Candidate for Md. governor says state should start single-payer health program

Maryland gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous (D) told a gathering of progressive activists in Western Maryland this week that he plans to push for a state-run, single-payer health-care system if he wins the governorship — assuming the federal government doesn’t already have such a program in place.

Jealous, who co-chaired Sen. Bernie Sanders’s Maryland presidential campaign last year and helped launch the national progressive activist group Our Revolution, confirmed his plans in an interview Thursday, shortly after Republicans in the U.S. Senate unveiled plans to roll back the federal government’s support for health care with a repeal of the Obama-era Affordable Care Act.

“We have to make sure every Marylander who currently lacks health care gets it,” Jealous said. “I’m committed to getting single-payer.”

“We have to make sure every Marylander who currently lacks health care gets it,”

This is the one who doesn't get it. NOBODY lacks health care. What the liberals want (and have wanted) to do is get somebody ELSE to pay for that care.

I am seriously considering changing my registration to Democratic so I can vote for their least likely to win candidate during the primaries then vote conservative Republican in the final election.

Unless they drastically increase taxes Single Payer is out of the question.

Go away commie boy. If this left wing nut is all the Demoncrats have to offer the Republicans may win again in this blue state!

What an absolute moron! Pay attention to the fruits and nuts in CA - they thought about this for about an hour before waking up to the inevitable bankruptcy! They could legalize weed, tax it at 35%, and still not have enough money to pay for it! There aren't enough medical professionals to deal with the existing patient load - then add everyone that will flock here for free care!

He must have visited Colorado recently!

335 you're already being taken advantage of. They pull the wool over your eyes and make you blame the poor while they cut taxes for themselves.

No! The cost or healthcare is the issue NOT the insurance!!!

glad I'm not jealous. seriously who the f has the last name jealous? totally made up!

So not only do we have to pay for everyone else and then have no choice for our own healthcare. Yea that's what I want. Doesn't everyone?

Socialized medicine. Ask Canadians how that is working out. These Socialists are hypocrites; investigate how many homes Bernie and his wife own. He and she are also being investigated for a suspicious $10 million loan for Burlington college. Hmmmmmm.

He is not alone, Just read Elizabeth Warren is pushing for this in her state. They want to end private insurance and force us to go with a single payer system under medicare. Remember the supreme court ruling, that health insurance is the same as taxes. Pay your taxes!!!!!
Eventually this may happen. Get rid of private insurers in favor of government healthcare like Canada, and the UK as well as many other countries.
I see limitations on benefits and more people dying waiting for operations or procedures. Government will decide like Britain, if it is worth it, based on medical condition or age to give you a life saving treatment.
It's coming wither we like it or not. We will be lucky to take home a quarter of what we earn in after tax income when this happens.
