Homeless Individuals Charged With Daytime Boardwalk Robbery

OCEAN CITY — Three area homeless citizens were arrested on assault and robbery charges last week for their roles in a knife-point robbery on the Boardwalk in the middle of a Friday afternoon.

Around 3:30 p.m. last Friday, an Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) officer responded to the area of South 1st Street and the Boardwalk for a report of a male being robbed and threatened with a knife. The victim told police he had just finished a shift at a nearby restaurant and was sitting on a bench on the Boardwalk and looking at his cell phone when he suddenly felt someone grab him from behind by his hair and pull his head backwards.

The victim told police the suspect, later identified as Rebecca Cakar, 45, of no fixed address, demanded he give her money and cigarettes. The victim told Cakar he did not have any money or cigarettes and attempted to stand up, but another suspect, identified as William Acosta-Barbosa, 37, of no fixed address, confronted him along with Cakar.

Hey geriatric CITY HALL - fix this ONGOING problem and NOW....before the TV stations WEST of the Bay Bridge start reporting this!!!

By the way, just keep thinking they don't read the local papers AS WELL AS SBYNEWS!!!

BAM that did just happen too!

I want to be as polite and civil as possible to the posters that predict some apocalypse of tourism in Ocean City because of this (and a few other) events:
You are complete, total idiots.
1. "Family friendly" doesn't mean no crime. There's crime EVERYWHERE. Even at Disney World.
2. Two - count'em - TWO homeless degenerates try to strong-arm some guy for smokes and cash. Two out of about 250,000 people, and you suggest going to OBX.
Idiots.

Two years ago the mayor and council specifically discussed the issue of the homeless wreaking havoc on locals, tourists, and businesses. The mayor declared them off-limits to LE and their numbers have increased dramatically since. They continually harass people, drink all day in plain sight, intimidate anyone who uses the restrooms where they camp out, and take up entire benches sleeping with all their worldly possessions. Like the late-night thugs, they are given passes for almost everything. But don't worry: kids can't sleep on the beach at night and Meehan and Co. are cracking down on the smokers!

Thanks for setting us straight Rick!

11:30 PM Walk the boards and around downtown from maybe ten to midnight, preferably on a weekend, and get back to us.

7:33AM:
Name ANY city of 300,000 people(even 50,000) where it's perfectly safe to walk the downtown streets in complete and total safety - a downtown that is absolutely devoid of crime.
You, and many others, may enjoy the more rural setting for that "10 to midnight walk", but obviously there are 100's of thousands willing to take a VERY slight risk by walking and enjoying the 'Boards at those hours.
Go to one of the many Boardwalk webcams at 11 o'clock during the height of the season. You'll see the entire strata of the population strolling by - including MANY families with their kids, even at that time of night. After midnight - a different story. But nowadays you MUST be sensitive and aware of your surroundings. Not just in OC - but ANYWHERE.
Do you think these people sense fear? I don't think so.

Crime, per capita, is worse in Nags Head and Duck than it is in Ocean City.
Look it up.

Will have to look to see who is missing from their benches (or ground) this weekend at the South Transit Station. Had their mug shots appeared in the news we would allready know who to avoid.

okay 1130/807 I'm gonna "bite" at your 50,000 figure where I'm totally safe:

FedEx Field (78K)
Ohio Stadium (100K+)
Neyland Stadium (100K+)
Ravens Stadium (68K+)
Michigan Stadium (105K+)
Penn State Beaver Stadium (105K+)
Daytona International Motor Speedway (150K++)
Indianapolis Motor Speedway (300K+)
NFL/NCAA Football Stadiums
NASCAR race tracks
Soccer Stadiums
Et al....shall I continue FRIEND?

We see your point and I trust you understand the overall point here. A storm has been a brewin in OC proper for some time. We "thought" a shake-up with the politico's in City "Fall" would bring some 21st Century changes. Hell, they brought in a City Manager from FL who knew exactly how to build a strategic plan. BUT in their haste to hire him, they forgot to look at his personal setbacks - hence he was fired for alcohol related challenges. Things have steadily become worse around these parts. More and more criminal disruptions than the norm (i.e., drunks during the summer-time) seems to be taking center stage and very little progress addressing it has taken place. More important issues like profanity, tobacco, painting trash cans, removing trees on others property since it bothers "A" city official, cash grabs with parking, ticketing trailers and the latest - BOOBIES - have taken priority.

Action has been asked for, delays or even EXCUSES have been the norm. Whats sad, this has now become a year long issue rather than just a summertime one.....ever more sad, we're only 8 days into Summer time!

8:07 You are incorrect (and probably the mayor or a council member). I walk it regularly late at night and roving hordes of feral thugs have taken over. The police are virtually nonexistent. Every time I go I see families leaving in shock. I don't care about any other city, but I care about Ocean City and how Meehan has allowed and even encouraged the takeover. OC wasn't like this before Meehan was in charge. I dare you to walk it with me a couple of times and see for yourself. It's awful when people come on here and call each other names, so I won't, but you don't know what you're talking about.

Guess the next thing you know, local Liberals will be crying it's global warming that made them homeless and commit robbery.

[Not the mayor nor a council member, by the way. Just a realist.]
I'll just say this: I came here with my family as a kid; then I partied like an idiot when I was an idiot teenager; then as a young professional I would spend my week-long vacation here.
When the family (wife - 3 kids) came into being, I bought a condo and loaded up the car and brought them all down for a couple of weeks.
My vacation condo is now my place of retirement, and the grandkids come visit me regularly.
The complaints you (and 11:19AM) make about OC are exactly what my Grandparents said about this town back in the 50's. Just insert "dirty hippies" with "Thugs". (And we all know who you're talking about when you say thugs.)
It was the "end of Ocean City" back in the mid-60's.
Listen... I'm not connected in any way to this town - except that I do love it and love the memories that were made, being made, and memories to come. (Forty-four years with BG&E.)
This beautiful town - warts and all - will be here and thriving long after we are all gone.
Some things never change - and Ocean City, thank God, is one of those things.

11:19:
Do you have any idea how ridiculous it is comparing stadiums with cities?
If you don't, let me offer you one more safe stadium:
"Manchester Arena".

Ravens Stadium? Are you kidding.
Yeah, I guess you're safe inside, but leave there and walk just a few feet in the wrong direction and you'd be dust.
