Ocean City Bus Cameras Not Expected This Summer

OCEAN CITY – Ocean City officials are still waiting to install camera surveillance equipment on municipal buses with grant money the town received late last year.

In a Transportation Committee meeting Tuesday, Brian Connor, assistant superintendent for transportation, told members there were delays in getting approval to solicit a request for proposal (RFP), which will push back the town’s installation timeline several months.

Last year, the town received a $500,000 grant to install hundreds of surveillance cameras both inside and outside Ocean City’s entire bus fleet, at the recommendation of the Maryland Transit Authority (MTA). Officials could then use the saved footage in the event of an incident.

The original goal to install cameras before the 2017 season begins is no longer an option, according to Connor, who now expects the equipment to be installed this upcoming fall at the earliest.

Sorry the implementation is not for this summer when they see more tourists and the traffic on them much busier. This could always wind up in law suits when fights take place or God forbid something worse could happen. The town of OC could be liable. God Speed in this case, as tensions on race and politics gets into the fore front.

delays...DELAYS?

City Hall will go the extra mile to remove a tree from a property because someone doesn't like a tree; make accommodations for haunted houses; ciggy butts; never found a dollar it didn't like.....but can't get it together for making a decision that BENEFITS everyone and won't make Guy Guy pucker when a lawsuit is prompted.

Come on folks what is more important - making sure there is a nice wall in the median so drunks from seacrets don't play frogger or actually doing something POSITIVE with cams on buses to attend to all the other drunks in town. Its all about the revenue right???

A year to release an RFP that spends some grant money? Granted, the individual in the story that was quoted had a background of a bar tender but having a COMMITTEE to run an Ocean City department isn't going to make anything better. For crying out loud, most of the Council come from a background of selling real estate (include the Mayor). The Government there spends thousands of dollars to seek qualified people then hires a relative and creates a new committee to manage something.

Trust me. A lot of these unruly bus passengers may be better qualified to manage the town than the elected officials. In the end, it is the bus drivers themselves that make the Transportation Department work as well as it does.

If you have ever ridden an OC bus after 11:00 you would know cameras are a nessesity.
