Flash flooding wreaks havoc in Frederick County

City of Frederick mayor declares state of emergency

ROSEMONT, Md. —
Frederick County officials are urging motorists to use caution Wednesday driving in the area after more than a half-foot of rain flooded several roads during Tuesday evening's storm.

Frederick City Mayor Michael O'Connor has declared a state of emergency Wednesday to take advantage of any state and federal assistance that might be available.

Portions of the county received in excess of 6.5 inches of rain Tuesday evening, flooding roads and stranding motorists.

Frederick County Emergency Communications Center received more than 300 calls to 911 in a five-hour time period, officials said. More than 60 rescues were made by fire and rescue personnel and law enforcement for people stranded in high water, officials said.

Even a MARC train was swamped, stranded for hours with 80 passengers on board. MARC service was disrupted into Wednesday on the Brunswick Line.
