Wicomico Council Supports Student Transportation Bill

SALISBURY – Officials in Wicomico County last week agreed to send a letter of support for proposed legislation that could improve student transportation.

Last week, representatives from Wicomico County Public Schools (WCPS) came before the Wicomico County Council seeking support for proposed state legislation permitting alternative modes of student transportation.

According to the Code of Maryland Regulations, often referred to as COMAR, school systems can utilize two types of vehicles – school buses and taxicabs – to transport students to or from school or school-related activities. While a school system can seek a waiver from the state superintendent to use alternative vehicles, that approval does not permit transportation to and from school.

Desmond Hughes, transportation services director for WCPS, told the council last week that those regulations were incongruous with federal mandates.

so now we can pay for taxis to get those kids to school! maryland schools = failure!

I always found this ludicrous. If a child is displaced and has to move, then the child should go to the new school district. Yes, it is disruptive to the child, but that is life.
Personally I would never want my child in any of our local cabs, no matter the situations.

Desmond Hughes, enough said! Nothing like getting a job based on your wife being in politics

I would love to see a list of the taxi cab Companys that will provide these services. Now the Maryland taxpayer can provide support to the local gang of your choice. Contraband and firearms delivered tariff already included. This folks has more sour grapes than a grape vine in early spring.

There are more kids in odd situations that are not their fault than you would imagine.

The taxi operators and drivers, and the unlicensed services don't inspire much confidence.

Couple decades back we paid for after school taxi to move one kid from school to the daycare his brother was at; we'd pick them up at the daycare. That worked out fine. My impression is that taxi service has declined since.

Apparently you don’t feel the need to follow the law? The boe has no choice but to do this per federal law.

You are correct 1024, just because it's the law doesn't make it right, and I break laws daily. Bet you do to
