Thieves allegedly using 'mystery device' to open and start vehicles

PORTLAND, Ore. — The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) says new technology is being used to unlock vehicles, start them up and steal them. It's believed to be happening in Northwest Portland.

For years, car break-ins puzzled neighbors near Northwest Cornell Road and Westover Road. Thieves appeared to be gaining entry to cars without smashing a window or tampering with locks.

"Neighbors were certain they had locked their cars the night before and found them unlocked the next morning," Ginger Burke told KATU News. "I think it's been happening for a long time."

Buy a new key fob, follow the instructions on the package that tell you to stand next to your vehicle & push the fob's buttons a certain way to "pair it to your vehicle.

Now, why wouldn't that work on the car across the street?
