New California declares 'independence' from California in bid to become 51st state

The founders of New California took an early step toward statehood Monday with the reading of their own Declaration of Independence from California, a state they describe as "ungovernable."

Their solution: Take over most of current-day California — including many rural counties — and leave the coastal urban areas to themselves.

"The current state of California has become governed by a tyranny," the group, led in part by vice chairman Robert Paul Preston, declared in a document published online.

The split would look something like this, per the group: Above

The eastern shore of MD should have been the 51st state as we had first dibs!

Give it a few years, you new California will be the same old California so no need to succeed...

5:56: FYI - Richard Colburn, former MD Senator from the eastern shore actually proposed legislation for the eastern shore secession from western shore MD. I agree, we should have been the first to declare ourselves the 51st state of the union.

If New California secedes, then President Trump will gain the vast majority of CA's 55 electoral votes and that will all but ensure him another term as President.

Good idea but good luck financing that endeavor.

The eastern shore could not support it's self. Taxes would be sky high for infrastructure.

Old California - (San Francisco Bay area) - is already bankrupt anyway. Most of those towns like San Bernardino, Stockton, Azusa, among others have already filed bankruptcy. CALPER now has the authority to cut pensions to the defunct townships. What a financial catastrophe.

How does Vermont do it with a population similar?

6:36 Easily - with high taxes and minimal roads.

The income tax has a top rate of 8.95%. This ranks as the 7th highest in the U.S., although it only applies to taxpayers making over $411,500 per year. Meanwhile, total state and local sales taxes range from 6% to 7%. SmartAsset has gathered all of the relevant facts and figures about Vermont's individual taxes.

We need one County one vote in Maryland that will clear everything up. Every state should have that. that would clear everything up along with what the federal government does with the Electoral College. Our founding fathers were brilliant

I think this is a great idea. I would still be 50 states because of all of Delaware would be in this great state. We may want to give away Wilmington.
just call it Delmarva. Lets vote on it this week.
