Texas shooter evaded background check by purchasing weapon in private sale

The 36-year-old gunman who killed seven people and wounded 22 others in West Texas on Saturday purchased his AR-style rifle from a private seller, federal law enforcement sources confirmed to CBS News. The purchase allowed the gunman to evade a federal background check. Sources also say the gunman was previously denied a gun purchase because he was determined to be mentally unfit.

The investigation into who sold the weapon is ongoing. Authorities said the gunman was killed by officers outside a busy movie theater in Odessa. It was at least the 38th mass killing this year.

Online court records show the gunman, identified as Seth Aaron Ator, was arrested in 2001 for a misdemeanor offense that would not have prevented him from legally purchasing firearms in Texas.

"...the 38th mass killing this year..."??
WRONG.
There were 39 - not 38.
Over this Labor Day weekend in Chicago, seven people were killed - 35 total shot and wounded.
That sounds like a mass shooting to me.
Maybe in Chicago they just call it a "normal weekend".
They all used handguns, by the way. So where are the Liberals screaming to ban handguns??

Of course! Why would a criminal/law-breaker want to keep a law?

10:46 congratulations on proudly perpetuating the gun problem in this country. How would you feel if you sold a rifle to a man who later used it to kill/wound your fellow countryman, including a 17 month old baby? The man failed a background check which is intended to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them, yet he was still able to get one. Perhaps you would change your tune if your loved ones were his targets. Let's pray we can come up with a solution before that happens.

6:01 private sales of firearms are legal in a number of places..

Should be easy to see who legally purchased the gun by searching the government records, right?

To 8:18.
Let me change what you said a little, and tell me if it makes sense:

"...congratulations on proudly perpetuating the [DUI] problem in this country. How would you feel if you sold a [CAR] to a [ALCOHOLIC] who later used it to kill/wound your fellow countryman, including a 17 month old baby? The man failed a [PHYSICAL] which is intended to keep [CARS] out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them, yet he was still able to get one. Perhaps you would change your tune if your loved ones were his targets. Let's pray we can come up with a solution before that happens"

Just how far do you want the government to go?

8:18- With the 2nd Amendment, there will undoubtedly be tragedies. History confirms that. Without the 2nd Amendment, there will undoubtedly be tyranny and oppression. History confirms that.

So now lawmakers want to regulate private gun sales (i.e. registration). All guns sold commercially today are registered, name and address of the buyers, and the serial numbers on the guns are registered. Requiring the registration of private sales closes the last privacy for gun owners. Lawmakers want ALL guns registered, and the ones in private hands are the only ones they don't know where they are. Once they close the "loophole," is is just one small easy step to pass a law requiring ALL guns be turned in to the government, or risk arrest, fines, and incarceration for not doing so. It is the goal of our corrupt government, and the anti-constitution democrats, to disarm American citizens in order to seal their absolute power over the people. Once they take the guns, we will be Venezuela. I'll give my unregistered guns away before I ever have them registered.
