New Poll Shows Majority of Marylanders Oppose Tax Increases to Fund Education

Maryland's Voters Firmly Believe They Are Taxed Too Much

ANNAPOLIS, MD – The House Minority Caucus today released polling data proving the majority of Marylanders oppose paying higher taxes to fund increases in education spending. The poll was conducted by Gonzales Research & Media Services from December 23, 2019 through January 4, 2020. The poll found that a whopping 94% of Maryland voters believe they pay enough or too much in taxes with 65% of responding that they and their families pay too much. When asked specifically if they are willing to pay higher taxes to fund increases in education spending, 52% of Marylanders say NO, with 55% of women rejecting higher taxes for education. Less than 2% of respondents were willing to pay the thousands in taxes each year that will be necessary to increase spending at proposed levels.

"These poll results confirm what we already believed to be true," said House Minority Leader Nic Kipke. "Maryland families are not willing to absorb the massive tax increases that will be necessary to fund this surge in education spending."

"Maryland families are still making payments on the last failed education plan," said House Minority Whip Kathy Szeliga, referring to the spending increases required by the Thornton Commission, the last revamp of education funding that failed to achieve many positive outcomes. "It is no surprise that taxpayers are suspicious of another set of vague promises tied to massive spending amounts. It is their money that is being thrown at the problem, and they've seen this all before."

Delegates Kipke and Szeliga are available for further comment. The polling results are available here.

This is great news but the Maryland Democrats including Hogan will push for this worthless education plan and force new taxes on us citizens. I stated they would raise taxes for this worthless program in previous post.

Well, now they've done it.

Soon you will see the big #redfored rallies everywhere. They will get animated too, wanting more money.

We already pay a small fortune to educate our kids and are getting very little for it. Test scores aren't going up-- in fact, they keep revising the testing programs to hide the lack of real progress.

The bottom line is what the child actually knows and can do.

We've all seen how that is going...

Public education is a thirsty bottomless pit.
Pour more and more money in without any results.

With the money we pay already and what is being turned out shows we are getting screwed! No more public schools!

I was under the impression that years ago they came up with the bright idea to open Casino's so the funds could paid for education instead of raising taxes. Could someone tell me where all that money is REALLY GOING?????????

Spend it on seniors. Not waste on people who don't want to be educated.

Doesn't matter they will call it something else and you stupid morns will buy it hook, line an sinker... Remember its for the kids!!!!

But mark my words here and now, once they get the tax increase, watch the politicians give themselves a pay raise instead!!!

If you think you're taxed too much in Maryland, find another state to live in. Maryland will NEVER stop raising taxes on it's citizens. When they pass new legislation that creates any increase in spending (like they do every day they are in session)it automatically triggers an increase in taxes. It's called a balanced budget requirement. And most people think a balanced budget requirement is a good thing that stops politicians from putting the state in debt. It does, but it results in taxes constantly going up. And that is NOT a good thing. Only a politician would like a balanced budget amendment for our country.

The only way I would agree to give schools more funding would be if they start EXPELLING the trouble making thugs that have and continue to ruin our schools. Also some more qualified teachers and administrators would need to be done too.

In the 70s they passed the lottery bill for education. My understanding is that money now goes to the general fund.

No More money until the BOE is cleaned out of ones like Fitzgerald, and Hanlin. Teachers don't need to get paid more so that they can spend more on buying drugs illegally and sexual abuse of students. If they make enough money to illegally buy drugs and sex then they don't need a raise.

Lol, where would you even get students for Wicomico Co then. 80% of the students are so called troublemakers. Also qualified teachers and administrators, what weird thing have you been smoking. No one wants to move to Wicomico Co. Why else do you think the County is struggling to find teachers, which is weird since you guys are pumping them out like crazy at SU. This simply means none of them are staying, and for what reason low pay, bad students, and hostile environment. I really can't wait until the consensus this year, for you morons to realize that the County shrunk.
