Harris Announces Over $6 Million in Grants to Address Homelessness

WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) applauded the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) announcement of grants to support local homeless assistance programs across the nation, including over $6 million in counties within Maryland’s First Congressional District. HUD’s Continuum of Care grants will provide critically needed support to local programs on the front lines serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The Continuum of Care Program is designed to promote a community-wide commitment to the goal of ending homelessness; to provide funding for efforts by nonprofit providers, States, and local governments to quickly re-house homeless individuals, families, persons fleeing domestic violence, and youth while minimizing the trauma and dislocation caused by homelessness; and to optimize self-sufficiency among those experiencing homelessness. Eligible project applicants for the program are nonprofit organizations, States, local governments, and instrumentalities of State and local governments, and public housing agencies.

Grants in the First Congressional District include:
  • Wicomico, Somerset, and Worcester Counties – $1.3 million
  • Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline, and Dorchester Counties - $710,000
  • Cecil County – $231,000
  • Carroll County - $384,000
  • Harford County - $863,000

Congressman Harris made the following statement:

“As a member of the Committee on Appropriations, I applaud the award of these federal grants to local homeless programs in the First Congressional District. As our nation continues to deal with homelessness, I know how valuable these dollars are in supporting communities seeking to help individuals and families struggling with homelessness. I thank Secretary Carson and commend him for his leadership on this issue.”

They always spread these programs too thin and lack the strategic vision to be impactful all so congressmen can bring home the pork. Then you wonder why nothing really gets done. Why not concentrate funds in areas that are hit the worse so that you have multi-year impacts for a larger number of people?

This IS what has made gilliss the company it is today! Pretty easy to build a business when you have these types of guaranteed contracts to count on

If this money isnt being closely accounted for {and it isnt usually} then youd just as well send it to ukrane like your comrades do.

Lets use some of this grant to house them at the former Poplar Hill facility in Quantico. The building and infrastructure are already in place - would be a turn key operation.

Poplar Hill Pre-Release is a nearly 70 yr old facility that fell into disrepair long before it was abandoned. I can't imagine it has improved while left vacant. It is hardly a "turn key" facility & would take the bulk of the Wicomico County grant to make it liveable.

Churches do a great job all winter long without a government dime

It would be better to see the money spent on something like poplar Hill so the local taxpayers can actually see where the money is being used rather than the usual lies and deceit. Don't let Jake Day get his hands on it, he'll be using for Franchot's "coming out" party kicking off his campaign

This just drives me crazy. People obviously think grant money grows on trees. It's tax money people and we are in 20 trillion dollars of debt now. Where and when does this foolishness stop? This only should sound good to a liberal, any conservative should realize this is not really good for America. Harris is usually a good conservative but this grant money thing drives me bonkers.

@11:35 have to agree with you on that!! Must be pretty nice to get 2-3 of these a year thrown your way. You can afford to branch out into different markets when you can bank on covering all your overhead with the help of idiots like Jake Day throwing you bones like that

I agree - throw money at it in every direction. By the time each entity is addressed financially there is very little monies to accomplish anything significant. Democrat be run project again I guess.

It's probably more livable than under the bridge by the library or in a box behind the Goodwill. Really though the majority of homeless need to be in a mental institution not a government home. For the guys that hang around Halo drinking, drugging and yelling at imaginary people a "leg up" is not going to get their life straight. Government throwing your money down a hole like they always do. Nowadays they try to say, oh no we paid for it with a grant. It's still taxpayer money. You can see how well grant money is being spent here in Salisbury for the boy mayor's roundabouts. Guess what. This same wastefulness is happening in tens of thousands of towns across the entire country.

So keep cheering like "grant money" is somehow not your money just because it comes out of a bigger pot.

He's going to use it to buy Jared Schablein some new heels and purses. He would spend it on Liz but she's found greener pastures.
