do if they are concerned a student may be at risk for developing a serious mental health issue. Szabo's mission is to help young people to better understand and break through the negative stigma associated with mental illness, so that they may feel free to seek the help they need.

Cruise For A Cause

On Saturday 20 October, the Wheels That Heal Car Club held their annual Cruise For A Cause. Over 100 cars, motorcycles and trucks left K-Mart parking lot for Ocean City Harley-Davidson at 1230.

The Cruise this year raised money for Brandy Cullen (bone cancer of the spine) and Robbie Joyce (brain tumor). Sadly, Brandy passed away before the Cruise took place.

$16042.00 was raised and split between the two families to help with medical costs and in the case of Brandy, burial expenses.

All profits during the year go to Local Charity. Most of our operating expenses are covered by dues and donations from club members.

Last year Eagle One car products selected Wheels That Heal as one of four Clubs in the country to receive their "Eagle One Golden Rule Award for the most outstanding community service program in the Eastern Region".

Did You Earn Your Desk?

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten.

On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks.

Looking around, confused, they asked, "Ms. Cothren, where're our desks?"

She replied, "You can't have a desk until you tell me what you have done to earn the right to sit at a desk."

They thought, "Well, maybe it 's our grades." "No," she said. "Maybe it's our behavior." She told them, "No, it's not even your behavior."

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom. By early afternoon television news crews had started gathering in Ms. Cothren'sclassroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the deskless classroom, Martha Cothren said, "Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you."

At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it. Twenty-seven (27) U.S. Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall. By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned.

Martha said, "You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now,it's up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could havethe freedom to get an education. Don't ever forget it."

It's a great story, true or not.

See what I mean? A Zoo in Chicago held a competition with Pumpkins. Why doesn't the City hold some kind of contest. I think that would be realy cool, don't you?

There had to be more than 100 pumpkins in this contest ranging from 2 years old through adults. There were at least 6 large tables set up showing them off and I have to admit, they were pretty cool. Does Salisbury have any kind of City Contest like this? Wouldn't that be a cool idea?

Last week was another very exciting week for our campaign. We launched our first television ad of the campaign on Tuesday. (Visit the "Media and Video" section of our website to view it). We also received the endorsement of former Republican Governor Bob Ehrlich. Governor Ehrlich helped our campaign bring in over $50,000 at the event on Thursday night.


During this last week, Governor O'Malley also announced that a Special Session will begin on October 29, 2007. Right after his announcement, he left the state to go to Ireland. Maryland faces a serious budget issue, and the governor decided instead of continuing to deal with the issue, he would take a trip to Ireland. If O'Malley was willing to work hard, we could solve this deficit with NO NEW TAXES. The Maryland General Assembly has been spending money it does not have, and now we face a 1.5 billion dollar structural deficit. If the growth of spending in state government is limited to a responsible rate, the deficit can be solved without raising taxes. When our family budgets get tight, we do not spend as much money. The same should be the case with government.


Liberal Democrats in DC are doing the same thing that liberal Democrats in Annapolis are trying to do to Maryland, and our congressman is helping them do it. The incumbent has voted for over 30 billion dollars in new taxes this year alone. To put that in perspective, the entire state budget of Maryland is 31.5 billion dollars. Maryland's 1st Congressional District deserves a congressman who supports fiscal responsibility. I will NEVER vote for a single tax increase and will oppose all wasteful government spending.

Lining Up For Miles To Get Into Cherrystone Camp Ground This Past Weekend

Talk about an unbelievable weekend! Cherrystone Campground enjoys its busiest weekend just before Halloween and we were fortunate enough to be able to slide in at the last minute and get a spot.

They have more activities for the kids than any other Campground I have ever been to. I'll post some pictures of some of these activities to give you some additional ideas locally for Halloween.

The cool part is, Trick or Treating only lasts one hour. The reason why is, you can collect more candy in one hour at a Campground than you can walking 6 hours in neighborhoods, believe me! It's more than satisfying for any child at any age.
