OCEAN CITY — The unseasonably warm weather has been both a blessing and a curse in and around the resort area as mild air temperatures and the inviting ocean resulted in two drowning deaths at Assateague on Sunday and dozens of rescues in Ocean City over the weekend.
Two people drowned in separate incidents on Assateague on Sunday in the area of the state park after getting caught in rip currents. Over in Ocean City, the Ocean City Beach Patrol’s skeleton crew still manning the beach via ATVs along with Ocean City emergency services rescued many, including one victim who was resuscitated with CPR.
With sunny skies and temperatures topping out in the 80s over the last week, the beach and ocean have remained inviting to swimmers heading into the second week of October.
Around 2 p.m. on Sunday, a Virginia man was swimming in the ocean at Assateague State Park in the area of the campground when he was caught in a rip current. According to reports, a surfer in the area assisted the victim. The 57-year-old victim was brought to shore and transported to Atlantic General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The Government should do more to save the weak. We can all pay for protection from our poor decisions.
That's what insurance is for, from health care, to accident, to disability, to burial. We're already on it. That doesn't even count the law enforcement, social services, teachers, firefighters and lifeguards.
How about Ocean City keeping Beach patrol on a little longer. Nope, easier to piss money away other things.
You can build a wall in the median of coastal highway to prevent drunks from not using the crosswalk RICKIE - but you can't fix STUPID when it comes to the ocean!
I imagine you/council will try to spend $$$$$$ to prevent people from drowning, its in YOUR nature!
I hope this was sarcasm and not an attempt at a thoughtful remark.
How about people being responsible for their own actions? These comments are a sad comment on the pervasiveness of the entitlement mentality.
It helps to read the whole story;) The OC Beach Patrol WAS at work (albeit with a smaller crew)... That's why they were able to SAVE peoples' lives on Sunday.
And people, it IS October, no matter what the weather says. Maybe any more swimming in the ocean needs to be saved for next summer...

The drownings occurred at Assateague IIRC so while the OC Beach Patrol was busy these accidents happened down the coast outside their service area.
