Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Press Release
On May 25, 2018 a Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Deputy responded to the Berlin Walmart in reference to a child left inside an unattended vehicle. Upon arrival the Deputy observed a child secured inside a vehicle with the windows up. The Deputy identified the mother of the child as Timothy Staples- Gordy of Berlin Maryland. Ms. Staples-Gordy stated she was only gone from the vehicle for a couple of minutes to retrieve a shopping cart for her son. The Deputy later determined Ms. Staples-Gordy was absent from the vehicle for over ten minutes while inside the store. The Deputy smelled a strong odor of alcohol from Ms. Staples-Gordy’s breath and observed her actions very animated. Ms. Staples-Gordy performed poorly on Standardized Field Sobriety tests. Ms. Staples-Gordy was subsequently placed under arrest. Following an interview with Department of Social Services. Ms. Staples-Gordy was charged with confine unattended child, reckless endangerment and false statement to an officer. She was also charged with multiple alcohol related traffic citations. Ms. Staples- Gordy was brought before a District Court Commissioner where she was released on personal recognizance.
