Florida Senate Committee Taking Up Bill to Arm Teachers

Florida’s Senate Judiciary Committee is taking up a bill February 20 designed to allow designated teachers to be armed for defense of themselves and their students.

The bill was proposed by Sen. Dennis Baxley (R-12) before the February 14 attack on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, but remained idle.

USA Today reports that Sen. Greg Steube (R-23) stepped in following the attack, seized the bill, and pushed it to the forefront. They quote Steube saying, “I don’t feel gun-free zones protect anyone but criminals, and there is no evidence that says otherwise.”

The bill would allow the principal of a school to designate persons to carry firearms on campus.

The committee hearing comes as Senate President Joe Negron (R-25) displays openness to doing whatever must be done to keep schools safe. The day after the Stoneman Douglas High attack, he said he pushing “for more money for school safety and to allow district superintendents to act in their schools’ best interests.”

90% of the teachers at my kids school. I get the concept of armed teachers, looks good on paper. The reality is insane. There is no way the teachers I see should be armed.

She has a instructor with her, don't be so critical.

7:33 thank you for your infinite volumes of knowledge, it's a classroom setting, and the instructor is standing behind her. Maybe, just perchance, he is correcting it? Give her a break, she is obviously learning for they are in a classroom and you couldn't see that? Go away 7:33

So lets see. Now in an active shooter situation we'll have bullets flying from even more directions. Nothing can go wrong here.

Don't you think teachers have enough to deal with then arming themselves.
This is a extreme. Are there any guns rights advocates out there that can support even some gun control or is this an all or nothing opinion? As a person supporting some gun control with out taking away 2nd amendment rights is there any thing that guns owners and hunters could support? What about my rights?

Man I have seen some stupid people but the posters here take the cake. IF teachers would grow a spine and get trained to CCW little crazy snowflake democrat kids would think twice before trying to shoot up another school. The coach in FL was a hero, the teachers union in Wicomico WANT dead children. PERIOD. Democrat crazies WANT ORE dead kids because their side can them push for more gun control, instead of solving the problem which is ccw for certain teachers.

I'm pro second but I do NOT think the answer is turning schools into gun ranges. You want to talk about our children being exposed to violence too young? Their teachers will explain that the gun in the corner is to kill someone that tries to come kill them. GREAT idea

And swat rolling into a situation with multiple shooters. I'm sure they'll be able to instantly tell who the good guy is
