Electrician shortage creates potential for six-figure jobs

America's skills gap is creating challenges in the electricians' industry, which is expected to have a labor shortage. of about 60 thousand workers by 2026, according to one CEO of one tool manufacturing company.

In order to fill the surplus of jobs, he started a program four years ago to convince students that becoming an electrician is the way to go. It has become so successful that it brought the entire industry together.

“What started out as more of a marketing tool for ideal industries, is actually transformed into an industry-wide marketing tool,” said Ideal Industries CEO Jim James to FOX Business’ Ashley Webster on Friday. “The first year we started this competition, it started with about 2,500 participants. We’re up to over 100,000 this year and next year we're expecting to be over 150,000 competitors.”

This is what happens when parents insist on their kids going to college even when the child doesn’t have the aptitude for academics. High schools should really push trade skills more but the delusional parents probably have hissy fits if their kids get such a suggestion from a guidance counselor.

Just don't call the IBEW.

This has been true for at least a decade that I know of. We have a friend master plumber and master electrician in Northern VA a one horse show who back then was charging between $150-$200/an hour for his services. He picked and chose who he wanted to do work for and kept it to just a few miles from home so he didn't have to fight traffic in the area. Also a few years ago other friends who knew their son wasn't college material sent him to heating/AC repair school. The first year he lived at home so no expenses and saved a little over $40,000 working 6am to 6pm. Last time I was talking to his mother she was complaining because he had a new car and a new truck and a boat. She said he's had more new vehicles then she and her husband combined and he's only in is mid 20's. But he also had an impressive investment portfolio for which she was proud. He bought Facebook when it first went public.

And what's wrong with the IBEW, been a union electrician for 15 years and have made over$100,000 seven out of the last eight years, and just under the years prior to that.

Agree. A lot of kids go to college for fun and drop out when it gets tough or lack of interest.

I took up shorthand and typing classes in highschool. No money for college. Ended up working for high ranking officials in an office environment With excellent pay and good benefits. Retired now and doing great. College is not the be all. I make more in retirement than alot of people make working full time.

That's funny 4:27, do have any reasons to back up that naive statement ? The IBEW provides electrical power to make your life comfortable. Think you can survive long without electricity? Go ahead and bash us some more. What do you provide for society ?
