2020’s Most & Least Educated States in America

For a growing number of Americans, a good education is the ticket to a better future. College opens doors to more career opportunities, higher earnings and new social connections, among other benefits. But how much schooling one receives also matters to some extent. Generally, the higher the level of education one completes, the higher their income potential and the lower their chances of unemployment become.

In this study, WalletHub examined the key factors of a well-educated population: educational attainment, school quality and achievement gaps between genders and races. We compared all 50 states across 18 total metrics grouped into two categories. The data set ranges from share of adults aged 25 years and older with at least a high school diploma to average university quality to gender gap in educational attainment.

Read on for our findings, commentary from a panel of experts and a full description of our methodology. A separate WalletHub analysis identifies the Most & Least Educated Cities.

You might notice on this list that the 'most educated' states are democrat-controlled with high taxes and people fleeing them for lower-cost-of-living states.

So if these people are so smart...

It means that the schools get better funding, there is a higher standard of living, and people are generally more wealthy in those states. Notably, most of the states at the top are "blue" and the ones at the bottom are "red". It's also interesting to note that the states at the top of the list would have lower levels of religiosity as compared to those at the bottom of the list.

939 daily you clowns show why education matters. Despite your belief in the political spin ("ohhh, those evil democrats are sending people running for the hills"), the migration trends we are seeing today were predicted long ago based on simple demographics. People moved in mass from the south in the 1900's to go after jobs in the industrial sector as well as professional jobs in a number of sectors in urban centers like New York. Now that folks have made their big dollars up north and are retiring, there is no need to stay in the snow. So they are heading south and west. Folks in CA who have made their money also don't want to stay when the rise of high paying tech jobs are making prices for everything higher. This isn't some tradeoff from politics. Simple demographics and economics. Face it: no one wants to stick around in your craphole towns like salisbury that have no jobs or culture.
