A Viewer Writes: Insurance Thoughts

1. All Maryland vehicles MUST be insured at ALL times by a vehicle insurance company licensed in Maryland. Your vehicle insurance must cover, at a minimum:

$30,000 for bodily injury
$60,000 for 2 or more people
$15,000 property damage

These requirements are a joke. Especially property damage.

Just had a teenager driving his grandmothers car run thru our solar panels causing approx. $35K or more in damages.

His grandmothers policy will only pay me $15K.

My insurance company must pay the rest which could cause my rates to go up upon renewal.

Fifteen thousand covers almost nothing in today's World.

And $30K for bodily injury ? Really ??

Property should be at least $100K and bodily injury should be $500K.

That's not necessarily true. Your insurance company will then sue the grandmother to receive the additional compensation so your rates should not go up.

I had a friend who's kid was at fault for something similar. He now is one of three parents who have to pay 100 a month for the next few years. You can sue the parents. You shouldn't have to, agreed, but it is an option that might help. Being as though guilt is proven, a lawyer should be affordable, and more compensation is possible.

So do you want freedom and self responsibility? Or do you want local state federal governments dictating things like insurance... You can only choose one both at the same time just isnt possible.

Agree...might as well be uninsured!

You and/or your insurance company can file a lawsuit against them personally for liability damages!

Anonymous said...

You need to use the driver for the remainder of the damages.
Just because thier insurance only covers a part the driver is still liable.. get off your keister and fight for what is rightfully yours

You are supposed to sue for the difference this way the lawyers courts and judges all get paid

You must work for the insurance company. I don’t know about you but, I am insurance poor. I own a business and the cost of insurance is ridiculous. Car insurance, same thing. Cost should go down. I pay for years and years and never use it. I have to use it ONE time and my rates go up. It is a ridiculous racket.

Better than the illegals around with no insurance. Get as many drivers licenses that they want in sanctuary states. Get a ticket and no show in court, you will not find them. Dems are destroying America

The minimum legal Maryland car insurance coverage is: Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: $30,000 minimum per person / $60,000 minimum per accident. Property Damage Liability Coverage: $15,000 minimum. Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage: $30,000 minimum per person / $60,000 minimum per accident.

That's why I am against solar panels

Oh by the way the bare minimum car insurance requirement for Montana drivers is: $25,000 bodily injury per person per accident. $50,000 bodily injury for all persons per accident. $10,000 property damage liability. Get solar panels from Harbor Freight for $99.99 and claim 15K

Maybe you should file a civil suit against the driver and the insurance company for your losses. Or put up a barrier against future vehicles striking your solar panels which apparently are close to a vehicle right of way!

B.S. You really want everybody to have to pay more for auto insurance? It is so expensive now that average folks can't afford it. By raising the limits the insurance companies would sure be happy with all the extra profit. you must be a liberal, solve all problems by raising the cost. Taxes, insurance, minimum wage, and on and on and on.

Take them to court for the remainder.

But you're right, the minimums need to be bumped and risks for each driver reexamined. Driving Granny's car should require personal insurance held by the driver, not just Granny's.

Agreed.

A civil suit should comp you losses.

HOWEVER, all insurance requirements should be thrown out the window. No one should buy forced to buy insurance. It's a racket.

Signed,

A former insurance man

How about any involved in an accident that is not insured goes directly to jail for 72hrs.

You realize this is EXACTLY what happened with health insurance, and it's why health insurance is so expensive, right? You want higher coverage, you're going to pay higher rates, that's how it works...

The poor grandmother lives in an apartment. I doubt she has anything worth suing for. Her grandson is too young to have anything. Bottom line is the minimum insurance amount needs to be raised to be more in line with today's costs. $15K when you are repairing a vehicle or building is nothing now days.

Suing does no good, been through it and insurance only liable for the limits paid for.

I had an accident due to a medical emergency where I hit a metal traffic light pole. The state of Maryland replaced that pole and billed my insurance company for $32,000.00. That's right, $32,000.00! I'd still be paying for that pole it I had minimum liability coverage. Only a fool, or someone with a terrible driving record, or a low income person would insure their vehicle for minimum coverage. In an accident, you don't get to choose the value of what or who you hit, before you hit it. The low limits set by the state are so that low income people can drive. If low income people get sued, they have little to lose, if their liability exceeds their liability limits. Wealthier people that have much to lose, will pay for higher coverage, so they don't lose anything in a lawsuit.

"Property should be at least $100K and bodily injury should be $500K."

That's a fine statement, if you can afford it. If you can't, it's just saying that you don't think poor people should be allowed to drive. That's an elitist view.

Using this logic would guarantee that more drivers would be driving with NO insurance. That is not an option. Keep rates as low as possible and everyone benefits. I have minimum insurance and would recommend everyone do the same. I also have no comprehensive which is not required by law. The fact is most people never use it, it's a waste of money. Some people will buy anything that some salesmen is pushing even though it's a total waste of money.

1:59 That's why we need Universal Car Insurance For All!

/sarcasm

might want to shut up and count your blessings, if the fool was insured under MAIF, or you would get nothing!

You can afford solar panels, YOU can afford to insure them. Quit your belly aching. Why should someone have to spend more than is required by law to insure YOUR overly expensive toys? Same goes to luxury car owners. The law doesn't need to be changed to make insurance unaffordable for low income people, just so your overpriced toys get fixed for no cost to you, after an ACCIDENT.

There is no law preventing the complainer from carrying all the insurance he wants on his body and property. He doesn't have to rely on others, or the law to protect him and his property from damage.
